Yes, but I get to live somewhere in London...

i wouldnt live in london if someone bought me a house there.

anyway, 37, mortgage as have just bought our 2nd house. 24 years left! <sigh> but i do own about 35% of the house

4 bedroom detached house in a village :) glad im out of Town now, was great when i was younger (got first mortgage at 24) but now i want some peace and quiet! :)

27, Mortgage - co-ownership with a mate of mine (from this unfortunate thread! Didn't buy that place in the end). Going quite well, interest only fixed with a year left on it.

We could do with getting a cleaner though... ;)

Thanks for all the votes. Makes for quite interesting reading.

It seems that plenty of people have mortgages, including many younger folks which surprised me a little. And for those that rent, there seems to be quite a few that do it out of choice, although the majority would rather a mortgage, which is what I expected.

Now is this a fair representation of the general public? Or do you think the members of this place are generally higher earners or have nice parents that help them out?

I think a lot of people here are computing enthusiasts which isn't a particularly cheap hobby, so are probably doing ok for themselves which probably swings the votes slightly.

Would be interesting to see national statistics on this.

Mortgage which I have had for 5 years since I was 21.

Want to move but due to the house not making any money, need to save a deposit AGAIN :(

24 mortgage,

Never saw the point of renting, because for the xxx amount you pay on rent, you can get a mortgage, how many of you are paying less than £310 a month for a 3 bedroom place?

A guy I work with is paying £500 a month to rent a 1 bed flat! His mortgage advisor said he should look into buying a house, because for £500 a month he could get a decent sized place, even with a 2nd bedroom.

Only think is, the guy I work with is an idiot, he's not shopping around for a decent mortgage rate or anything, he's just sticking with his current bank. I pointed out to him that he could get a decent sized 2 bedroom house a lot cheaper than £500 a month and he looked at me as if I was talking a different language.

I tried and failed to explain that for £190 less than he's paying in rent I've got a 3 bedroom house, with a conservatory and a massive garden

23, living with parents while saving every penny I possibly can to get a decent deposit.

Unfortunately I am unlike the spoon fed child above and like the majority of other young adults struggling to purchase their first house.
I don't mind living with my parents, as it allows me to save £500+ per month (equivalent of what renting would cost) and still have luxuries such as holidays, meals out etc...

I hope to move out by September 2013 when I should have eventually saved the required £12k deposit.

Are you calling me a spoon fed child?

Me and my wife saved for our deposit ourselves thank you very much.

I rent privately and I'm 25, I pay £425 for a 1 bedroom apartment in Wigan, It is very nice for Wigan standards but I would prefer a mortgage, I'm currently spending everything I earn on getting married but will probably start to save for a deposit on a house once that's over and done with

ouch. i pay only £30/mth more for a 4 bed detached house in a village. plus i get to own it in a few years :)

Wow Ahleckz, how did you manage to own outright at 23?

I'm 33 and I'm 5½ years into a 25-year mortgage. £15k deposit on £70k property, £55k mortgage, renewed every 2 years. Stafford.

I'm 36. Have £35k mortgage with 13 years left to run.

Due to recently splitting up, I also rent a 2 bed flat whilst she's living in the house.
