I would rather the state education was good enough that private education held no advantages.

As a transition to this point, I would like to see more interaction between the state and private education sectors.
Do you know what, there's not much I'd agree with you on but that is absolutely spot on! Let's stop trying to drag everyone down to be equally "ok" rather lets find was to sustainably invest to bring everyone up to the same opportunities and start in life.

At the end of the day being an MP is a job, why are people surprised that most of them are "in it for themselves". Are you also surprised that most footballers will go to the club that offers the highest wage? And that if someone offered to double most of our salarys we'd hand in our notice tomorrow? If you're unhappy with the current MPs you are more than welcome to put yourself up at the next general election, we live in an open democracy

and there in lies the problem. It isn't just a job, it is a position of service, it's something that should be entered into with the thoughts of what can be done for the good of the people and the country. If they go in thinking how they are going to rinse the system then we might as well just be in another banana republic. I also note that you haven't bothered commenting on the fact that the whole campaign has basically been sound bites, so I'll assume you think that's acceptable for politicians to push out sales pitches without any substance.

The campaigns are sound bites because people have spent thousands of hours analysing what the best strategy is to get elected, it turns out that repeating things over and over in a short sound bite format works. It's basically supply and demand. And yes, being an MP is a job that commands a good salary and puts people in a reasonable position of power. How would you make sure that we only get people who want to only serve the people? Would they also perhaps be more inclined towards Socialist policies?

Can someone explain to me why we have like 10+ different taxes?

Why not just have a flat tax rate on income, remove VAT, remove everything really and to make up the shortfall, a much harsher tax on land/property (dont start, a great deal of economists feel its a good thing)?

Woo Betfair odds for no overall majority has moved out from 6 to 7.6! Doesn't look like they are expecting a hung parliament.

Hmmm.. As much as i've said I'll vote conservative and i don't think now is the moment for JCs socialism, with brexit now is certainly not the moment to spook businesses who are actively being woo'd by France and Germany I do think alim Tory majority would be a good result allowing us to get things done but putting a very firm shot across their bow.

They've managed to disenchant a lot of centre right voters with this campaign who if given a New Labour option this time would have voted that way. Unfortunately for me JC and the current manifesto leaves me completely unable to even consider Labour this time, Lib Dems are all over the place and no one else is credible so it'll be Tory with a "if you screw this up you're getting voted out next time for 10 years".

Shame we have such an adversarial system, if someone had the charisma and ego to allow them to combine the best policies from all parties we'd have a great result.

As it is if one side has a policy which is a vote winner the other side has to object on the grounds of "we're not allowed to agree"

Because we live in a country of total ******* simpletons that would see an increase in income tax and assume they'd be worse off?

And because, with no consumption taxes, there would be considerable incentive to earn your money outside the UK, while living here.

Oh, and we'd need to come up with new ways to shape people's behaviour. Taxes are (supposedly) currently used to try and encourage people toward more positive behaviours. Drinking/smoking less. Walking, cycling, or using public transport, instead of driving, etc.

A country needs to balance both human elements and numbers to work. Any kind of indiscriminate property/land tax is going to do more bad than good to society as an overall thing.

The betting sites are very fishy.. all are for cons to win but all you get is free bets?? My Facebook is littered with them ads and I've never did any betting in my life.

They're promo sign-up offers. For example, 20/1 on the Tories to win a majority, maximum £1 stake. The winnings are paid as free bets because a lot of people will lose on the subsequent bet, reducing the cost of the promotion to the bookie. Pretty standard really.

There's a matched betting thread on these forums if you fancy turning that 20/1 into ~£15 guaranteed.

you're better off just taking the free bets... less hassle and better returns :)

that wasn't mentioned in your post either:

nope I don't see everybody else except for people on 20k or less... you just stated 'everybody else'

it is factually incorrect, you're wrong no matter how you try to change the argument or post a link that doesn't even support your assertion

Well good to see from your links that in the last four years the effective net amount left per household after tax has risen from 70% to 75% which is the highest it's been for over 40 years.

So I still stick with my claim the top 5% can handle a extra 5% tax and they won't be any worse off than they were a few years ago.

Yeah right. It's almost impossible to get elected unless you belong to one of a few parties and in order to get put forward as their candidate you need to toady up to them for years, doing your time. Plus you need a decent wad of money in order to give up work for months of campaigning.
