POLL: Will you be moving from Haswell to Skylake?

I'm still not sure if I want to go X99 or Z170. I was able to get a 5930K for a decent price through work, but it isn't that much of an upgrade the more I think about it compared to my 2600K.

Two more cores and at most a 10% IPC improvement in some programs at the cost of more power consumption and heat. While those extra cores would be nice on certain occasions I don't feel like I would use them enough to justify the $800 upgrade cost.

Skylake is looking like a decent update coming from Sandy Bridge but the one thing that makes me hesitate is the TIM. It seems very unlikely that Intel will go back to using indium solder and the current paste they use is not good and since I plan on keeping the setup for another 4-5 years like my 2600K, that concerns me(degredation, drying out, etc). I'm probably thinking too much

Still happy with my i7 2600k @ 4.8Ghz :)

Seems a few have mentioned that they are stocking with sandybridge. I have a 2500k i5 overclocked to 4.2ghz and was planning on upgrading to skylake.

Can someone please explain why its not worth the upgrade? Is it really not that much of an upgrade. I built my pc about 5 years ago and seriously getting an upgrade itch.

Would I be better off spending the money I would have on a new computer on a really good gpu and monitor? I'm still on an AMD 6950 (which has been suprisingly good for how old it is now) but is getting sluggish.

One of my reasons for an upgrade was the minimum requirements for the Oculis Rift consumer version. It was recommended to have a 4*** series i5 (Ivybridge is that?). I know its recommended so my 2500k would still work but do you think it would have that big of an impact sticking with this CPU.

Yeah I dont think its a major improvement over a 4770K but I just have a serious upgrade itch right now so it will be hard to resist. I just like the whole process of upgrading and building and having done both laptops in our house recently theres really only an upgrade to the desktop left to go!

4.7 on a 4770K is amazing. I can't get mine anywhere so I am still on 3.9 as I couldn't get it stable at even a bit of an overclock at 4.2 thats with an H100i water loop as well. I am sure its just me as I am pretty inexperienced at overclocking CPU's.

I've got a 2600k and I've also got the upgrade itch but I don't feel like I NEED to upgrade. In fact I probably won't given DX12 is supposed to make such upgrades irrelevant for gaming.

i might as my sandy is getting bit old depends might wait for skylake refresh or might just go straight in

edit: also depends how it clocks and if its hot like others or not

Same, I keep putting off upgrading as the gains are so negligible.

At some point they will add up to enough that I may finally put my hand in my pocket..

really want to scratch my upgrade itch from the 2500k but i'll wait and see what the benches and overlcocks are like. Highly likely that I'll swap out tho.. Think the replacement board i have is hampering the crossfired 280x

Hmm this thread spurred me to have another go at overclocking my 4770K and this time after a bit more voltage tweaking I got a stable overclock at 4.2mhz. Even less reason to upgrade to a Skylake now but how am I gonna scratch that itch? I have upgraded pretty much everything worthwhile in the last 6 months so not much left to do. I was thinking about getting a 1TB SSD to put my Steam Library on but I am not convinced it would make much difference aside from having a few games boot up a little faster.

I'm going to give Skylake a miss I think. I've got the following CPUs:
Gaming Rig 1 - 4770k @ 4.4GHz
Gaming Rig 2 - 4770k @ 4.2 GHz
Media Server - 3770 @ stock
HTPC - Q9650 @ stock

Only one I am somewhat tempted to upgrade is the HTPC but to be honest I think the cost of upgrading everything is too high for the gains.

Anybody know what it will likely cost yet? I am estimating that a Skylake 6700K will be in the area of a 4790K so around £300 but it could be way more so that would be major factor as well. At this stage we don't know how much the various MOBO's are going to be either. On the plus side the cost of DDR4 seems to be coming down slowly, I've got a few on my Amazon wishlist and the prices have been downtrending for a while.

X99 if you need the cores for encoding, rendering or 4k gaming with 3-4 gpu's. Below that a 4799k will be grand. If on an older platform, go skylake. Enough for dual card sli/xfire if gaming only.
