Porsche 996 Turbo - Any buying tips and what do people know about these?

I sincerely doubt that a Porsche tyre is £250 a corner, you don't pay much more than this for a Bentley GT tyre and something tells me, they're bigger wheels....

Awesome cars although I would prefer to buy a 355 or noble instead :O

As you still live at home I'm gonna be boring and suggest that you buy a house. It's madness to own a flash car but not have your own property. Houses generally appreciate, cars almost always depreciate.

I would much prefer to own a modest house and a modest car over a flash car and live at home but that's just my opinion.

Maybe someone has the back issue but I'm sure autocar bought one from Germany (left hooker for price reasons) and they ran it for xxx months.

I think the basic comment was - its a supercar so if you can't afford to run a supercar don't bother as even minor things that can go wrong cost mucho cash.

At the end of the day even at £35-40k it was still an £80k+ car originally and will have the associated costs I would guess.

I have to agree with that. Also when the time comes to buy a house of your own are you going to be able to keep the porsche or will you have to downgrade? Something to think about.

Mum can wash his Porsche for him though ;)

Just because the wheel is bigger, doesnt mean the tyre is cheaper. Its to do with with Speed rating amongst other things.

Wheels on my Golf are 225/40/18 and I have Pilot Sport 2 ZR Rating - £170 per corner inc vat and valve fitted with laser track (I have just replaced the fronts at Micheldever Tyres which are the cheapest around the south).
Now I know that the older 993 Turbo had the same size as this.

Wheels on my "PROPER" Mini Cooper Sport are 175/50/13 are £90 a corner if you want Dunlop Sport or Yoko's.

The Bentley GT has a tyre size of 275/40/19 and the recommended tyre for this car is the Pirelli P Zero Rosso which are about £190 per corner fitted.

Im pretty sure the rears of the turbo are 235 or 245/30/18....now the recommended for the turbo is the Yoko AVS Sport which are around £215 or the bridgestone N2 which are £235.00 per corner....

Buying a house is boring - I still live at home (although I am still 21) and pay £300 a month in board to my parents. I could easily rent a 3 bedroom house in Alsager for that, but I would have bills and other hassles to worry about then. I'd rather just cruise around in a decent car =]

Independence is far from boring, having your own home to do with as you want is an incredibly achievement and extremely fun, its also something to be very proud of, I know id be a bit embarrassed to take my mates or a GF home only to have my mum and dad there.

I couldn't agree more but this is not the place to discuss it. Gibbo has asked for advice on a car, not his personal living circumstances. I'm sure if he wanted to get a place of his own, he's big enough to decide that for himself.

I don't get the OcUK obsession with buying houses. Sure, eventually, its important, but if cars are your hobby why sacrifice it to buy something you don't currently want? Houses are, generally, dreary. Boring, dull, expensive to run. One day I am sure Gibbo will find someone he wants to spend the rest of his life with but until then I see no real reason why he can't enjoy his cars.

Ok, a house is an investment and a car isn't but looking at a spreadsheet showing assets isn't quite as exciting as pushing a 911 Turbo around Oulton Park, is it?

Once you take the plunge and get a house your days of ridiculous cars are over for the short term. Enjoy them whilst you can.

Some of you might be more than happy to spend most of your income paying bills and mortgage rates to live in a house all on your own. Others might not find that quite so exciting.

Plus there is always the girlfriends place to go back to ;)

Well said fox

As I always say to the gf - "If I walk into a porsche dealership with you, they arent going to give me a new porsche are they? . . . . . .

. . . . . . but if I drive up to a club in a porsche, I can easily get myself a new girlfriend"

:D

Its quiet simple really.

Cars will loose you money
House 99% of the time will not.

You can have a girl over to stay in your house
You cant have a girl over to stay in your car

But this is WAAAAY off topic, Im pretty sure gibbo was asking about 911's, not about the pro's and cons of owning your own house!!

To be fair, the people saying that buying houses is boring are people who live in dodgy area's. Not suprised, i wouldnt want a house in stoke either ;)

On topic, the 996 is a gorgeous car. And as much as i like american muscle, i would take the porsche every time. A Porsche 996 Turbo X50 or not is something a lot of people go their entire lives wanting, you'd be mad not go for that if you are in the position to afford to buy and maintain one.

Not much to say apart from buy a 996 Turbo over every other option you have considered. They are leaps and bounds ahead, and massively tuneable if thats what you like.
