Porsche Owners Thread - If you own one or just like or hate them! :)

Cheers for the heads up - interesting it's the 3.4 that's got a tougher seal than the 3.6. Does the 3.6 997 have the problem still and the 3.8S version is ok?

What's considered a mk1?

IMS failure on 2006 model and newer 997's is very rare as Porsche updated the IMS.

Bore scoring was an issue on all engines until gen2 997's.

The mk1 996 runs from 1997 to 2001, you will see that there are two different type of headlights on the 996, ones that look like the ones on my car which is a mk1 and the ones on the mk2 are a different shape. There were two variants of mk1 996 one with 296bhp (1997 to 1999) and from 2000 to 2001 they got a slight update to produce 300bhp. The 3.6 in the mk2 brings an extra 20 bhp to the mix.

Data collected so far for 77 cars (25th June 2015).

Here's a couple of bar charts showing which engines and models have sustained a failure:

Total number of failures - 7.8% (Not including the LN as a original failure)
of which 3.4 - 0% and 3.6 - 10.9%
of which all X51 - 0%, C2 - 10.5% and C4S - 12.9%

IMO the weakest point on the mk1 are the heads and cooling system people neglect the cooling systems and the engines run hot. There were also casting issues on the heads which causes the left hand head to crack at the mounting point for the hydraulic tapets across core plugs. Funny thing is even though the castings are the same both sides the problem only ever happens on the left. I would hazard a guess that the figures for the head problems are somewhere in the region of ims failures.

Thanks for that - very interesting to know. :)

What are they like for speed humps? Not the little ones but the ones that are a high as a kerb?

My focus gets over them no problem but guessing a Porsche is a no-no. Do they do sump guards or sill/bumper protectors at all? Otherwise you're touching them up all the time just to leave your house!

Never had a problem with them, they can also mount kerbs fairly easily both front and back. They really aren't massively low, in fact back in the day I had a mk5/6 escort that was far lower.

I drive past BMW UK HQ every morning to work. At the front of the building is obviously senior management/director parking because it's all i8's, 6/7 Series and M cars; but since Monday there's been a white Cayman GT4 parked there too. It must be a good car and it sticks out like a sore thumb in between all the BMW's. Looks bloody amazing tbh!

Have been told my neighbour is getting a new Mustang GT. Seems to think it will be one of the first RHD cars to be shipped over. I guess just wait and see. Anyone know when they actually arrive at UK dealers?
