Porsche Owners Thread - If you own one or just like or hate them! :)

200,000 mile Porsches Carrera 996/997 - what to look for?

Lost count how many times you have posted about X/Y/Z car asking for information and giving the impression you are going to be buying one.

IMHO I think the time has come for you to actually buy something rather than wasting helpful peoples time.

996 and 997.1 have too many little things going wrong with it so if you can only afford a 200k mile example of a 10 + year old car its going to be painful to keep it on the road.

I would feel more comfortable in a 997.2 with 200k miles

Sorry for wasting your time. I have the money for any of them now but the potential for more hopefully. I could get a Porsche now for £15kish but had my eyes opened to this and I've kinda thought stuff it. You only live once. I've looked into others and I can't do that. I'd like a BMW but I just can't bring myself to own a BMW - I'd be guilty by association. The thought of owning a Porsche is just 'more' than owning a Honda, BMW or Audi (unless R8!)

Thanks. The ones I've seen all say they have had new engines/IMS/discs&pads etc but just wondering if there is anything else to look for?

Obviously I'd be looking at suspension but are there certain bushes to look for that would be troublesome?
Anything I went for I'd be getting a Porsche Pre-Purchase-Inspection as they are about £400 but the money it would save me in the long run would be invaluable however I can't afford to look at 10 cars and do 10 PPPI's.

You should see his job threads in GD - in the last year or so we've had everything from being an airline pilot to a phsyio to a lorry driver to a driving instructor to a student in Australia. Lots of helpful advice given each time, much like the car thing :D

Back on topic though a Porsche inspection on a 200k 996 seems pointless, surely it will come back with a massive list of stuff every time? These do not appear to be cars best purchased at 200,00 miles - if thats all thats in budget look elsewhere.

I could have been a pilot! I just never passed the interviews! Everybody elses loss.... :p

Studying to be a physio now!

Sent off license to become HGV driver (Sent to DVLA in August and still waiting.... even rang up!). Will take test when I get it back.

The driving instructor stuff I have on the arm of my chair. Doing nothing so fair call on that.... :p

Student thing in Australia - still looking into although the $140,000 cost limits it a bit.. lol

So :p lol

I ask because of this sot of thing:-
"in 2009 the car had a huge amount of work to get the mechanicals underneath correct - I have receipts from Porsche for over 10k at this point - suspension and brakes etc were all sorted at this point .
In Feb of this year a New Engine was fitted at a cost of £6000 and the car has done under 4000 miles since .The new engine had all the upgrades to liners and IMS etc as you would expect from a new engine . It runs and drives perfectly and everything works as it should . "

Exactly - tells a story, right? In the last 6 years he's spent at least £16,000 keep it on the road excluding tyres etc!

I'm probably not that far away from that figure in 4 years of ownership and mines only on 78k now, I bought it on about 65k. It's no secret that these things can throw expensive bills and even the mk2's are getting on now.

As fox said, its cost the owner a fortune to keep it running and a new engine is not £6k so its probably had is fix or something.

I had a Gen 1 997 in the now year I owned the car it had no end of little things go wrong, finally it needed a new engine at the cost of £17k. Lucky I had a warranty.

If you have a £15 to £20k budget and you really want to be in a Porsche a high milage Gen 2 Cayman is the way to go, rock solid engine and greenly more reliable. You may even find one with a warranty.

To be honest, now I know what to look for on a gen1 911 / Cayman / Boxster I would not be worried about buying one. :)

Apart from the regular stuff you should check/listen for on any car with a gen 1 997/987 most important stuff is to make sure it is ideally a 2006 built model (upgraded IMS), check the engine for scoring and ideally make sure its being a daily driven car. These cars want to be used, not a garage queen or stuck in traffic never exceeding 30mph.

Yes a gen2 has the more reliable engine, no IMS issues or scoring issues, but IMS is very rare and though scoring can and will effect all cars it can certainly be limited and nearly prevented with improved cooling and good maintenance.

My Thoughts:

First off I hated the steering as too me it felt "too floaty" and it didn’t feel as weighty as my Cayman. However, once I got back to the dealers and review the spec of the car it had the "Power Steering Plus" option, it’s vile! Do not ever choose this option. So from that aspect that ruined my thoughts on the steering feel. When I took the Turbo S out the steering felt much more weighted and much more communicative.

The engine, it’s a peach! The engine torque was also very noticeable and then from 4000 RPM, it sings and it reminds me in many way of my old Honda which I used to drive. As mine seems to feel flat from 1000 to 4000 RPM in comparaison. I also didn’t seem as noisy as mine but I guess this is because of the engine is further back but it did feel a little boomy in places but I don’t know if that was due to the extra space in the rear.

PDCC was very noticeable when it was on and off. However, it don’t know if these was a feature of the PASM but it doesn't but it felt a lot more crashy than the X73 (Sports Chassis) on mine and it felt like there was much more movement in the car but again I don’t know if this was down to options on the car etc... The odd thing is the Turbo S didn't feel like this at all, so I don't know if thats down the the AWD or the options on that car.

The brakes where ok but it took some time to adjust to the steels as they don’t have the bite or the feel of the PCCBs like mine.

Also I was pleased to note, that I was offered a very good price for mine for trade in against the car. As I thought the car would have lost a lot due to normal depreciation in the first year.

So I returned the car to the dealer and felt a little bit dispointed, so discussing my feeling with the car I was then offered a Turbo S to test drive and WOW this car is quick! This may sound werid but its too quick for me, as you only have to brush the peddle and your in licence losing speed. However, the steering feel was miles better, it had a nice weight feel and felt like it was more communicative. I just can't get over how quick the car was though its just nuts! That was a 2014 car which had done 5000 miles and was up for 119K.

Overall, I really enjoyed the car especially the engine it’s a right hunny! However, I felt that it wasn't that much of a upgrade from mine in terms of performance and smile factor to justify a upgrade. So I'm going to look again when they get their new demo cars in to see how they perform. A 911 will be a upgrade at some point but at the moment my Cayman GTS is just right for me at the moment.

If anything it make me appreached how good my little car is, as down the country lanes I know my GTS would be quicker than a 911 GTS.

HI Andy

Looks a lovely car, with some great options but also some not so great.

Really was not a drivers spec car that, as per your comment the Power Steering Plus is woeful, it is like the city button found in Fiats, with the exception you cannot turn it off, so it reduces feel and makes steering to light, vastly reducing confidence in the car. Terrible option!

PDCC also tends to reduce feel and feedback from the car, but does improve ability and quicker laptimes, but for a road car probably best not to have it to make the drive more fun.

Drive the 4WD GTS, without the PS Plus and without PDCC if possible (might be default on GTS) or just find a regular 991 C4S without those options and with ceramics, PSE, PDK Plus and I think you will find its a totally different and much better car to drive.

Also a wild card, drive a 997.2 RWD GTS, those were proper drivers cars and a true alternative to a GT3. :)

This is the conclusion I arrived at. However, to get that options I want and yes I am a bit fussy its going to mean its a new car or ill have to be lucky with a second hand one. Ironically, I really liked the huge sunroof, it made the car feel a lot more roomy.

However, for the moment I am going to enjoy mine as its great drivers car and maybe a few years trade up unless I get ichy feet or a great offer turns up.

Your can't switch off PDCC, the button just puts the PASM into sport mode but the PDCC is on all the time.

My new 911 has PS Plus and the old one does not. Its awful so I plan to have it removed by the dealer soon.

You should try a 991 GTS4, I had one and loved it. I think if you start looking around £95k should find you a good one over the winter.

That one was listed at £105K.

I did wonder, as it felt the same as PASM on the Cayman as thats the reason I went with the Sport Chassis on mine as its was a much better ride IMO.

I will keep a eye out to be fair and the dealer is looking for me but my two main things other than the colour are PCCB and ACC as I couldn't live without them now oh and the LED interor package as a guity pleasure.

I like the LED interior lighting pack, I put it on my Cayman and my 911 has it also. Its quit easy to retrofit I think if you don't have it on yours (well it is on the Panamera and Cayenne).

105k sounds like a lot there are quite a few low milage high spec cars in the £90's which are not selling.
