Really don't know which one I'd want.....



Though GT2 RS is so special, near GT3 precise handling and then turbo rush that is truly insane and will churn your stomach something crazy. :D
 
Finally got mine back today, for those wondering it is possible to change a 911 clutch without a ramp, though the guy doing it did not enjoy the slave cylinder that was hard work.

So it's had everything changed whilst box off:-
Clutch, pressure plate and bearing.
Flywheel was ok and within Porsche tolerance with no major hot spots so kept it.
RMS seal
IMS seal kit
Clutch fork release spring
Clutch guide sleeve
Clutch slave cylinder
Spark plugs changed
Fresh gearbox oil
Fresh bolts for clutch and flywheel

Pretty much everything replaced that could be, hopefully now all will be well for sometime. :)
 
Dare I ask how much all of that cost?!

I get my parts heavily discounted. Clutch kit was £320, plugs and other clutch parts, IMS seal, plugs etc came to approx £200 also. I also purchased new ceramic pads all round (£450) and refitted the ceramic disc. Labour, well mates rates so far less then it should have being but still quite a lot. But whilst the box was off it made sense to change everything and not cut any corners. would have being over £3000 at Porsche, managed it all at sub £1500. :)

Needless to say the clutch and gear change feel the best they have being and nice to be back on ceramics. :)

Get the impression you didnt like the steel brakes in comparison gibbo?

Are they noticeably worse in terms of stopping performance or just the extra weight not doing much for handling?

Steels give a marginally better pedal feel, but only marginal, but Porsche brakes are like Porsche steering, other cars I've driven simply don't compare.

What the ceramics do though is how smooth and silent they are, then add in the stopping power and it's just like voodoo magic. They improve ride quality and improve acceleration.

Then factor a set of disc on a road only car are capable of 200,000 miles per set and pads do around 50,000 pet set and well no dust is a nice feature.

The downsides are only cost and heat delaminates them so a lot of track abuse results on only marginal better life than steel equivalents. Though the latest 380mm ceramics seemed to have cured the track life issues.

In short ceramics are quieter, smoother, last life of the car, emit zero dust, reduce unsprung weight and have incredible stopping power.

Downsides are cost, don't have quite same pedal feel and can suffer from heat.

Re-fitted the r-compounds to mine yesterday now its warmer, had a good drive out, wow, such a drivers car its untrue. But car developed an awful clunk/rattle in corners and bumps. Pushing on sunroof fixed it or opening sun roof.

So a few well placed pieces of sticky foam between sunroof and trim have being placed. Of course I had to test this, lovely 19c here today and another stunning drive completely rattle free. :)
 
Is this replacing the Ferrari or is this the new daily?

Get used to it as be good to hear how you feel it compares to the 997 you had a few years back if you can remember. I am finding the new Porsches though technically amazing are loosing some of their character by just making going fast seem less challenging and well to easy. Maybe a sign of the times ahead, be good to hear what you think Dave. :)

I like it, looks great but when you say so much more refined, is the issue for me, the 911 has being a true sports car, but now seems more grand tourer feel wise but faster than ever and it's easy to access it.

My honest opinion, I think Porsche chased Nissan and lap times too much, yes they are faster than ever, but if someone said to me you can have any a porsche you want I'd choose a 997.2 GTR 4.0 RS and if that was not possible then a 997.2 GT3 and RS if available. The 997's felt alive and it seems the only cars that do that in the new lineup is the Cayman.

Of course this opinion is based from my armchair and being a passenger in a 991. Being a passenger in many a 996 and 997 you can feel it moving around so much and you know it's rear engined. The 991 I passengered in did not have such sensations, it just felt very rapid, but in it's favour it did seem to like a dab of opposite lock, but as a passenger it felt not as communitive. The steering on the new models definetely is not that of the 997, it's good but it's definetely lacking.
 
very nice, my 997.2 is going to be picked up tomorrow by the new owner so I am on the lookout for a 991. I may jump into a R8 V10 or a RS TT with a few mods first if I find a good one.

My budget is a little limited and I am struggling to find a good 991 at the moment.

RS TT? Seems like a downgrade, if you want straight line speed buy a GTR.
 
One of my neighbours has just traded his C63 in for a TT RS. Looks nice even with the horrific orange colour it comes in. Not my cuppa at all.

I've driven them and serious gave one some thought as they can be tuned to around 420BHP for relatively little money and are pretty low in weight so are pretty damn rapid, would hand my C2S it's ass let's say that. But to drive I could not believe how freakin dull the thing was, just lifeless and understeer like you could not imagine. Looks ok, great interior, very quick and a nice noise, but excitement and handling are very lacking.

If I ever decide I want all out performance I will buy a 911 Turbo or a GTR, they are faster than a tuned TT RS and have far superior handling and now GTR's you can get a nice UK car for 35k. The TT RS big advantage is far lower running cost, so for the performance on offer it's probably one of the cheapest silly fast cara you can own for the money that looks cool and has a superb interior.
 
Dave that looks awesome mate, one of best 991's I've seen bar GT3's. :)

One thing, give it some wheel spacers as the wheels don't look flush with body.
 
At least Porsche have got the new Cayman so sorted.



Can't think of car that is better which is so at home both track and road which feels so good to drive.

*how much do these usually go for (talking three or more years old)?
*what are they like to live with?
*running costs
*what are they like to drive?

I currently own an m135i. I've only had it for a about a month now. And although I absolutely love driving it. I can't help but feel as though something is missing from the overall experience. I can't put my finger on it just yet.

Probably the best drivers car under 100k that works superbly well on both track and road, not one or the other.

Depends what you want, what is it you feel your missing in the BMW, driving feel, excitement, challenging? Or something else?

If you want a true drivers 911 a lot recommend a basic 997.2 C2 with 18" wheels, no PASM, essentially base spec, comfy and great fun.

I prefer the S versions, 3.8l has superb torque and power, 0-100mph in around 9s, PASM so soft on road which works well and firm on track.

If you want a true drivers car with unbeatable steering, communication and feedback with incredible ability when your brave enough to push it then Porsche is one of the best options and I love the challenge of the 911, nearly four years later I love the drive. I've never kept any car this long, I say I am gonna sell it then I drive it and simply can't. :)
 
I think a manufacturer from Norfolk may have something to say about that.

On the road? I'd disagree, if your talking Lotus I've checked the new Exige out and Evora. Beautiful to look at but both were disappointing inside and on track even in just a cooking Carrera I never had any issues passing Exiges including the new model. Ring laptimes also seem to confirm that the 911 is faster, 7:50 vs over 8 minutes for the latest Exige and on the road the Exige is vastly worse than the 911, the Evora is nearly as good on the road but looses some on track again. The 911 really is the complete package and is why they have sold in millions and are one of the most profitable companies. They make cars which drive on track like focused track cars but are great and comfortable places to be on the road.

In defence the Exige on track would be more thrilling and challenging for sure, afterall its got no carpets, but the 911 is not exactly boring and on the road the 911 is the most fun road car I have ever driven by quite some distance, they literally truly do excel and you can use the power all year round. :)

I can't put my finger on it. Perhaps it has something to do with it being an auto. However, I feel as though I'd feel no different if it were a manual.

Will see how I get on but I can see myself taking either a 911 or Cayman out for a test in a few months time.

Still not told us what you think it is missing? if it is driver involvement then auto/manual makes a big difference. BMW's are now using auto's which are absolutely superb as an auto but they have lost the hardcore side that came with SMG. Porsche with their very latest PDK+ is superb, but on the age of Porsche you'd be buying I'd say keep away from PDK, it like the BMW is boring.

Manual all the way on any 997/987 car, it was only the 981/991 era where PDK Sports Plus really is great as a drivers car. :)
 
I've not driven many Porsches. The only time I've ever felt my life was genuinely in danger when driving a car was in a 993 Carerra. It was awesome.

Why I love mine, because at times even in a 997 it gives me that feeling if I am a bit of a twit in it. :)
Now the weather is warm I can't wait for the drive home, as my 911 is running on Corsa's at the moment, in hot dry weather they are bloody amazing, I rate them even over the cups. But in the wet the car feels dangerous when it lets go were talking BIG SLIDES even with the TC on, though my car defaults to Sport mode everytime hence the slip angles. I've never driven it in none sport mode, no need!

But the Supersports are without doubt best all round tyre, on those I have huge confidence in the wet as well, the Corsa's in the wet just don't grip at all, so fun for sliding around at low speeds but at higher speeds it is very scary and twitchy, amazing difference a tyre makes, especially in the wet. I actually found the cups with their less tread depth better in the wet than the Corsa's.

I've not told you because I don't know what missing lol. It's just a feeling I have at the moment. Perhaps the car doesn't feel special enough... Perhaps it's down to it being an auto.

I once thought that a fast car would do it for me lol. Now I'm not so sure.

AUTO / PDK always feel great on test drives, as you just love the ability to nail them off the line perfect each time without shocking the transmission. But after a week its boring, too easy and then when you do go for a drive down your favourite b-roads the auto just dulls the entire experience.

I'd only take PDK Sports plus found in the 991/981 over a manual now or the old school SMG-2 found in the E46 M3's, otherwise a manual every time for a car which is also a fun/weekend car.

AUTO's have their place, motorways and daily commuters.

Power is not everything, considering that's a real entry level spec Cayman from Porsche, no ceramics, no diff, heavier/bigger wheels, no vector control and no buckets.

Latest Cayman from Porsche gotta be one of their best cars for a long time! With rumours of a GT4 Cayman coming as well.

In fairness the BMW is great too, but the Cayman is in a different league when it comes to driving pleasure and handling ability. :)
