Porsche Owners Thread - If you own one or just like or hate them! :)

I thought id write a little summary after one year of ownership, I honestly don't know where the time has gone.

My Thoughts:

First thing, am I happy with the car, a whole hearty, Yes! I've wanted a Porsche for such a long time now and lucky my circumstances have changed for the better over the last few years. Ironically it wasn't a 911 I was interest in as I have always had a soft spot for the Cayman. As for me Porsche have really nailed it with the 981 design, which I believe is on of the most eye catching cars on the road at the moment bar any of the Super Car toys!

To me the best thing about the car is the noise, its simply like being back at Le Mans with the cars accelerating down the Mulsanne straight. As to me it really does sound like a mini race car, even though I know its not a GT car. Using the PSE is also very loud, we have currently measured it at over 109dB with the exhaust on. Its also the enjoyment about driving the car, as it simply handles like a dream and you do get real feedback through the steering wheel in part that's down the X73 (Sport Chassis Setup) and the PCCBs.

I'd guess if I had the option to order the car again, the only things id change is possably changing the colour to a PTS colour (Voodoo, Riviera or Mexicio Blue) and id add the Home link and Speed Display (I had this on my original build but I must have forgot to add it back on) Options back in. Other than that the car is pretty much perfect. I can only thank the Porsche Experience Center at Silverstone for allowing me to test soo many options back to back to give me the 100% confirmation this is what I want.

I'm also going to keep the it a long term car, until I can trade up to a GT3. As I thought about moving to the GTS and to me and the chap where I bought my car from (OPC Bournemouth) agreed with me its not enough of a upgrade. Maybe if I was running a standard Cayman but not with the spec of my car. So this is why I ended up chatting and about the GT3's and being offered one at a bit less than market rate at the moment. However, thinking long and hard about it I'm going to wait as really, Ive not really pushed my car all yet to what its capable of. So i'm booking a few track days and driver training days this year to not only improve my drive skill level to see what the car can do.

£230.00 ~ OPC Colchester charged for a oil change (I supplied the oil)

Do you mean you thought of moving up to the GT4? The latter shares a vast amount with a GT3 suspension-wise and is very customisable (in terms of roll bar settings etc). Its no GT3 though so I would have said the same as Bournemouth OPC. Stick with what you have and try to pick up a GT3 early. The market is slightly artificial at the moment and I hear people are able to push OPCs to surprising discounts on 991 GT3s. GT4 prices are so high anyway, you may as well try to find a GT3.

I personally find the GT3 ride completely unacceptable on UK roads (unless one lives on a track). Also, can't make the rear "seats" functional enough to make it worthwhile. Good for a blast though and if I could afford a GT3 RS, I would buy now and store it. Will continue to appreciate.

Hi Guys,

Not really into my Porsche cars too much so don't really know the must have items against the nice to have. What are your opinions of the following car?

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/porsche/911-carrera-997/2010-porsche-911-997-gen-ii-carrera-2s-stunning-guards-red-huge-spec-with-pse/5047126?v=b

Thanks,

Neil

Don't buy a car without the following

PSE
Sports Chrono (if you are going PDK)
Full leather (looks cheap without it)
PCM

Very nice to have
14 or 18 way sears.

I would go for a S over a non S, I would always go for a PDK its going to be hard to sell on a car without PDK.

The car you have linked looks expensive to me. I have not been following 997 prices but that is more than I sold my 2010 997 for 3 years ago and my car had a much better spec.

The spec on that one you have listed is ok but nothing special, as I said before try and find a PDK car unless you really want a manual.

I would find a extra £15k and buy a 991. or spend £10k less and find a 997.

I was looking to upgrade to the 991 GTS but it's not enough of upgrade to be honest, I think same can be said about the GT4. It's also partly due to the insane spec of mine. One thing I did enjoy about the 991 GTS was that flat 6 howl! That's truly an evocative sound! Where as the 981 platform has a very strong induction noise, equally as evocative but not quiet the same.

I've never driven a GT3 but I have been lat loose in a 991 GTS / Turbo S but you can't compare them to the GT3. I'm not too fused about the ride as for me its only a weekend / track day toy.

However, I won't be taking a GT3 over Screwfix like I did with my GTS and ended up with a broken Windscreen. :(

Ah I see. Yes the 991 GTS won't be a performance/dynamic upgrade for sure. You'll have more space but that doesn't seem to be relevant here. For me it would be as I spend lots of time with the kids at weekends so don't tend to go off on my own. So I would go for a GTS as a pre-GT3 car.

The other beautiful feature of the GTS is the manual gearbox. It was a sad day when GT3s turned PDK-only. The GTS and GT4 being essentially the last of the proper manuals are insta-classics in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, I love PDK gearboxes (and it works well on my panny turbo) but I am quite old-fashioned and don't mind losing 0.1-0.2s per gearshift if it means I feel more involved.

Just a quick question in case anyone has an opinion. I'm looking to buy a 2013/14 911 C4S (the 991 version). The new 991 Carrera version just came out and it has a twin turbo 3.0 Ltr engine. More efficient and lighter etc, but had a listen and it sounds pants compared to the 3.8 Ltr NA of the outgoing C4S.

Do you guys think the NA outgoing cars will take a hit in prices in the next few months. i.e. is it better to wait prior to getting into one? Some are saying that as the v1 991 versions were the last NA Carrera engines, they may actually hold well in value in the future.

I think a good spec 991 will hold value well at around the 65k mark. As you said it's the last of the NA cars but if you spend 100k on a 991 you are going to take a bath.

My view would be to wait 6 to 12 months and find a nice 991 GTS or GTS4 I think it will hold value very well if you manage to get one under 80k. My plan is to sell my 991 when I find the right GTS.

Thanks Dr House. Which 991 model do you have ?

2012 C2s PDK. It's got around 32 worth of options. I'd the 9 Porsches I have owned it's one of the best.

Didn't C2S manual cars recently go up in value because of the lack of GT3 manuals?

No. Quite the opsoit a manual is worth a few thousand less than a PDK and is very hard to sell on.

Very nice. Been toying with the idea of a 997 C4 GTS but they somehow look quite dated and the rear doesn't seem as spacious (for the odd occasion when the kids will be in it). The 991 C4 GTSs are near enough £100k still so I'm going to pick up a well optioned C4S I think for £70-75k (after negotiation) and wait it out similarly to you.

As an aside, was the powerkit an option on the non-GTS cars (which I presume had it as standard?). Never seen a non GTS with it.
