Porsche Owners Thread - If you own one or just like or hate them! :)

What about the McLaren makes them next level? Obviously a 997 C2S is struggle but considering the praise the 991 GT3 is getting, is there really that much of a gap? (diminishing returns factored in)

To be fair we are comparing a 2 seat with a 2+2 and that has always made the 911 special because owners can actually get some small kids behind the front seats, something you can't do in any McLaren. This really shouldn't be overlook as it's a big part of the 911's appeal to many owners, if not something I ever considered which is why mine only had 2 seats!

So to your point I think construction is a big part of it, being a fully carbon monocoque car it is both lighter (circa 80kgs) and stiffer, both of which are good things to be on a sports car. They also seem to have sorted out the steering and they have a feel to them a 911 used to have, but has much less of these days (I am told, I am still yet to drive the 570S due to time, but friends I know who have come from 911's tell me this). They are also quite a bit quicker on the road it would seem and as an experience they are a more exciting car to be in and to drive on track and road (again I need to see this for myself).

My comment is really based on others views it must be said, but having been in a few now they do have something about them. However I don't think they will match Porsche (or Audi's come to think of it) build quality, certainly nothing in the Porsche range matches the V10 but the other thing is you can actually buy one. You can't buy a GT3, GT3 RS, GT4 for anything sensible and this is what has put me off the brand a little and why no matter how good the GT3 is, you can't get one for less than 140K, RS for over 200K so it's got MASSIVE competition at that level.

Let me be clear, Porsche kills it across the entire range, they make superb cars, always have and probably always will. However they have dropped the ball, Cayman/Boxster 4 cylinders are a non event and the new turbos have lost a little something as has the steering, but Porsche really knows turbos so I am sure they will sort it. I just think McLaren is making cars you can buy, is ironing out their initial quality issues, putting on a sensible warranty and making cars that look good, good amazingly well and importantly, 12C aside, retain their value brilliantly.

Always loved the 911, shady business practices and pricing aside.... Unfortunately the car is a victim of its own success (rightfully so), and on any given day you can count multiples of the things without trying.

The 540C / 570S on the other hand looks like a superb drivers car, the reviews have been great, they look the part, plus you still get relative exclusivity, which when spending a wedge would be a nice thing to have.

McLaren really have pulled it out the bag i feel, which given how most car startups endup is impressive.

That one of the reasons i can still justify mine with 2 kids. Not the most practical but as supercars go, theres not many that have more than 2 seats.

Be interesting if McLaren ever bring out a Boxster alternative, and how their reliability holds up after 5 years.

Acid test really. All very well being fine after 5K miles and 2 years. We need to see cars with 30K on the clock and 3 owners to make a judgement.

Well, the inspection results are in... regrettably I'm going to have to buy the car! Clean bores, a few minor issues (solenoid cover oil leak and sump leaking from the seal) which the dealer is happy to sort out and I can collect on the 28th of Jan!

I can't actually believe I'm about to own a 911!

Yep! 997.1 C2S convertible in midnight blue. Can't wait!

Your gonna enjoy that! Remember to keep the oil changes regular (use Porsche approved oil) to help prevent future bore scoring, it will happen but you can lessen it with more frequent oil changes. Thats if you intend on keeping it several years anyway. :)

How does an i8 compare to a 911 (and which one did you have)?

sorry for the slow response.

I have had a few of each 997.1, 997.2, 991.1. Cayman GT4

How does it compare:

Technology
well its a typical BMW so way ahead of a the Porsche. I love the HUD. The nav is generally better.
The HK system is about as crap as the Bose on my 911 but the Burmester was miles and miles better on my last 991.

Steering feel on the i8 is very poor, its extremely light and does not give much if any feedback, the brakes are average at best.

However as a every day usable car its just so good, the power is instant and always there, is so quick around town and on B roads. Considering how narrow the tyres are it handles quite well.

The aerodynamics work really well at high speed, the car feels very well planted at 130 mph (on a German road).

It looks so cool and gets a lot of attention which could be a good or bad thing.

Overall I am still really happy with it, the 911 is still a better car but for me I wanted a change and this has hit the right spot for now.

37 MPG, no congestion charge, free parking and no road tax is nice also.

I see the new GTS has been announced so maybe the 991.1 GTS prices will come down if so I will jump into that in around a year. The dealer has promised me the next 911 GT car that comes out (assuming its a GT3 as I doubt he will give me a GT2)

Hi all,

Any thoughts on this?

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifi...7-3-8-c2s-pdk-coupe--1-year-guarantee/6641581

Seems to have a lot of the options, but what is missing (other than active exhaust)

No idea, seems really nice car to me mate, PSE exhaust is nice, but if you want more noise you can buy far nicer anyway. Other than that seems a really nice car, the real must is gen2 and PDK which that is. :)

One thing to check is does the PDK have the sports plus mode, it makes quite a difference if you like driving sporty, regular sport mode on PDK I did find a bit annoying, Sports Plus essentials locks it into full manual mode, a bit like SMG 2 in manual, just a lot smoother though.
