Porsche Owners Thread - If you own one or just like or hate them! :)

Found myself on the Porsche configuration the other night and spec’d a 992.2 carrera cabriolet reasonably similar to my 997.1 (colour, seats etc). £130,000 without breaking a sweat. If I had that much cash one could make a strong argument for keeping my current car and spending £90k on a good 991 GT3 in addition. Bonkers price and hard to see the value in a brand new one.

Having recently sold my Evo, I now have sufficient funds to move forward with the GT4 purchase.

I'm settled on only one colour, Arctic Grey. Requirements are Clubsport, PDK, PDLS+, Bose and interior stitching to match the caliper colour. I'm on the fence between yellow or red calipers. I like both but yellow will mean PCCBs which I'm more relaxed about as it seems you can either swap them out for steels or have them resurfaced for similar.

Frustratingly I missed out on the perfect spec at Porsche Leeds by mere days. There's a similar example with black calipers so I called the non OPC dealer to discuss the car. They later emailed me to say the car was sold subject to finance. I got the feeling finance was preferable.

There is an example with PCCBs and yellow stitching which I would make enquiries of but the non OPC dealer has it up for £10K over what the other dealers were selling their examples for.

If anything, buying through Porsche seems to be cheaper because the non-OPCs don't want your cash, they want the monthlies so their asking prices for the cars are much higher - like those old catalogue things you used to get where the purchase price was always RRP so looked horribly overpriced but everyone bought on tick.

It's something I've not experienced before when buying cars.

I'd say it's more likely non-OPC are on SoR so owners are reluctant to chase the market down, dealers will negotiate regardless not that many care about finance honestly it's just what they expect from 90% of custom. That's a fairly rare list of specs so to get them all in one car at the right price/time is gonna be an element of luck, you might just have to yolo it.

Is this a 981 or 718?

Did some bimbling around Anglesey trac mon last week. Weather wasn’t fantastic but enjoyable track for a noob. Car sounded great and is much more capable than its driver! Couldn’t get the hang of church if anyone has tips. Laps were 2m or just under I think most of the day.

Looks like you just need more experience and confidence to use all of the track, loads of room to spare. I think Church you wanna aim to apex either the last or second last pole/cone, try and turn the whole thing from Church entry all the way to the braking zone of rollercoaster (? dunno the real name, the uphill braking tight left!) into one massive corner.

Thanks! Yeah, i think its all about confidence and it was first time around there and weather was wet/dry all day, so driver excuses out the way lol... :D On church, i tried late in, or early but never really pushed until i was unwinding steering input really, and then as you approach the double right wasnt sure whether to keep out left and do one right up hill, or follow both apexes. Its possible given my overall speed it would make no difference tbh. I remember the whole brake uphill straight tuitition before dropping left. Its a small track but lots to learn, id go back for sure.

Its a good track, I've done it once for a sprint, like mentioned above it just looks like you lack confidence to lean on the cars traction and brakes, you're coasting a lot too, sounds great though  I think for church it's so wide you could take it a number of ways and not really stuff it up. I just keep it on a nice balanced throttle and lean on the tyres just keeping inputs smooth, not panic and then try and floor it as soon as possible on exit pinned all the way up the hill, no torque to fall back on in an MX5 :( I was in 1min 40s in the 5, would be a bit more interesting now I have another 100bhp.

Last time I competed there the Porsche club were there the quick Caymans were at least 6s up the road from me :( I'll get them next time :D.

I think on the straights and braking I could have given it another 10-15% tbh, as you say i was coasting etc; but im ok with that tbh. Its a road car and I had a 2 hour drive back that evening etc; the bit id like to 'feel' is the breakaway point, on the front end and the limits of rear end traction coming out of corners, i think this would make me much faster tbh. Could do with doing somewhere with loads of run off as it would be a very expensive day out lol.

Bose and PDLS are a must. PDK will be easier to find.

GT Silver is a highly underrated colour. Steel brakes are amazing, but if you’re tracking the car, PCCBs are going to help.

The price is similar enough on 981 and 718 that I absolutely wouldn’t consider a 981 with the older interior tech.

Have you considered an Emira as well?

I would definitely get out and drive a GT4 and GTS back to back as well.

Very much not a 911 question, but does anyone know if later Macan's offer Android Auto?
From what I can read online, they do not, but also Porsche website states they all offer from 2022 onwards...
Thanks

I was under the impression later versions of PCM support Android auto. I think it’s the introduction of the wide screen system which supports it, and isn’t unique to a single car.

Best off testing at an OPC :)

It's something I've not experienced before when buying cars.

I have a 718 GT4 and a few tips:

Be careful with PDLS+ as some cars made after 2020 onwards had xenon instead of LED due to component shortages. They are still listed as PDLS+ on the spec sheet, however. It's not a criticism of xenon; just something to be aware of. That said, PDLS+ is just the ****. It's hands down the best light system I've had on any car.

The Bose audio is highly overrated (I have it on mine). The audio generally doesn't sound very good, especially when you take into consideration the lack of sound deadening and insulation. I would recommend that a buyer should lean towards a GTS or some aftermarket audio equipment to enhance your audiophile experience over seeking the Bose audio option specifically.

If you do any work on the car yourself (I do and have Clubsport), the cage makes getting into the engine compartment an exercise in itself rather than a small part of the job. Second to that: removing the air filters is an absolute faff, especially with the Clubsport trims around the suspension top mounts and engine/boot trim.

Android Auto can be activated using MIB and an SD card if you're not an iPhone user.

Try Ashgood near London. I told them in advance what I was looking for, and they had a car coming up for sale in a few days that fitted my requirements exactly. The rest is history and it's been in my garage since. The car developed a handbrake fault (only on hills - I live on a hill) after a week or so. Chris Denning diagnosed and fixed it and they paid for it without a fuss. I highly recommend them.

Very OT from the BMW thread... but do you know how this would affect warranty?

It would likely void the PCM warranty if they noticed. Typically they only look for hardware changes though.

I think the update is just unlocking the functionality rather than a modified software.

It would be a risk either way, but it wouldn’t deter me from getting one.

Interesting GT4 setup vid, done ay Anglesey you might enjoy with a tidy lap at the start with standard setup.

Thanks for this, interesting vid that. I’ve only had this car for 6 months so held off doing a geo on it as I wouldn’t know what to compare it to tbh. I’m fairly happy with the front end but do find the front get cooked within a few laps, but that could be how I’m driving also. I think illl have it done when it gets some new boots next year.

What tyres are you running? Cup 2s come with the GT4 from factory and they are a great tyre. Track driving does tend to wear front tyres more than rears, but it shouldn't be overly excessive.

Anglesey is an exceptionally tough track on tyres. I don't know what it is, the layout or the surface but I pretty much killed my fronts in one day there. I had maxed out camber without shims, so about -1.8 but really you need to be more like -3 with the GT4.
