Porsche Owners Thread - If you own one or just like or hate them! :)

I've been considering a 944 or 968 for some time as a Corrado replacement.

But I have recently noticed how "affordable" (at least to buy) the 996 is and have started looking at them. I feel they are unlikely to fall further in price and may be starting to turn. But my motivation for considering them is not to make a profit but to enjoy an occasional weekend car without depreciation.

I am not bothered about buying from a small dealer and in fact I see little benefit in using them so would prefer a private sale. I would be flexible on colour and although I prefer a manual would consider a tip. I am aware of the facelift and accept that my budget is likely to restrict me to an early car. I would prefer a 2wd rather than 4wd.

Condition and history are far more important to me than mileage and age. High mileage, if maintained correctly, is not an issue.

My budget would only be around £12k and although it is a small budget I appreciate they are not cheap to maintain and run. This wouldn't be too much of a problem as it's a self imposed purchase budget that I would allow myself to spend. I would not go up much from this.

Would I be mad to buy at this price? Or if I choose carefully then is it viable (running a 20 year old car already has taught me a lot about what to look for so I am no longer a novice with cars)? Would a targa be worth considering? Is a tip really worth avoiding?

Any thoughts appreciated. Thank you.

EDIT: One last thing: There is the possibility of my brother offering me an E46 M3 which I know is in superb condition (really one of the best). Thoughts on 996 vs E46 M3?

Thaks. Any particular reason?

Couple of things, first I just dont like the way they look, the interior in my view is just not a nice place to be and the risk of needing a new engine or getting the odd bill for a few K is enough to put me off at 10 to 15k car.

I know the M3 is not going to be cheap to run but its probably safer to than a 996 having said that I cant see them falling in price much more over the next few years.

I would have a E46 m3 over a 996 but thats just me.

Completely different cars though, depends what you want, if you can live with the practicality difference then I would have the Porsche. If you need an element of practicality then the Targa sort of works with the rear opening, but if you need to actually take a few suitcases then you'll need the E46.

This!

M3 engine, less than 2k. 996 engine around 6-8k if lucky but more like 10k+

911 is a great sure footed drivers car that like smoothness and precision driving, the M3 on the other hand is safer at the limits but an absolute hooligan.

I think that for a car that sees daily use, the M3 would be a much better prospect. However under any other circumstances I'd take the 911 providing it had either a full inspection done by a specialist including a boroscope on the cylinders, or if it had already had an engine rebuild by a reputable company.

I'd say the best way into a 996 is to get a turbo.

Could work out cheaper with in the long run with the more reliable engine.

If it did break though.....

Metzger engines do blow up as well, but less likely.

Problem with the Turbo is their age, I've known people with 996 Turbo get a 10k bill come service time due to requiring stuff like new actuators for turbo, new condensors and radiators, coil packs, service items and before you know it the bill is thousands.

A 996 Turbo or a 997 Turbo were 100k+ cars, just because they are now 20k area they still have 100k+ running cost.

In all fairness a 996 with a boroscope inspection and clean bill of health should prove reliable and running cost low, IMS failure is more likely on low mileage cars under 50,000, the chances of failure reduce greatly on higher mileage cars, something to do with how the bearing seal breaks down.

A 911 is a great car if used daily, they hate not to be used and its why I use mine at least once a week or as my daily, its proven very reliable for me, hopefully it stays that way fingers crossed. :)

Rumour has it that:

"The Cayman GT4 is now configurable on the Porsche site, by the dealers, all without pictures, only option lists and prices, all the different options are listed, but what was missing is the cars BASIC PRICE. At the moment the car is only available as a "Manual"/3.8 ltr and 380 PS, sports seats plus and 20 inch GT4 wheels, but no tyre sizes..."

Surely it has to have PDK as an option...

Also to add I've been reading it's ether going to be a 75k or 85k base.

Have to say 85k be nice, all these new crazy higher prices Porsche are doing are both good and bad. Good for me as my cars value is getting better, but bad for those who don't currently own a Porsche and looking to buy. :D

I know when it is due for official release. I know how many are due to arrive and I know the there are 4 letters of intent for every car due already within the OPC network. Now not all of those letters will be acted upon but I think the configurator will be pointless as they cars the are coming will be specced by people with LOI's.
