Porsche Owners Thread - If you own one or just like or hate them! :)

Yes, although I can't check the inside as easily due to the arches and width of the tyres. Seeing as the garage will be checking the brakes they can fully check the tyres at the same time.

What has arches got to do with it? Measure the tyres all the way across from below the arches, just get on your back and do it you lazy git. :p

Also do the 111 check whilst its still under-warranty, so they put most of the things they find right under the warranty and not out of your pocket. ;)

The garage is going to check the brakes so the car will be there, it'll take them 30 seconds and then the owner (family friend) can tell me the condition. He knows tyres better than me and I'd trust his judgement over mine. It's a moot point anyway as the tyres are getting checked. It's a non issue as long as someone checks them, which they will.

111 Point check will be done whilst the car is still under warranty, I'm wondering apart from tyres and brakes what could come up as being wrong on the car and not covered.

Any comment on the taking it to a specialist Gibbo, or about negotiating down with them?

Well 111 point check can throw up brakes, condensors, coil packs, tyres and other stuff which warranty does not cover, thats Porsches way of getting money out of you.

Secondly, they are cars that need to be pushed to get the most out of else they feel rather dull once the acceleration wears off. I got to take the Aston Martin out this weekend on an absolutely incredible 20 mile twisty road and it reminded me of why I own such a car, a feeling I lacked somewhat with the GT-R despite its epic performance and capabilities.

I told you so! ;)

The ability of the GTR and Turbo S is mind boggling, I'm am very lucky to have driven both quite a bit and spent plenty of time as a passenger.

I feel if I had a 997 Turbo or GTR it would just be a flirt, but within a matter of weeks/months I'd be bored.

It says something about the NA 911 and GT3's that owners tend to keep them for years and I generally bore quickly of cars, yet the 911 I've kept longer than any car and intend on keeping it until the end of the year, maybe longer which would be 3yrs.

Yes on a super-cold wet dry where my rather aggressive geo setup can actually hinder progress a little or means you have to put a lot of effort into warm the front tyres, but fact is on a dry day it is such an rewarding car to drive and still to this day I am finding better ways to pedal it along. Yes its cost me a small fortune to run, a lot my own fault as I love messing with cars, I just have to tweak things and maintain them to the highest standards, which with a 911 has cost me some serious money, but I enjoy every minute in that car more so than any other car I've own, though the Mustang will always have a special place in my heart. :)

Gibbo. Thanks for the contact I am going to order all the parts tomorrow.

One question, did you replace the front back box also?

Part number 6
Unknown-1_zps583fc284.jpeg

997.1 does not have this part, however I believe this is what most skip and put straight pipes there instead, gives a more 997.1 sound effect and nearly 10BHP too.

Check with FVD, Awe, Fabspeed etc. but its well worth putting the performance part in there and ask your OPC if they are OK with it, if not you need to check with Porsche if number 6 is the same with or without PSE, if its different then you need to buy it too.

The contact I gave you is a top bloke who will go out of his way to help you, so he will know or can find you the answer. :)

You also told me the new GT-R was light years better than the old one :p something having had both I simply didn't feel at all!

As soon as I open my garage door, the Aston already wins. They're so rare and so ludicrously overpriced here, they carry immense prestige. I get more attention in the AM than I do in the MP4.

That said, I can't imagine ever driving a better performing car for under $200k in the foreseeable future. My GT-Rs will always be something I remember but I can't say that I miss it, which is surprising.

I found the new one had noticably better dampening, or certainly noticable on the terrible roads I drove them on, power wise both similar, but as always with the GTR they all supposedly make different power.

It's great but by 2015 they are more than 10 years old so any help would be difficult.

Mine is a 2006 model car with M97 engine, so basic upgrades, but can still suffer IMS failure, scored bores or cracked casing, though scored bores can be kept in check with good care and some say frequent oil changes reduces risk of IMS.

Someone once said as humans we can catch cancer and many other diseases, do we worry about such things? No! As such drive and enjoy because the above happening to your car is slim.

I`m looking to replace the rear tyres at the moment. I know that super sports are the best tyre at the moment, but have they sorted out the `N` rating side of things yet? Would it be worth a quick call to the local OPC to see if they would void the warranty over that?

If not I guess it will be another pair of pilot sports. The fronts are okay at the moment so probably leave them as they are. Is there anywhere like centre gravity in the south east it would be worth taking to for suspension adjustment afterwards?

Thanks

No n rating, check if your OPC are ok with it.

I had coil packs paid for by a 3rd party warranty, considering how often they go it's bad that they aren't covered

Porsche will only cover if they have records of them changing them within 2yr I think.

Its like my AUX belt was squeaking and it was done a year ago, they had to change it and its not covered by warranty, but the OPC did it FOC as it was only changed a year previous.

Porsche service is generally excellent and discount is always available, you just have to ask!

Quick follow in question. Opc said no to super sports and warranty, so ps2's it is. The available tyres are N4, does that mean I also have to change my n3 fronts to comply with warranty rules?

Have to ask them, seems some are OK as long as its matching on just one axle, but some want all 4 matching.

Best to check.

Ah, that makes some sense

Due to warranty work, MOTs and servicing I've had for 2-3 days at a time a Cayman R, 987 Boxster 2.9, 981 Boxster S, Mercedes C220, BMW F10 520D, Scirroco 2.0TSI are the ones I can remember.

Makes it worthwhile as you get to borrow some nice machinery to test pilot. :D

Nightmare at my local OPC over the last 2 days, car went in for a service, 111 point check, brake fluid change and to have the warranty renewed.

Surprise surprise I was told I needed 4 new tyres (tread at 2mm and 3mm on all tyres), plus a load of other bits and pieces.

Arrived to pickup the car, got the Service Manager to put the car on the ramp and we went through and checked the car, nothing they had quoted for actually needed doing. We couldn't find anywhere lower than 4.5mm on the rear tyres (checking the three tread lines) and couldn't find anywhere lower than 5.5mm on the fronts.

The Service Manager did try to say they check the tread all the way up to the side wall and he could find the occasional place that was 3mm-3.5mm right near the sidewall but I was taking any of it.

The result was a warranted car and a substantial discount on the work I'd had done.

Car has its MOT booked for 2 weeks time, I can't wait for them to tell me I need 4 new tyres again :D

Thankfully that is the car sorted in terms of warranty and servicing for the next 2 years and I plan to move it on before then so I'll hopefully not have to visit the dealer again. Love the car and cannot fault it but the three times the car has been into my local OPC I've been told all 3 times I needed new tyres and all three times this has been proven to be a lie.

Sadly it does take some gloss off of the car when I have to get an independent garage to do a written tyre and brake report before the car goes into them because I suspect they'll try and take me for a ride.

Nightmare!
Had no issues regarding tyres, he'll I don't even run nspec tyres!

I shall not be re-newing warranty, I want a little more freedom with mods so contemplating Hartech or S&C service/warranty plan.
My OPC have being good but took it in for a squeak on cold startup which I diagnosed as idler pulley, told them don't change the belt as it's not that. Pick car up two days later and they say fixed, new belt but no charge and guaranteed it's ok. Few days later on cold start squeak back!

Gonna call them and say not happy about it and request they check the pulley as originally told otherwise at £90 for a new pulley I might as well by and fit myself as it's easy job. Just annoying when you tell them I know it's not the belt so don't bother changing it, yet they still bloody change that.

Still an excuse to request the new C4S rocket ship! :D

What was the thud at 6:10? Did he tag the wall?

Unsure, he's not said, if he did at such low speed suspect damage is minimal anyway. Shall be visiting him in a week or so, luckly it was a low speed corner, he was getting upto 155mph in parts, its at those speeds you don't want to be loosing it.

Thanks...

For a car they are doing up to sell they surely should have gone for that rather than reskimming the current ones.

£1k on lights seemed a bit crazy too

Yep that too me was a bad move by them. Yes they make the car look better and more desirable, but they could have left the lights and sold the car at £5995, end result would have been a further £500 profit.

Hi there

Swapped my gen2 GT3 25.5mm rear ARB for an Gen1 GT3 23.6mm rear ARB in my hunt to get the cars understeer/oversteer balance where I want it.

The gen2 bar on softest setting was a handful, oversteer even at turn-in, bear in mind a GT3 has more rear grip than my C2S due to it's diff and wider tyres.

I had tried a C4S 21.7mm bar, an improvement over the C2S 20mm bar but still more push than I'd like.

Installed the Gen1 GT3 bar yesterday on its medium setting, so far seems great, made the front-end a lot more confidence inspiring, just turns in better and the car feels a lot more stable in high speed turns, no doubt as the rear 23.6mm is much closer to the front 26mm bar which is set to softest. There is still initial understeer at the limit, but less than previously, add more power and it pushes a little more, more steering lock or power brings the rear. Very happy, feels much better and as it's installed on medium I can adjust either way. :)

Also washed and sealed car yesterday with britemax elements on top of the collonite 476s I applied last weekend, paintwork is so slippery. Had an epic drive yesterday and today, car is still spotless. :)

They have been doing it for years, did my GT3 in 2007 but I took it to Fearnsport after this at Silverstone to have it made a bit more road friendly. I remember JZM using loads of packers......at £25 each too!

Yeah shims ain't cheap, I've got 12mm either side I think now giving me -2.0 front camber. :)

In fact I am so excited for next track day as I've got a set of Pirelli Corsa and Michelin CUPs in storage waiting to go on as well. :D
