Porter Cable

Words cannot describe how livid I would be if, after having thrown thousands down the drain by buying a brand new car, the paintwork was anything other than pristine.

Every new car I have ever had has come with swirl marks.

Its a fact that car dealers make awful car detailers. I guess they also let the least senior people clean the cars as it's a bit of a boring job when it's not your own. So they make a right mess.

They are not that bad, but they are far from perfect, from a distance and even upclose they look ok, but by our standards, sometimes the results are far from perfect.

I think the swirly new cars are from the likes of motorpoint etc, pretty much all of the main dealers in my area use detailing companies.Cars nowadays come from afar when new so its no surprise that they are all crapped up.

I've just spent an hour on mine - doing one panel at a time.

No PC, just my own fair hands. I'm using Sonus 1 to cut it back and 3 to buff it back, foam applicator and some nice clean microfibre cloths to clear the mess and buff the paint up.

Reasonably decent results tonight bearing in mind it was my first effort. Certainly the swirl marks are receeding, but it needs a good few more passes & it's friggin hard work by hand.

Really could do with a PC but I'm reluctant to spend £200 odd on something I'm not entirely sure I could trust myself with. Although apparently BMW paint is rock hard so it's pretty fool proof with hard paint.

Agreed, they show mainly under garage lighting rather than sunlight.

I don't buy my cars from such places, my last 10 or so cars have been from a combination of Porsche, VW, BMW, Audi and TVR, so hardly 'supermarkets'. Every single one of them has their own car wash bays and the only time they call in Valet companies, and NOT detailers, is when they make a **** up or someone like me is paying for it!

The PC is orbital so you can't really damage the paint, it's almost impossible

If you wanna borrow mine I'm up in Stratford a fair bit on weekends so you can pop down and pick it up if you want. I've got everything you need (pads, SSR2.5/Pro Polish, nattys wax etc.)

Its usually a case of you have so many cars to get delivered on one day, they cant all be prepared to the kind of standard we are talking about here. A lot of dealerships probably to be fair wont even have the products to use to get to this sort of level.

Every new car I see has marks on it as soon as the plastic comes off it. It is not just a case of the dealership doing a sub standard job on it, a lot of them come pretty bad off the lorries.

To be fair, if you have a new car, then a good washing routine should mean that you never need to use something like the PC.

My car has quite a few swirl marks but I still tried to keep a good washing technique using two buckets and a wash mitt.

It seemed to work as the car stayed pretty much as swirly as it was before. I was happy.

Until I got lazy one night at my dad's and only had a sponge with me. It's crazy how washing it the exact same way, but with a sponge instead of a wash mitt can make so much mess.

I keep my sponge for cleaning my wheels (and yeah, I do have a wheel brush, but haven't used it since I bought it... getting dirty brake dust coloured water in your face is NOT my idea of fun) :D

What a star. :D Yep I'll take you up on that. I think I'm good for polish, just need the PC and suitable pads.

Let me know when you're over there next and I'll pop down. I can send it back down to you by courier.

Yeah I was pretty annoyed with my wheel brush, spent a few quid on a Megs one from OcUK & first time I used it I got diluted wonder wheels in my face.

Never used it since, too messy.

No problem. I don't think I'm up this weekend but I'll be there next weekend I think, just drop me an email and I'll let you know where to meet me. It might be better if you just drop it back off on another weekend really as the transformer is pretty heavy.

Would people be prepared to rent a porter cable? If so, what do you think is a fair price?

Do you have one Tesla?

If not you can also borrow mine (hell you can even practice on my Mondeo if you want!) Merlin is first in line but you can just pop round and borrow it when he's done.

If you find someone local then send em my way too!! Whats really gutting is i paid someone a few months back to do my car and honestly the results were appauling, i got a better result by hand today and i'm sure with a PC or similar the finish would be superb.

Would that happen to the company from Romsey? I searched online a few months ago and found a company based in Romsey who would polish the car with a PC for £60.
