Expecting big gains would make sense if the current cards were held back by the memory bandwidth. They are not.

Obviously the performance depends on the architecture as whole and not on any single design choice.

Even if the 390 is a good card its not really that likely to beat the 980 or titan x by that much (if at all in the case of the latter) so whats the reasoning for people to change? Shelling out more cash for essentially a minimal upgrade if they have a 980? Or trying to recoup some money if they have a titan x? You're probably talking low double digit % differences when it comes to proclaiming a winner between the lot of them, literally the type of differences you'd not really notice ingame.

Then the 980ti is the other factor, it could be faster than a titan x for all we know as the titan x is roughly 30ish percent faster than a stock 980, 980ti could be possibly on par or very slightly below titan x.

Its an awkward position for amd, they're in a spot where they have to best the 980, while having to guesstimate its successors performance and knowing all the while that the titan x will be compared to the 390x regardless of price differences.

PPL are shelling up a lot more to upgrade from 980 to TX.
I know at least two who went 980->980SLI->TX->TXSLI
Pretty stupid IMHO...even if someone forking the money at home, still makes more sense to wait for 980Ti (or 390X) than buy these overpriced things. Especially if you have a 980SLI already.

GTX 980 SLI and TitanX SLI are totally different beasts and going from one to the other is a very good upgrade.

980s are very good @1080p and 1440p but struggle a bit @2160p.

TitanXs are made for 2160p.

I cannot imagine that someone struggle so much with a 980SLI setup that he need TX SLI ASAP and cannot wait 1-2 month to spare a good few hundred £ and get the same performance.
But that's just me.

You won't though, the 980ti or whatever they are going to call it will be limited to 6gb. If you are using a multi GPU setup @2160p there is no point having the grunt if you don't have the memory to back it up.

Most people thinking of buying two Titan X's aren't really bothered about a few hundred quid.

You can wait around forever for equivalent performance for less.

+1

And I would rather pay the extra over say the 980ti and get a much longer usage time out of the TitanXs before an upgrade is needed.

I think most of the original Titans sold are still in use even though they are more than 2 years old.

Just one? Believe that when i see it :p

The 390X is definitely on my shopping list.:D:)

I think the 390X will be great fun and it will be very interesting to see how the new HBM works.

Graphics cards are about fun and not about what brand you use - even if it is those crappy useless overrated overpriced horrible looking TitanXs.;):D
