The 390x has to catch the 980 first then power on towards the titanX, remember the 980 is faster than the 290x, not by much on some situations, but by quite a bit in others.

NVidia striped out all the unnecessary bits to give the Titanx the best performance they could. AMD is unlikely to do that I think, so they will have less room for more performance.
We all hope HBM is the big smoking gun and it brings monumental performance with it. The only thing I will say, is that most new memory technologies look fantastic on paper, but the initial implementations are often not much better than the outgoing memory tech.

End result, I don't expect the 390x to match the TitanX, but it will be quick and at a better price point, just how much better remains to be seen.

I think with texture compression and much higher tessolation performance, both already in Tonga the 290X would be 20% faster. That would easily bring it to 980 performances, after that its about how many more shaders, are they faster than GCN 1.1 shaders and how much will HBM add.
The 390X may be a surprise.

Notice Windows 10 demand catalyst alongside New Product roadmaps. Means AMD are fully aware of capitalising on the launch of Windows 10 as a certain Mr Boomstick pointed out a few pages back.. **cough DM was wrong cough **

Timing / marketing is just as important as the product itself.

win 10 with 390x HBM technology seems to be a winner to me as VR tech need the new dual 395x2 which will be the card to own for VR.

Still a year or so before Oculus Rift is out and by then we will (hopefully) be anticipating the release of the new tech on the next die-shrink.

Dont like the look of that reference card in the slide tho Boom :P hope they ditch that god awful cooler haha, also >3X the performance per watt against GDDR5, which is nice and all but were not really held back too much by GDDR5, only in memory size. But the 50% power saving is nice to hear, as its bolted right next to the core.

Now just remains to be seen how hot the core runs.

Did you guys catch that seasonal improvement of consoles for 2015?

Reading the between the lines and being somewhat hopeful I think we may see Xbox One / PS4 slim this year as well.

AMD have been busy !!
