I think AMD made a mistake with settling as slightly slower and cheaper alternative. It worked for a while but in the long run it destroyed their image.

I really hope that changes and they always go for the kill no matter what it takes. Just like Nvidia.

I think you'll find quite a lot of reviews also compared it to the TI, probably because it was their fastest card at that point before the 980.

Yes, and the 295x2 is AMD fastest card. So comparing the 390X to it to see how much of a performance increase they've managed seems to match.

I think the performance from the 900series is good compared to the 700 series. IMO a fair comparison is only to compare sli and crossfire setups to cards like Titan z and 295x2.

Of course. A number of us are fed up with both companies, and Intel on the CPU side too.

The pace of improvement has slowed to a snail's pace compared to previous eras.

The amount of problems just getting to where we are does not bode well for the future either. 10nm by 2020 maybe?

No way that die is smaller than 560mm2. It's most likely closer to 600mm2.

OK I ran it again and 583mm2 is the new number.

Calculated in GIMP by placing copies of HBM modules over the die btw.

HBM isn't part of the GPU die in the same way GDDR5 memory IC's are not a part of the GPU die.

They have caught AMD asleep for the last what, 2 years or so? If they can sell more GPUs why wouldn't they?

I know. But you can use the known size of the HBM stack to guesstimate the size of the GPU.
