If you are going to do that I think it may involve rewriting the games too.

Compression is ok for moving stuff about but once in memory it could be very awkward.

Compression for system memory was played with in DOS days, and it never really worked out very well.

There is only so far you can take it before the compressing and decompressing takes more time than it saves.

AMD need to stop this kinda price war with Nvidia, if Nvidia want to cut their margins on their GPU's i think AMD should let them get on with it.

No point in selling anything if you can't make any money on it, Nvidia can do that if they want...

Lol, I can just imagine you running a company, it would make a great comedy series :P

Executive: CEO Humbug sir, we put the prices up on all of our products like you said, but now nobody's buying them because our competitors sell things as good and they have a better reputation.

CEO Humbug: Don't worry, there's no point selling something unless you make a nice profit, the money will come in!

Executive: But CEO Humbug sir, the company is losing millions in sales with these inflated prices, why will anyone buy our products when they can get the same price performance from a better brand?

CEO Humbug: It came to me in a dream!

Executive two: CEO Humbug sir, the bailiffs are here for your desk.

CEO Humbug: Excellent, try and convince them to buy one of our products!

If AMD aren't cheaper they won't sell period, it's better for them to be making tiny margins than none at all.

Maybe Fury will be fast enough to allow them to charge extra but at the type of prices being rumoured it's not going to make a lot of difference in the grand scheme of things.

Problem with AMD is AMD

They need

A good product

Good styling

Good marketing

Lets face it when I was young Skoda were a total joke yet they are still in business and are now doing well.

Maybe (I'm still skeptical that AMD are capable of beating 980Ti) Fury will be fast enough to allow them to charge extra but at the type of prices being rumoured it's not going to make a lot of difference in the grand scheme of things, they need the rest of their lineup to be as strong.

Hardware enthusiasts are generally quite a fickle bunch. If the performance is there, the cards will sell.

If AMD have a clear lead they will sell to the people that know about hardware. It's happened in the past and i don't see this changing now. The pricing will have to be right but if they are clearly better then they don't need to price under Nvidia. A clear lead of 10-15% should see them good and let them price around Nvidia. If they are smart though they will stay at least £100 under Titan pricing for the water cooled version. The air cooled version i would have sitting right on top of the 980ti and the pro under as it should still be faster and be the main sales.

Of course for this they need to be a decent chunk faster. If they are on par then all air cooled cards should come in below the 980ti price point.

When you were young Skoda was Skoda. Now Skoda is VW lol so whether they would still be in business without VW is another story but i get your point.

I would not be making GPU's if doing so was losing me money.

What would you do? Would you continue to manufacture GPU's if its going to cost you money for everyone that you make and sell? you would be bankrupt....

But overpricing the GPUs and selling the GPUs at a loss are not the only options.

Selling GPUs cheaper than Nvidia on price/performance while still making a profit works, all they have to do is better promote their products.

I.E they spent $2,500,000 on a billboard in times Square that has their logo on it and a forgettable slogan (I have genuinely forgotten it). When it should have said "Planning a new GPU purchase? Wait! we are about to launch some new ones that offer more performance per $ than anyone else!".

Maybe not those exact words, but that message.

Undercutting Nvidia does not work, they have so much brand power people are willing to pay far more for less just because its Nvidia, people que for 12 hours in the rain outside an Apple store because they have to have the new gadget with Apple Written on it, most of them don't even know why they must have it, all they know is they must have it because its Apple.

I think most desktop custom builders are more intelligent than that but the principle is the same, most don't even consider AMD, for them there is only one Vendor.

If AMD undercut Nvidia enough they might get back to 35% vs 65% market share.
But what would the cost of that be?

If to do that they only make $10 on every GPU they sell while they make $40 per GPU with a 20% market share then its far better for them to be content with a 20% market share.

IMO that is how AMD need to be conducting its business.

AMD R9 R380 and R390 have respun chips

Improved Hawaii and Tonga launch on the 18th

Many things are well known about the AMD Fiji XT HBM card, but we recently learned one interesting fact.

The Radeon R390 an R380 cards will be based on improved Hawaii and Tonga chips. Radeon R9 290X and 290 will be replaced by an improved Hawaii-based chip codenamed Granada that is basically improved Hawaii silicon. This is not a simple rebrand, it is an improved design, or so our sources claim, but they didn’t want discuss the details. The Radeon R9 390X and R9 390 and these cards will launch on June 18th.
