About buying at launch,

If these are only 4GB, it will totally depend on whether that causing hitching / stutter during gaming. Obviously there's no point moving from a Titan X if Fury X's memory amount holds it back. You have to ask yourself though, why would a GPU be designed for 4K if it's memory was going to be a limitation?

None of us can really say anything yet, we need to see how thing performs before we really say..

So close now..

firstly hbm probably works differently lets not apply normal video memory principals to hbm until we see some stats.

pretty sure review sites will be able to confirm pretty quick

However

I would expect this to be like hens teeth in terms of availability hbm yeilds have been repeatedly reported as being poor.

UK generally gets terrible allocation for launch products Gibbo will do his best to get as many as possible as he always does :) but if you want one around launch pre-order on day one.

If you don't mind waiting a month then wait for the reviews. you can always cancel the pre-order but I would be prepared for a very long queue :o

just going off the hype on this forum alone we're expecting it to be popular regardless.

Pre-order!? No stock on the 16th/17th confirmed?

I've been saying this from the moment it became apparent AMD were going the HBM route. There HAS to be a reason for it in my mind... would be utter suicide to release a flagship card with less RAM than your rebranded cheaper models, and then have it fall flat on its face! Benchmarks will reveal all, but I do strongly suspect there is something in the way HBM functions that will have it nipping on the heels of the 980Ti, and perhaps even surpassing it. We shall see... :)

My reaction is, why would we need hbm 2 and 8gb next year if it really has no drawbacks.

It's not about drawbacks (not there won't be any, as there most likely will be, there's always some fault to be found in anything)... it's human nature and the pursuit of greater, bigger, faster. What's over the next hill, and the one after that...? We'd have got nowhere as a species if we just settled when something seemed to be just good enough. Not to mention there's HUGE amounts of money to be made lol! ;)

As I stated previously I'm in the market for a new gpu and monitor, monitor will be 1440p and 144hz 27" so either gsync or Freesync, so either a 980ti or a FuryX, however with dx12 around the corner and my current rig easily handling the games I play (grim dawn, d3, elder scrolls online and guild wars2) I can easily hold out til the next gen cards come next year and monitors should also be in a better place as well hopefully.

A lot depends on how good the furyX is and its price

If the difference between GDDR5 and HBM1 is the same or more than the difference between GDDR3 and GDDR5, then the Fury X should be very fast indeed.

Identical GPU with GDDR3 and GDDR5 has an ~40-50% difference in performance, that's pretty amazing to be honest.

Even if the Fury X was the same speed as a 290X without HBM, adding that in and your at Titan X levels already. There's no doubt in my mind that the Fury X will be a fast card, faster than even the Titan X. The only question is is the 4GB an issue at 1440p or higher in certain VRAM heavy games.

I'm sure AMD knows exactly what the weak point is and will do everything it can to mitigate it. For marketing reasons 8 GB is obviously a better thing to have.
