Exactly, my PC is my fileserver for my HTPC and unless I'm using this PC or my HTPC it's off.I know this is what i could laugh at, is there any called to have a file server when the pc your on could do the job.

It depends really. For people that want to learn about things like nfs or samba then having a fileserver at home makes complete sense. I see more interest / worth in doing something like that instead of installing a watercooler in your PC to get 2% more speed.
I used to have a RAID5 fileserver because I downloaded so much stuff I didn't want to lose. However now I don't need to do that anymore and I don't bother.
Just because you 'don't get it' doesn't really make it laughable.
What is the point if its not downloading something? I dont leave mine on.
