Post how many PCs you run 24/7 at home ?

None

Used to run my main PC for years 24/7, but after a shocking electric bill it now gets turned off overnight and when not being used :-)

I know this is what i could laugh at, is there any called to have a file server when the pc your on could do the job.

I have the 'server' in my room, and it's on constantly as I go to bed before my house mates, and I go away at weekends, unlike them. So I leave it on so they can access files, and also we don't want everyone using the bandwidth the server does most of the downloading, people chuck the files they want on it, and it chugs away and downloads it.

Once I get a Sata pci card I can then put my media drives into it, and they can not complain if I turn off my pc, or am not there at the weekends, as everything is there still.

It depends really. For people that want to learn about things like nfs or samba then having a fileserver at home makes complete sense. I see more interest / worth in doing something like that instead of installing a watercooler in your PC to get 2% more speed.

I used to have a RAID5 fileserver because I downloaded so much stuff I didn't want to lose. However now I don't need to do that anymore and I don't bother.

Just because you 'don't get it' doesn't really make it laughable.

I've recently changed over to using a fileserver instead of leaving my main PC on all the time. My file server is a very low spec PC, underclocked and undervolted that sits under my desk and remains on 24/7. My main rig is overclocked, overvolted and watercooled, so using a fileserver means I can leave it on using less power and my housemates can access my crap without my main rig being on! That and my P3 750 IPCop router are the only things of mine that stay on 24/7! :)

Well i must admit, i do test software etc on spare servers. But i do this in work?

Can't sleep knowing there's a computer been left on. Especially not when I can hear it.

So none.

And I don't wanna pay too much leccy :)

One, though it runs Folding. I don't pay bills and it's just convenient to have it on whenever I need it and for downloading.

1.5 PCs I guess.
I have a fileserver on 24.7 and a PVR box that is on hibernate except when there's a recording scheduled, when it will wake itself back up. I've done all I can to reduce power usage: The server has no monitor, MSTSC/VNC only, HDs spin down after 1hrs non-access, got one of the lower-wattage C2D6400s as soon as they came out, and now it's at an acceptable level in terms of leccy bills. Added to this by replacing all bulbs with energy saving ones ;)
Two things, though: Folding@home adds a suprising amount to your bill, so I don't do it ever. And, a backup besides my servers raid arrays is pretty much crucial imho. This doesn't need to be on 24.7, just when a backup scheduled. Unfortunately, my raid failed mere days before I'd pencilled in building my external backup.

My desktop PC is on 24/7. I only reboot it if it acts up.

I have another PC that has been on for 3 past three months - it's running SpinRite reparing a faulty hard drive.

Then I have a laptop which is mostly plugged into the mains on standby.

I always make sure to turn of the monitors when not in use.

0m although we have 4 pc's ( One family pc downstairs, 1 pc per bedroom) and about 5 more for sale ( and about 200 bloody mainboards and 50 gfx cards scattered around everywhere :() , only 2 or 3 pc's are used at once usually and all are turned off at nights.

Sometimes leave mine on overnight when downloading.

My dad also leaves his computer on overnight, but thats because hes an awful insomniac, so is usually using the computer more than he is sleeping :)

Well, seeing as this thread just won't die... :)

Currently 5 due to the king's gauntlet contest (see links in sig), normally 4...

One in the lounge - media centre/freeview receiver. Has a fair few 'rules' to pick up specific programmes whenever they're on, and some of those happen overnight.

In the main PC room - file/download/remote access server - acts as backup server to my big stats site (teamocuk.com), so it always has to be on to accept updates, plus I access it remotely so it has to be on for that too (it's UPS-protected, so when I say always on I pretty much mean it). Main PC - use for work and play so if I'm at home it's probably doing something. Mac Mini - could be off but uses so little power anyway I don't really notice it.
