Cant seem to get a better 2001 score although my 2003 is so good ??

Im sorry I find this a joke, in your 3dmark score on 2001 you say
Asus 9800XT @ 460/385 (artifacts)

And then you want to claim top spot

Everybody can overclock their graphics card to insane speeds whilst it artifacts. The point is most people wont as they know it damages their card and also that it is effectively cheating.
You are posting a score that your card cannot actually run.

Sorry to upset you AlienWhere...

1) The comment of (Artifacts) on my 3dMark01 score was a persoanl note to myself on the fact that on the very dark ares of a textures i saw a few VERY small white dots... I noted this because its the first time i've ever seen them and I wanted reference point for where they began from.

2) I was never claiming "Top Spot" for my performance in 3dMark01 I was actually referring to 3dMark03 as you'll see when you read it properly.

3) It was only with the settings on 2001 did I see these white dots (pixels) if that is 'cheating' then please forgive me and ignore that 3dMark01 score... Im not bothered, but the 2003 score is valid.

I hope that clears things up a little...

Im sorry, when I re-read my post I can see that it is easily taken the other way, I did not mean any dig at you and by all means congrats on your overclock.

In the past I have seen many threads with "i have got XXX score card artifacts" and your "yay I should now have the top spot" on a card that does in fact artifact according to your own words made me put you down into that group.

Artifacts arent always easy to spot and it is however easy to post a huge score that doesnt reflect the card. What I was refering to was the process of running components beyond their boundaries simply to sit on the top spot.

You have said how your system manages this fine and so I am by no means accusing you of anything :) You have a great system worthy of that score

Since when has benching with artifacts been cheating, I thought most people did it. I can only get 280/590 out of this ti4200 without artifacts, the difference with artifacts is like 500 marks or more.

IC7 Max3 + 2.8c + stock hs cost me £45 inc - chip has 3 missing pins but still works okay
Ti4200 cost me £45 inc
256mb pc3200 cost me £17 inc

No problems AlienWhere, Thanx for the reply post, I have never really been "into" benchmarking and thus I have no idea what is cheating etc.

I appreciate what you have said and I agree with you about simply running a card way beyound its limit to simply get a high score, that does indeed seem crazy.

Glad we agree now tho... and thanx for your honesty ;)

NB* Also does anyone else see that in the table... it seems that the 9800 Pro's perform better than the 9800XT's in the 3dMark01 tests and the 9800xt's are the better performers in the mewer 3dMark03 tests ?

3dmark03 is mostly a graphics benchmark, 2001 a system benchmark.

Probably because the people that overclock pros to xt speeds tend to overclock their bus speed further which has a much larger effect on 01 than having an extra 128mb of graphics memory.

As for artifacts, it is well known that 3dmark03 nature test generates artifacts (i know that it was 2001 that had them, maybe it heated up more) when games/other benchmarks show no sign of them, but if people run their graphics card at speeds so high they can barely see the screen for artifacts then that is just wrong. Find a happy medium, like cashman has done. Nice score btw :D

Cheers for that [die]Deadly... that helps clear it up some. I did notice that my P4 clock speeds do little to affect my 3dMark03 score yet they massively affect my 3dMark01 score.

I have OCZ Gold 4000 RAM... will it make any difference to my scores if i lower the timings from the default 2.5-4-4-7 to 2.5-4-3-7? The reason I ask is as thats the only figure i can change and still have the PC boot :( (actually I havent tried changing the 7 to a 6... will this make a difference?).

I'm crying out for the vDimm mod so I can fire 3.3v up its batty and try for even lower timings.

Again, thanx for the help mate...

CPU does have an effect in 2003 with the "Wings of Fury" test. My little ole system (XP-M @ 2400Mhz) gets wiped by faster processors in this test, yet in the other tests my higher clocked XT wins. Ho hum :)

here's mine:

3DMark2001

23052
(P4 @ 3906 MHz, Herc 9800 pro @ 492/382 - 3.9 Omega, Corsair XMS3500, IC7-G)

3DMark2003

7559
(P4 @ 3714 MHz, Sapphire 9800XT @ 480/400 - 3.10 Omega, OCZ 4200EL, IC7-G)

I havn't ran 3dmark since last year, so the 2k3 driver isn't approved and probably shouldn't be included (wasn't specified so wasn't sure). I'll try and bench again with a newer driver if I fix the card.

can't wait to see what we'll all be getting with the new cards/platforms... :)

Well that could be true, as my score went down about 20 3DMarks on '01 when i flashed my 9800Pro into an 9800XT, but my 3Dmark '03 score went up 500 :)

Shame Madonion won't take my '03 score :(
