You're right, we used to have a Mk.I 3.0L Ghia and that thing was bloody huge. Glorious thing though, red with a black vinyl roof just looked right.

Not in the UK. The whole Ford range has gotten a bit odd though as each car has effectively replaced the next one in terms of size.
The current focus for example is longer than the mk1 Mondeo. Same goes for the current fiesta vs mk1 focus. The ka is 700mm longer than the mk1 fiesta.
It's a bit of an oddity really.

This is not correct. Not according to Wikipedia's dimensions anyway.

Current fiesta = up to 4406mm
Mk1 focus = from 4175mm
Current focus = 4378mm to 4668mm
Mk1 Mondeo = from 4481 to 4631mm

Conclusion mk1 focus smaller than a current fiesta.
Current focus bigger than mk1 Mondeo.

Current Focus hatchback, i.e. the one most people think of, is shorter than a mk1 Mondeo hatchback. The Estate is a tad longer (or the same length as the later mk1 Mondeo estate), I'll give you that.

The Fiesta saloon is longer than the mk1 Focus hatchback, but the Fiesta hatchback, i.e. the one that most people actually attribute with being a Fiesta isn't.

Anyway, splitting hairs aside, we all know cars have become bigger over time for various reasons, and it's not really a surprise. Ford aren't the only ones either.
