Post Your Home Cine & HiFi Kit...

Asus P8Z77-V mobo running via optical to 5.1 to yamaha DSP-E800 reciever amp, Left and Right channels alesis M1 actives, Center and surrounds are alesis M1 passives. Sub is a DIY build - dual REL Quake drivers and a BK 300w amp module tuned to give a flat response to about 35hz with slow rolloff below.
All signal cabling is Van Damme tourgrade with Neutrik connections.

For watching movies i put the 27" screen central to the sound field [desk]. Used to have a 40" bravia, but it was too much when playing games at the desk. The 27" does a nice job i think, and sat 2meters back on the sofa is still reasonable. I might add an audio transparent motorised screen and HD projector one day but for the moment there isn't much need [and id end up single!].

i work summers in touring sound/lighting hence the rack build, with the idea of being able to take the rack out as a 'budget' 5.1 cinema playback rig, using a large Barco projector/screen from the hire stock.

Thanks for looking... be kind!

not speakons, all line level signal on van damme XKE cabling, and speaker cabling on van damme black series tourgrade. Speaker termination is the standard terminals which come with them.

none of this 'audiophile' rubbish bought by gullible idiots!! The stuff i use is what is used by the artists in the studios and stage setups themselves. Never got why you would want to spend tons of money on anything labeled 'audiophile grade' when you get absolutely no electrical benefit - thus no reality benefit. Most of it is simply clever marketing and unhealthy markups.

Ha no doubt, speakons very useful though, much better than banana plugs! Saw you mentioned Neutrik and assumed that was the connection you were on about

well, for convenience then yeah id agree, hence pretty much every touring/mobile speaker/amp has them, BUT, they aren't as acoustically transparent as people are led to believe. A chap i respect highly did blind listening tests with high end opus kit [stuff destined for theater], comparing running banana plugs from amp-speaker, and speakons amp-speaker. The bananaplugs were meant to be an improvement - of which im sure they were having a larger electrical contact area etc.

Consider in a touring rack, you would often have a short internal speakon patch from amp to patch panel [2*speakon], then from there the main run to the first cabinet [4*sp], a daisy chain to the next cab [6*sp], etc etc. Consider on large scale line array it is normal for an 8core run to power say 4x 4way line array elements [norm 16ohm] - you have 8* speakons in rackpatch, and another 8* speakons to run/link the elements, you suddenly end up with 16x speakons in one run, which if they do degrade the signal presents a considerable loss in quality.

Of course in real world situations, there are much larger issues such as the quality of the talent, acoustics of the venue/arena, etc etc which make relatively trivial matters like this pointless compared to the benefits of fast reliable locking connections.

Thankfully I dont deal with anything like that, the theatre and other rooms at work with lots of speakers just have 1 run from amp to speaker and the speakons have been fantastic. like you say, wouldnt use them in the example you gave but if your daisy chaining anything you get loss.

However as for one connector being better than another and blind tests.....imo.....its all snake oil.

haha well when i say one thing better than another, this was on stupidly high quality speakers with lovely ribbon tweeters etc, not your typical noisemaker [in a heavily acoustic treated test room]. In this situation, i can believe the speakons were noticeable due to the serious quality of the kit being used - especially as the chap who ran the test has amazing ears.

Then again speakons are amazing little connectors, durable, quick, locking, solid. Can't complain!!

got a lend of a friend's camera for the weekend for some car pics, thought I'd take some of the lunge too. not the best - don't have a tripod, low light, etc.

Kit is B&W CM9's, CM centre 2, Marantz SR 6006 networked receiver. TV is a basic LG 50" plasma, pretty good for the price.

acoustic treatment is 50mm acoustic foam wrapped in acoustically transparent fabric. 12 panels in total. they go all around the back of the room to cover the rear speakers - there's no way you're seeing the back of the room today - it's our office area and is a total dump at the moment :P
We're [hopefully] moving out of this rented house soon to a place we're buying where I'll have a dedicated cinema and listening room.

The way we have it setup now means it's the most anti-social living room around, we're buggered when guests come around really as it's just set up for us to watch and listen.

If you're wondering - it's the window that's not in the middle of the room, so are the curtains, and so on - throws everything off.

*none of the decoration / flooring is my choice - rented property. cabinet and sofa looked great in our previous modern flat.

that 15 inch driver is the dead one from my sub... cunningly moved it out of shot: failed.

I was wondering more what on earth that rug "thing" is than the curtains/windows :P

That's Ralph. he was a reindeer from Norway. suits the room a lot more IRL than it looks here I suppose. We bought it as a souvenir from Oslo where we got engaged and will most likely be the palette for whatever room he ends up in next. It matches the walls and the panels, and even the curtains but doesn't quite match the carpet and NOTHING matches the sofa, such a fugly colour. the only thing that will match the sofa is another sofa ha ha.

(little did I know they had these rugs for sale in just about every tourist shop in Norway, usually in a pile next to the postcards - until after we bought it)

(I have since bought a longer, thinner sub cable which runs nicely along the skirting board out of sight) :p

Setup
Screen: Pioneer Kuro KRP-600M
Receiver: Onkyo TX-NR906
Front speakers: Monitor Audio GS60 x2
Rear & side speakers: Monitor Audio GSFX x4
Centre speaker: Monitor Audio GSLCR
Subwoofer: SVS PC-Ultra

Got hold of some tannoy super red monitor 10's to replace my Kef Chorales. Certainly have a different character to the way they sound vs the kef's, probably because of the dual concentric design having a very different polar pattern. Tonally, there is less of a difference, mainly just more LF.
