Can copy from a USB drive yeah, if you're wanting to stream/copy from a network you'll need Linux installed.

EDIT:

ElRazur, sorry for butting in by the way, was just passing and thought I could answer some questions :)

El, maybe this should go in the testing then asked to get moved?

When is it out and how much will it cost?
The PS3 will be available in the UK on 23rd of March for £425.

What display connections come in the box?
The PS3 only ships with a composite cable, but many retailers are giving an HDMI cable in with PS3 bundles.

Can i play my old PS2 and PSOne games?
Most of them, but not all. 75% of PS2 games are backwards compatible from day 1. Some with minor issues, some with bigger issues. But Sony have said they will constantly be adding and fixing titles on the list.
For a full list of games check out the list
http://faq.eu.playstation.com/bc/

Do i need a PS2 memory card?
No. You create a virtual memory card on the Hard Disk from the XMB for your PS2 saves. If you have old game saves you want to transfer from a PS2 memory card to the PS3, you will need to buy a USB PS2 Memory Card Adapter to copy the saves. This allows you to copy from the Memory Card to the PS3, but you can not copy from the PS3 to the Memory card.

What are the supported Media Formats?
BluRay and DVD
CD's
MP3 for Audio and MP4 for video. Any xvid.divx avi's will need to be converted to MP4 format prior to putting on the PS3.
Files can be read from USB storage Devices and from the Media cards compatible with the media card reader on the 60GB model. The files can also be transfered from the media onto the Hard Disk. Note that the media must be in FAT32 file format.

Does the PS3 controller have rumble?
At the moment the PS3 controller does not have rumble. The PS3 controller does use the motion sensing SIXAXIS controller.

Will i be forced into using the SIXAXIS' moton sensing?
At the moment, most games allow you to turn the feature on and off. If you do not want to use the tilt you do not need to. Though disabling this will NOT enable rumble.
But do not be surprised if in future, when the SIXAXIS is more closely integrated into the game, if you are forced into using it for certain features.

Can i use my PS2 game peripherals?
The short answer is No. Because when you play a PS2 title on the PS3, you need to press the PS button on the SIXAXIS. Peripherals such as Guitar Hero gutuitars and the Buzz controllers do not have a PS button so do not work. There is a 3rd party making an adaptor and should be available in the next month or so.

What happens if i download a PSP game from the PS Store?
When you download a PSP title, you hook up your PSP to the PS3 via USB and transfer the whole game data, plus a security certificate to your PSP. So you will need a Memory stick on your PSP with enough size. Example size is syphon Filter is 400MB.

What is PSP remote play/Can i stream from the PS3 to the PSP?
With remote play, if you are in WiFi Range of the PS3 you can stream your Video and music from the PS3 direct to your PSP, This is done in a WiFi Ad-Hoc Method).
The way which it does this is like your PSP is remote controlling your PS3. So you can't do anything on your PS3 when using remote play. I have streamed a 1080p demo of GTHD to the PSP and it was fine.
With firmware update 1.6 out on March 22nd, you will be able to connect to the PS3 through the same WiFi access point. This would take it to an Infrastructure Level. It is the plan for you to be able to access your content from anywhere in the world, but this is a bit off at the moment.

Is the playstation network free?
Yes. you can use multiplayer in games, have a friends list and access the PS store for free. You can also text message and voice/video chat with someone else on your friends list. The PS store also contains a lot of free content, Demo's, movie trailers and game design videos, but there is also premium content that you need to pay for.

Is the PS network as disjointed as everyone says?
Not really. The PS network available from the XMB show your friends list and will show what your friends are playing. It will also show you players met in multiplayer games (though this is not implemented in all titles).
Some games also have there own independant buddy list. The up side to this is you don't need to shift through dozens of people who do not own a game to find someone you know who is playing it.
Also, you can not send messages whilst in game or cross game invites.

Is the PS network Localized to region?
For some games on the PS2 network, mainly ones that used dedicated servers (usualy SCE titles) the world was divided up to US, EU and Asia. This means people in the EU could not play people in the US. This, however is not applicable in a lot of 3rd party games, such as EA titles.
The same at the moment is being done with the PS3. Resistance: Fall of Man, for example has a US region, an EU region and a Asian region. One of the reasons this has always beeen the case with the PS network is to reduce the amount of lag. This however is going to change. Insomniac games in May are going to set up some world wide servers to allow cross continental play. I would expect other 1st party titles to follow suit. But many 3rd party titles, this will not apply too as they do not use a dedicated server so allow play over the world. Examples of this are RR7 and CoD3.

Is it as quiet as Sony say, or is it more Sony Hype?
My personal experience is they where telling the truth. It is whisper quite, and i would be surprised if it is louder than a slim PS2.

Does it get hot and over heat?
Like most computer type products the PS3 does get warm around the air vents. But that is the point of the air vents. If you do not block them up, i wouldn't expect any over heating issues.

Can i choose my resolution?
Yes. If you are using HDMI you can choose the resolutions you wish from 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 720i, 480p and 480i. The PS3 will attempt to set your display to the highest resolution it can. It many cases this will force 720p TV to have a 1080i setting.
The options can be changed from within the XMB, under Settings - Display Settings - Video Output Settings

How do i obtain the latest firmware?
You can do it using a few methods.
1. If your PS3 is connected to the internet you can go to system update under settings on the XMB and choose update from the internet, and it will download and update automatically.
2. You can download it to your PC then transfer it to the PS3 using either USB drive, Burn to CD or, if you have a 60GB, from a compatible Media card. After you do this, you choose update from media at System update.
3. If a game requires a specific minimum firmware level, the minimum required firmware will be on the disc. This will then be accessable from the XMB.

Can i obtain a manual online?
You can find all the settings for within the XMB at
http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/index_display.html
You can also find more information here
http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/PS3/Manuals

Can my PS3 help cure cancer?
In a way. There is a program coming with Firmware 1.6 called Folding@home. This is a scientific program to study the behaviour of proteins. The info for it is too much for this faq, but have a look at the following links

I was just about to post that he always ask the most difficult ofall questions.... :p I think Joebob or Jumpurs is the man here. :)

Its not difficult i thought its a major part of owning both products?
Would be great to use the PS3 as a media server and stream cartoons, dvds etc to the daughters PSP in her bedroom etc.

Good one man. Have some cookies jumpurs.

What do you mean testing?

IIRC a lot of people build a faq in the testing forum then ask a mod to move it into here.

btw i will just update my original post and not add dozens of replies :)

I was only pulling your legs. Mine is 20gig version and my manual is in Japanese....aint much i do with it other than play games and download for now.

Thanks for he replies guys, nice one. A few more though...

Will Multiplayer game servers be ones started by gamers like on xbox live (GOW host has huge advantage for example), or will there be dedicated game servers like on most pc games?

Do you have to use the sixaxis feature or can it be ignored and just use the buttons instead?

Is it really as quiet as everyone says?

Anything else i need to know?

:)

One thing the PS3 can also do is play the new AVCHD codec which is used by newer HD camcorders. I'm thinking of getting one of these if I ever win the lottery.

Oh i see what you mean. Well if you would take over then, it can be moved then.

If MP3 is supported is their a limit on the kps for playback.

ie: 128kbs 192kbs all the way to varible bit rate?

PS3 VID Converter
This seems a usefull tool for video conversioins supporting upto 1080p.

Anyone use it? I assume with the right software on the PC ALL video formats can be converted for the PS3?

What happens with Blu-ray films if you don't have 1080p TV?

Do they go to 1080i or 720p or 576p or what?

It depend on the tv you have and the setting on your ps3. Mine is set to switch between 1080p, i, and 720p.
