Post your Ps3 Faqs here.

A technical query here, I have my ps3 hooked up via component and have tried to link it to my 5.1 amp using optical, now it outputs audio from games and movies but it wont output sound from the xmb or any music files I play on it, any help please as this is really getting on my nerves thanx

I use optical output and I can hear music/beeps from the XMB.
In my optical settings, I have four boxes checked (from memory) - 2.1 Dolby, 5.1 DD and two boxes for LPCM.

How is the ps2 virtual memory card done on the ps3? Is it just another directory you can copy files to using whatever method you use to get mp3s etc to the ps3, i.e. memory stick/psp or whatever?

I think you have to use a USB to PS2 MC adapter to transfer files across, but for any fresh games started saves will go to the virtual memory card which you will see in the options if you go up when you get to the Game section on XMB.

You can download "other" gamesaves off the net and just transfer them with a memory stick into the right directory (can't remember off hand). Like loads of cash and all licences for GT for instance. :D

I've potentialy found a way of converting xport/max drive files back into the ps2 individual file format, so I was asking what the directory format of the virtual ps2 save folder is on the ps3 and whether you can simply copy files to it. That way if you already had a max drive or xport you wouldn't need to spend £££ on another official sony gizmo.

Is there any way to organise the Video section of the XMB? I would like to have folders so that my pr0n doesn't show up.

I wonder if this can be solved by creating a new user? Does each user have their own specific files under Photo / Music / Video in the XMB?
EDIT: Creating a new user doesn't affect the media. They are all still visible.

When the files are copied to the HDD from memory stick or usb device the folders are lost (I think).

I put in a PSP memory card that had folders under the "Music" folder and they displayed correctly. I think when I copied these to the hard disk I lost the folders. I may have copied them wrong. I will do some tests later to check.

So far i am very impressed that quicktime HD trailers only need a 5-10 sec conversion and they can be copied to your PS3 and viewed. (I think because quicktime HD is already in the correct format and the container just needs modifying without re-encoding the file).

I got one of those 350mb divx files of a 42 minute clip that had non copyrighted material in it and to convert this to PS3 in mpeg4 format takes only 10 minutes.

I do all of this using http://www.ps3video9.com

Load the card into the PS3 and it should show up under the music icon. Then browse to the music and press the Triangle to get a copy menu appear. You can then copy individual files or select "Copy Multiple" which lets you copy more files.

I have used this exact method to load many pictures from my Sony Camera's memory stick pro duo, but I believe the procedure should be the same for any memory card or USB device.
