** POTENTIALLY THE BEST GAMING MONITORS YET!! ** Acer 34" Ultra-wides

Acer Predator X34 BLB

Hi all,

I just received a Predator x34, aside from not hitting 100Hz it's got some light bleed, do you think this is excessive?

P5xj1gQ.jpg

It's much worse in the bottom left as you can see above.

It's not great, although these photos tend not to reflect real life, necessarily... and when it comes to actual usage, you MAY not notice unless you're playing a very dark game with no lights on in the room. I've not seen an X34 that doesn't have a fair amount of BLB though, especially when photographed in this manner.

That's pretty typical using a camera which over exposes the image. Usually it's the top right and more the top left that show some BLB in normal use. I've not taken mine apart but it'll be how the panel is mounted in the case. I can make mine disappear by simply applying the lightest of pressure to the corners.

Coincidentally yesterday I pressed the corners in at the top and the panel pretty much stayed pressed in and the BLB is practically non-existent now. However my panel is over 6 months old now and so may have loosed off some from the heat cycles.

Still not brave enough to take the case apart and investigate but on a 4K UHD monitor I also had last year it was common practice to adjust the screws behind the edge of the case to adjust the BLB. Not quite in the same cost bracket as this monitor though.

With the exposure adjusted, I imagine this is how it would more or less look (with a sensible brightness setting anyway :p):

If so and with a normal brightness setting and the above suggested fixes don't work.... Personally I wouldn't accept that, heck I wouldn't accept any bleed whatsoever especially considering the price...

I have certainly seen much much much worse though :o

The photo above looks pretty good. If you won't accept BLB then don't buy any IPS panel imho.

Spot on Nexus, that's about 30-40% brightness. It's noticeable in games (Elite) and on any backgrounds with uniform colours. (Left bottom corner, the others are only noticeable when watching films with dark scenes.)

I was tempted to try applying pressure or adjusting it but being 2 days old and not very cheap...

I wonder why they don't distribute the pressure more evenly? Can't be difficult to spread the load across the bezel edges with some padding and many clips\screws?

I hate returning things for silly reasons! I could probably live with it after a while...

And someone's recent post on his average FPS figures:

Rise of the Tomb Raider (antistropic x4, HXAA antiailsing) - 50FPS
Fallout 4 - 38 FPS
Shadow of Mordor - 67 FPS
Grid 2 - 61FPS
Just Cause 3 - 59 FPS
Bioshock Infinite - 83 FPS
HITMAN - 57 FPS

It was me who posted those FPS scores - Grid 2 is actually Grid Autosport - the FPS I get in Grid 2 is around 75 FPS.

Also mentioned earlier - something wasn't quite right with Fallout 4 - I'm now getting around 65 FPS :-)

Far Cry 4 averages about 55 FPS with everything maxed.

severe IPS glow, dead pixels or/and the black flickering that a few are reporting when using freesync @3440x1440 75HZ

IPS glow is IPS glow every IPS panel I've ever owned has had it, if you don't want it don't buy IPS. As for black flickering... never heard of it and I don't recall anyone mentioning it in this thread either.

I would try fixing it yourself first and using a lint free cloth to clean/rub the screen whilst applying some pressure otherwise you are just going to be playing the panel lottery RMA game.

If it doesn't bother you then keep it and enjoy it.

I had to go through 2 LG 29um65 to get one free from back light bleed, the first 2 were just awful for the bottom left corner, dark content was unbearable (at the time alien isolation was out and the backlight bleed ruined the game completely)

The photo above looks pretty good. If you won't accept BLB then don't buy any IPS panel imho.

That is the problem though, IPS panels never use to be this bad, previous IPS panels from years ago were back light bleed free (obviously there were still bad units out there though but not to the same extent as now), you felt safe buying monitors, where as now, it seems like you have to play the panel lottery game with any new IPS monitor regardless of brand, even the new 27" 1440 IPS panels are plagued with bleed issues :(

And that is where we come into it, if the majority of people put up with bleed like the above then the manufacturers will see no point in spending more time and money in ensuring that quality is of a satisfactory level as they will think we are happy with the current quality.

I suppose I could live with the 3 other corners of minor bleed although not really ideal especially for a £800+ monitor imo.

Yes every IPS panel has it but it varies, this 3rd one of my 29um65 is significantly worse for the left side compared to the first 2 I had when it comes to IPS glow.

Flickering issues are a problem with the AMD version.

EDIT:

And that is what is frustrating, IPS glow could be more or less eliminated if monitor manufacturers started to use A-TW polarisers again.

Ah nice!

With the next gen GPUs, you should be able to get more or less 75FPS locked then

what are consumer rights in replacements/refunds

hi I am after some advise.
my x34 has now been sent for repair a 3rd time to acer.
it had the whole main board replaced last time it went to there repair center.
now the monitor developed a dead pixel.
and I was asked to ship it back for assessment.
I told the agent that the company they used to do the repair recommended a new unit if it developed another fault after the second issue.
now acer are telling me if it doesn't meet the dead pixel policy they will return it.
and I have now told them if they don't replace it I don't want it back.
am I entitled legally to a full refund?
what are my rights as a consumer here
can anyone help/give some advise please.

Got my monitor set up today, overall I'm pleased with it although there are some issues, there is a slight gap of a few millimeters between the bezel and the screen at the bottom center of the monitor (where the 'acer' text is), the other issue is that the colours don't seem as vivid as my old Samsung 27" VA panel, probably just needs calibrating properly.

No dead or stuck pixels that I can see so that's a bonus.
Will check BLB later when it's abit darker.

Can't comment on Freesync as im using a 980Ti, looking to swap to a Fury X.

Just ran the Grid Autosport benchmark again since upgrading to the i7 6700K (above FPS scores are with the i5 6600K) and the score has increased by 6FPS to 67 FPS. Impressive given the FPS difference between the 2 CPUs is usually less than 1!

You can certainly overclock it, atleast with an nvidia GPU via a custom resolution, can you not do a similar thing with an AMD card then?

I'm not completely sure but I have a fury X and when I looked to go and do it the facility to create a custom profile was greyed out. Maybe I just need to change a setting though. I'd like to try it myself if it can be done. Anyone managed to do this on the Freesync X34 and an AMD card?

Got the FreeSync version today, couldn't resist the sale. Noticed I got one from an older batch (September), hoped for the best and overall it's neat and stunning in most games, until I booted up Elite... one corner has rather noticeable yellow IPS glow.

Has anybody seen it settling down after a few days of use or am I stuck with the yellow corner (barring RMAs)?

Just bought the Acer Predator XR341CKB for £560, I know some people have had issues with this monitor but at that price I think it's worth trying :)

Think mine probably shared the van ride down the M5:D, like yourself thought I would take a punt on it, I received a built Nov unit

I plugged it in and checked for an hour for issues, no flickering/on-off and blb looks fine to me, its there if i turn the lights off and stare at a black screen but as I don't intend to do that much its fine. I did take a picture and it looks similar smurfins picture but the picture doesn't represent what I see looking at it, no where near as bad?

Happy I set about stripping down my eyefinity and got the Acer setup, eventually after fighting with the mount for an hour.

once finished fired it up and very briefly my **** fell out, screen would blank out for several to 10 seconds then back on :(. Before Panic set in too bad I pulled the display cable and threw another in and it came to life.

Touch wood its been fine for several hours. Over all happy with it.
