** POTENTIALLY THE BEST GAMING MONITORS YET!! ** Acer 34" Ultra-wides

Apologies for the noobness but does owning a gtx980 mean I really must stump up all the extra cash for a g sync module or would free sync monitor considerably cheaper still give me a good refresh rate?

You won't be able to use Freesync with a G-Sync card. You will be limited to the max refresh of that monitor. Freesync/G-Sync is not about a 'good refresh rate'... it's about minimising tearing when you get drops in frame rate and providing you with smooth gameplay. You will not get that function and benefit if you use a G-Sync GPU with a Freesync monitor, or vice versa. Doesn't mean you won't get smooth gameplay though, if your card is more than powerful enough to run the game smoothly.

that looks a great deal on the freesync option. quick question - I haven't had time to whistle through the thread. However I have a 290x and was going to hold off upgrading until the new slew of cards are released. Is it enough to drive the monitor with a high degree of eye candy turned on?

Depends on the games you play.

G/free sync will keep games feeling "smooth" at <50 FPS with a screen tear free experience but as PCM2 and others who are sensitive to motion clarity etc. have said, low FPS is still low FPS so 30-40 FPS won't be nice if you are very sensitive to motion blur like me :(

Somewhat decent video showing performance differences between a 970/980ti and 3440x1440 + 2560x1080, a 290x will be a bit faster than the 970, more so with the latest games.

And someone's recent post on his average FPS figures:

I have the Acer X34 75Hz 3440x1440 Freesync monitor and the MSI R9 Fury X. Thought I'd share some of the FPS scores I get for games with everything maxed:

Rise of the Tomb Raider (antistropic x4, HXAA antiailsing) - 50FPS
Fallout 4 - 38 FPS
Shadow of Mordor - 67 FPS
Grid 2 - 61FPS
Just Cause 3 - 59 FPS
Bioshock Infinite - 83 FPS
HITMAN - 57 FPS

Hi ok having my monitor back for 2 days since it had it's second repair
it has not developed a dead pixel.
only a single one mind you but does anyone know if i can get it repaired
with a single dead pixel or does it have to be more.
just once you know it is there it is quite annoying especially in the top centre of the screen.
i have tried running some software on it to try and fix it but it did not work.
as this is the second time my panel has had an issue
i fear it is just the start of more issues to come
not had much luck with my monitor it seems to have had a few issues after a few months of owning it.
:)

After many months of owning this monitor still hugely satisfied with it, no issues at all. Cracking picture and overall excellent purchase! And I am a really fussy bugger when it comes to TVs and monitors.

Just went to look at the acer 34" freesync and noticed the price was further reduced to £560 from the original sale price of £600

I wonder why they are/were selling that model for so little, at least compared to other 34" screens....

1. problems?
2. something new and better upcoming?
3. just trying to get as many sales as possible for the quarter report?
4. not selling as well/quick as they had hoped?

I've got one and have no problems with it other than the usual IPS issues, there are probably less issues than with the Gsync i.e. no "scan lines" etc. I'd hazard a guess that as apparently the Gsync model outsells it by 10:1 or somesuch they're simply not shifting them in the numbers they'd like. And I'd say that was down to the fact that these are premium products and those who can afford premium products are more likely to own Nvidia.

Yeah when I saw £560, I almost pulled the trigger but it still isn't worth the outlay coming from my 29um65 imo and more so... I am not playing panel lottery with regards to back light bleed (I would not put up with any at <30% brightness), severe IPS glow, dead pixels or/and the black flickering that a few are reporting when using freesync @3440x1440 75HZ

Wow, £560... Kinda glad there are none left, it's just saved me £560! Have been hovering over buying one all week at £600 and if I had spotted the further discount it would have been too much! No way I can justify gsync cost over freesync when there's that much price difference.
