Power Tools & General Tools Recommendations & Advice

Anyone seen any offers for 12v (or less) lighter drill driver, i've got an 18v Dewalt one and a separate impact driver, but for smaller easier jobs or ones in awkward spaces could do with something a bit smaller and lighter.

I'd highly recommend the Milwaukee M12 fuel range. Mines been abused at work for years now and it still going strong. It's torque level is much better than most other 12v offerings.

This seems like a decent price:

Or an extra £30 if you want 2 x 6ah batteries

Great, thanks. Am I right in thinking one method of welding is harder then the [most common] other?
I would like to try it on the cheap but beginner kits are still a tad pricy for something I may never use again.
MiG is the easiest to learn as a beginner, TiG is the hardest to master but once you get that muscle memory you can do some stunning welds (if that's such a thing :D)

I’m tempted to buy a cordless combi drill and spotted the Bosch PSB 1800 combi on Amazon. Would this make a decent all rounder for home use?

Got to the stage in our house renovation where a lot of plasterboard is being fitted - managed to borrow a friends Bosch plasterboard gun which made life a lot easier for our first batch of boarding.

Came to the next batch of boarding and his gun wasn't available, so took the plunge and bought our own - went with this as already have DeWalt batteries/tools and it's been absolutely fantastic!

It simply works better than the Bosch, but that may be as it's new :p

B&Q doing a decent brushless combi + impact + 2x 5ah batteries for 180.

Went down there, wasn't on display, was hiding in their storage area but got one. Batteries alone are are around £110 and it's the best erbauer combi too.

It's NOT at screwfix oddly, it's specific to B&Q/Tradepoint.

The box is chunky at ~60x19x35cm

Is that set good quality - comparable to DeWalt/Milwaukee?

Wouldn't know for sure, never used either.

From what I've heard you'll get the major features which can be competitive with such brand names and it's likely to be less refined in the minor ones. Trigger not as good, noisier. And you pay less for it.

One thing I can still see is that they are persisting with having their drills too far forward. All drills used to be that far forward when everyone was (and some cheaper models still are) using brushed motors because those motors were longer and hung off the back which balanced out.

But when Erbauer moved to brushless motors which removed the mass of the motor hanging off the back they didn't rebalance it despite multiple models since. So it's front heavy and with a small 2ah battery and a bit in there it will tip forward if you look at it funny. Ofc this kit has 5ah batteries which weigh it down like a 5ah battery but you can see that Dewalt/Milwaukee/Makita are better balanced all the time by pulling the entire top section further back over the grip to compensate for the loss of rear weight by the change to brushless motors.

Also triggers I can be sure about. I loved the smooth response of the trigger on a Bosch drill I had until it got plagued with a power cutting out bug that was never resolved. Erbauer triggers are savages that don't believe in low speed, they are very reluctant to do anything other than blast. Yes you technically can do low speeds but you should set the torque as if those speeds didn't exist.

Impossible to compare battery packs between brands but I had a look inside and it's the same Samsung 2000mah and 2500mah cells inside that everyone uses. Padded and vented and built like a brick as it should be.

The more B&Q/Screwfix (Kingfisher) creep up on the brand name features with their Erbauer range it seems the price also creeps up. However refinements aside you can't get that spec for anywhere near that money from DeWalt or Milwaukee.

Does anyone know how to leave a product review on Toolstation? Went to leave one for the first time earlier and can't for the life of me figure it out. Tried it logged out, logged in, incognito mode, products I've bought and haven't bought. No button to actually leave a review

Spec wise?

Off the top of my head I think it's via Trustpilot. I wanted to leave a review last month after some good customer service when I got a damaged package. Seem to recall there being a period while it was waiting to be approved so sounds like a third party review site. Sorry I can't remember properly and I'm not opening my emails, it's late :D

It's a similar brushless kit but yes it's lower spec and still costs more

2x 4ah va 5ah
65nm drill vs 120nm
170nm impact vs 160nm
100m charger vs 60m charger <- dewalt and milwaukee do have fast chargers but you'll get the "regular" one in a kit

Do Dewalt do a drill only kit with decent charger? I don't really need the impact driver but I feel like Im almost forced to have it to get a decent priced bundle.

Does anyone here have or used the Makita DSP600zj plunge saw? Highly likely to purchase later this year, as a hobbyist it'll do everything I need.

We have some flooring to lay where I might need to rip some long lengths, numerous floor to ceiling cabinets to make and also some bench seating too.

I built in cabinets in the lounge alcoves and resorted to B&Q ripping the longest cuts for me and using a circular saw for the remainder by clamping a longer guide.

I'll need convenience and consistency.

What is their policy on battery supply when they drop the product line? There are many, many, very good power tools on the market that live or die (literally) on the future availability of batteries. If you buy Erbauer today I’m sure they’re great, and they’re great until you cannot get a battery for it.

And if you watch any of the “proper” reviews online (I’m thinking Project Farm and VGC Construction) the same brands tend to come out on top every time. Fundamentally, spending a few pounds more on an Ecosystem brand (Mikita, Bosch, DeWalt, Milwaukee, Ryobi) gets you tools that last and battery security.

Im 100% certain that your Erbauer drill is amazing and I’m equally certain that once it goes EOL at B&Q you’ll never get a battery for it.

That project farm bloke is awesome. The VGC lad is dreadful though, wouldn’t bother with him.

Anyway, Dewalt changed their entire battery platform a while back. Still see loads of people with their older tools. Hilti have use recently pulled an apple move and changed their batteries completely and done away with the 12/36v platform - the tools are the EXACT same but have a different section for the battery to slide into. Even going as far as to put the price of the older ones up significantly over the new platform.

So wouldn’t be certain that others like Milwaukee/Mikita/festool etc won’t completely redo their design in order to sell new tools as well.

Metabo who‘ve recently been bought over are now basically the same as hikoki (which was Hitachi until a few years ago). Both have recently joined CAS which is a great idea but it’s never going to work as there isn’t anyone in the system thats is direct competition with each other.

When did dewalt last change? I expect it’s when they moved from Nicad to lithium. That was years ago and pretty much everyone was in the same boat.

I’ve had their tools for about 8 years and the batteries are still the same. I know some manufacturers are moving the pouch cells from cylindrical types but the dewalt ones still fit.

Even their 54V batteries fit their 18v tools (but as you’d expect an 18v doesn’t work in a 54v tool).
