Power Tools & General Tools Recommendations & Advice

Can anyone recommend a masonry drill bit set?

I'm looking for a sensibly sized set for my dad for christmas. He inherited a load of wood bits from my grandfather (who was a joiner) and served his apprenticeship in engineering, so he doesn't need wood/metal bits.

The trouble i'm having is most of the sets don't seem to come with a 7mm bit :s I'm not looking to spend a fortune, but would rather get something that will be used. I don't want a million piece set with bits you'll never use.

When I got some drill bits for myself, I got a 5 piece dewalt set and a separate 7mm bit - is this the best way to go?

Something like

Screw fix do single bosch masonry SDS bits - I bought a little single SDS ~5mm one. IIRC it was about £3.. worked perfectly.

Since I got my Stanley Fatmax twin battery drill for £79 at Homebase they have had another sale which is still on so I now have all these.- - Looked online again today and some out of stock items are back in stock so ordered a Torch - Might ask wife to treat me to a bare bones drill so will have one in house as well.

I now have two 18v 2.0 amp and one 18v 4amp batteries.

Absolutely faultless so far and the battery life is incredible.

I have binned two battery drills and two jig saws and gained some power tools I have always wanted - whether I will use them all needs to be seen

This Jig Saw is only mains one I have bought - all rest are 18v

Which kit did you get?

I ordered this last week for £269, expecting the order not to go through for the price:

It arrived on Monday though :D Next best price I could find was £345!

A lot of places sell the DCD995 with batteries for more than that, never mind getting the impact driver

Not sure, but you used to be able do a college course and pretty much make what you like. When i was at college doing cabinet making and upholstery there were people coming in doing night classes and retired people doing courses just so they could make stuff.

The course i was on the tutors were really cool and would let us go into the workshop on days off or on certain nights and make what we liked. I was a poor student at the time so didn't take full advantage of it. I'd love to go back now and make a load of oak furniture.

Made this solid oak tv cabinet at college for my mum. I think i paid around £40 for it to cover materials.

which college did you do the course at mark? I did it at Burnley college 86-88 when it was still city and guilds and not NVQ

Trevor brown was our furniture history teacher and technical drawing ( the old pen and paper ) he was in charge of the course when i went back in 96 to do carpentry and joinery. Bevan guy was in charge of upholstery. A guy called Viv powell ran the course when i was there.
What are you doing now? still working in wood?

Bevan guy was awesome, wish we had teachers like him at school, I might have actually learned something.

I left college and realised the qualifications I had were worthless really and most of the places around here were just minimum paid jobs in factories pushing wood through a machine all day, so ended up going into general joinery with my Dad. It was still a great experience and I learnt a lot, just wish I knew before starting how naive my vision of making one off furniture in a log cabin in the woods for masses of money was :o.

Did you make a go of cabinet making?

I went on to buckinghamshire college for 4 years after that, but i worked for REM in nelson for 11 years before i moved over here. I work in sheetmetal now though, but im setting up my workshop in my garage. Ive done a few jobs for friends snd im going to see where that leads.

In the market for a mitre saw something like a Makita LS1018L, value for money and quality of cut most important. £350 ish any ideas?

http://www.ffx.co.uk/tools/product/...293907 240V 10 Single Bevel Sliding Mitre Saw

I have had the 216mm blade version of this for around 4-5 years and it has been an excellent saw.

I'd be very interested to hear how you get on with that. I'm always envious when I see the massive garage workshops in the US. The cabinet you posted it another thread looked spot on.
