Power/Weight Thread

May as well enter this thread as I have the data.....

That FTP was done back in June. Really need to do another one soon when I'm rested enough. Now I have the Wattbike I have a more constant 'measuring tool'.

Working on bringing my weight down too. I was about 79 towards the end of last year :( I was about 74/73 at my peak last, year, that's the goal for this year.

My foray was short lived as I was enjoying sweet-spot work and my high intensity days were a little ambitious to begin with! I've actually eased off the gas a bit seeing as the last third of my year had pretty much zero periodisation. Coupled with lots of free time over winter & christmas I wanted to ride lots so needed to match intensity appropriately.
Have been meaning to reply to this but without really anything to contribute than "oh ok, anyone else?" I really hadn't bothered. I'm nowhere near disciplined enough!

Good numbers!
Agreed, very strong numbers Dan! Good work :)

Ages since I updated this. Still carrying some winter weight so numbers not the best.

Great numbers.
I'm the same height as you, I don't know your build obviously, but I'm sure you can get that weight down. You'd be nearly 5w/kg then surely?!

I really could do with doing another FTP test but I'm sort of waiting for a milder day - my garage is freezing, not the best conditions for a proper balls out test. I would estimate my ftp to be around 230W.

Anyway in the meantime, I've done enough riding to be able to part complete:

Thanks, I'm probably what you would call well built. Pretty broad shoulders etc. Hopefully I'll be back down to 80kg soon, not sure I can get a while lot lower than that wirhwit losing a lot of power

I was going to say a 12+% drop in total mass is pretty significant, especially if there isn't a lot to lose in the first place. I'm the same height as you and tend to hover around 78-80kg whilst still retaining a reasonable amount of build from my powerlifting/iron-banging days.

From what I've read whilst perhaps not being your lightest is at the detriment to your w/kg slightly, generally other areas including overall performance, recovery, well-being and motivation all benefit. The decrease in weight eventually being offset by lost power so it makes sense to sit where you're comfortable and performing well :)

Dropping X kilo's temporarily to boost an FTP result for bragging rights is all well and good if it's not used as the basis to train to when ultimately it's not your everyday optimum.

Yeah, I have been as light as 76kg in the past, but that was when I was only running. I know I've picked up a fair amount of muscle since then so not sure that would be realistic now. I was 91 on New year's Day this year :o

Not sure if it's having done more than 3 or 4 years cycling now, or just having had a massive January but I've noticed this year my legs are a very different shape already. Way more defined quads etc which is a bit weird.

Guess I can join this thread with my humble stats from having a power meter for the last month or so...

I’m taller than you both but when I dropped to 76-77kg for a climbing race I felt it hurt me more than when I was 79-80kg and could boss it everywhere.

Composition and fat distribution can change quite a bit based on macronutrient split and also exercise type. Could also be that your recruitment pattern has changed, or a combination of them all :) #gains

Yes but... mass :p at my peak of 'lifting' I was tipping 94KG, maintained 78kg for the majority of 2017, up a few kg as I came in to winter but that's ticking down again now with a moderate deficit.

No homo ... some homo (both contain homo) - I'm still lugging some of this around with me which I quickly learnt does little for performance on the bike :( but does make some kit fit quite nicely :D Around 85kg in most of these. I look very different considering my weight hasn't changed hugely since but I do hardly any consistent lifting. Pretty sure I'd started my transition to skinny cyclist as the absence of leg-hair is a giveaway!

Did 211w for 20 mins during The Hunted last night - will be interesting to see my proper FTP test in a week or so. 11 weeks until my multi day ride so lots of time to get fitter. I’ve also dropped about a kg by just riding and not eating Christmas cheese and Belgian beer :)

I’ve just done a 20 min test

I'm looking to hit 77/78kg this year. Christmas and the lack of outdoor rides have seen me put on maybe 1.5kg. I was 88kg last april.
