Powerhouse SFF project

Well, I would like an i7 860 but I think it's overkill for my needs. The sensible chip would be the i5 750.

I have a blu-ray/HD-DVD drive, Samsung F3, GTX260 that will go into it. Oh yeh I also have 4GB of 1600MHz Corsair dual channel DDR3 from my current AMD build.

Just need to sell this cpu and mainboard before I make my move.

sounds like a winner :) id say go i5 defo if you dont need an i7.
Which mobo you thinking of? the giga and the ECS (or whatever it is) get reviewed on monday i believe

now we just need this blasted case.

I found a piccie of the Gigabyte and I see what you say about the layout. It's to close to the GPU slot.

Are DFI a reliable brand?

I wont be overclocking and I dunno if I will even bother with an aftermarket cooler.

The psu I just bought is supposed to be really silent so I suppose I could spend £20 a silent cooler.

I have a nice 120mm Red fan in my Antec 300 whch is silent so I could rob that out of it.

I don't have a lot of pennies so need to sell my AMD stuff, but alas we have no case anyway! :p

What purpose are you going to be using the system for? my i5 750 is being reused but is overkill for my needs as i only really play games and listen to music.

The components going into my system are very similar to yours, what voltage is the Corsair rated at?

I will be upgrading from teh stock cooler as i want something quieter and with more cooling capability :p

The RAM? Think it's 1.65v could be wrong though!

I'll dig out the model number in a mo.

It will be used for some games, although I use my xbox/ps3 a lot to.

I encode a bit of video, not much tbh. Web browsing, printing photo's - I wanna learn photoshop/Gimp so may need the HP.

I have had the Q6600 and now this AMD 965, I don't wanna go back to dual core. I may wanna play arma 2 a little bit and may buy MoH on PC if it isn't nurffed.

the dfi is ok, its had a few troubles when pushed (dying flat out) but not many people have moaned really.

ill try a corsair h50 when the case comes but for now over summer i wont be using it so much so stock can do me.

and yeah the psu you got is whisper silent :D

ram im getting is 1.3v, i just thought itd suit it well being lower voltage, less stress. But i could do with 2x4gb sticks, like rocking horse poop though! (at a decent price)

1.65v is the maximum intel recommend due to the IMC on the i5s, you should be fine.

DFI are fine and i have heard very little about RMA/returns.

The stock fan for the 750 is not very good, i mounted mine with MX-2 as the stock paste is pretty bad and would hit around 70 under load, noise wasn't too good either.

Not sure what the largest source of noise in my case is, i presume its the S.Flex on my TRUE but is probably my hard drives or Graphics card.

I managed to sell my DDR2 for the same price i bought them for :)

Apparently my bank account is already tied to a paypal accounts so my £70 is stuck in there, i think its registered to an email account i no longer have access to so will have to send an email to paypal at some point.

welcome to my world!

have a scroll up, i mentioned a few. Unfortunatly we dont know what clearance the cooler will have in the case, so its a bit of a gamble at the moment!

Dimensions of q08:
227mm x 272mm x 345mm (W.H.D)

Dimensions of HX650:
150mm(W) x 86mm(H) x 150mm(L)

Taking the height would be Width of the q08 take away the Height of the HX650 i beilieve so 227-86mm=141mm but taking into account the distance of motherboard from side panel and side panel from powersupply it would probably end up being around 10mm or so, i'm doubt i am that far away from the actual height.

already done all this :D if it its 14cm then itd be nice! but im not so sure based on the pci slot/gfx card height

im seriously thinking of fitting custom water in there though :/

240 rad in the roof/drive bay (external dvd drive would be fine) small pump, bingo!

I'm gonna go for a humble low profile cooler.

The annoying thing is I have a Zalman 8700 cooler that I could use but there is no i5 bracket for it :/

im bored so heres another similar picture: (lol rotation in picasa)

yup, need the power :D (hence thread title!)

going small but not loosing any performance. as mentioned i could do with 8 gig of ram 'cus 4 is likely to make me cry at some points, but that can wait.

Nice!

I got an interview for a job on the 6th and if I get it I may treat myself to a i7860 instead if i5 750, I don't need the power lol but it will be my treat. :p

or I could put the £90 towards something else.

Also on the cooler front I think I've struck gold! in my homeserver is a zalman cooler which I think can take the zalman 1156 bracket. The cooler currently runs a socket 754 system lol, It will be so great if it can use the bracket, saves me £20-30 on a new cooler.
