** PRE-ORDER SPECIAL PRICE: OcUK ATI HD 6850 OC ONLY £89.99 Inc. VAT!! **

Mine arrived at 11am this morning - great service. Working away however so wont get to rip open the packaging and install till tomorrow night.

As I am switching from an nvidia 8800GT, anyone have advice on what procedure is best to follow to clean out these drivers/registry giblets and install the new drivers perchance?

Just uninstall the nv stuff from control panel, shutdown, swap cards, reboot - it will come up in VGA mode, install 12.1 cats or 12.2 previews and 12.1 cap3's and reboot and enjoy. Ignore all the "driver-sweeper/cleaner" hokum.

What are the cap3 things you are talking about? This is my first ATI card, swapping out from a 8800gt. I've got rid of my old drivers, installed new card, used the auto detect program that installed 12.1 drivers and some control center stuff and things like that. Anything else I need to do?

Saw one of these when helping my friend pick out parts for a new rig, although it was after he had already placed an order with OCUK. I suggested he calls up as it was late last night when he ordered and they might be able to help. He tells me the sales support team were very helpful and he managed to change the card over (from a 550ti). Nice one OCUK.

Dropped the cards in last night, everything at stock, 6777 in 3DMark11.

One thing I will say about the ASUS cards, their default fan profile is TERRIBLE. It is set very very aggressively. So even playing not so taxing games (like Dungeon Defenders, ~50% load on each GPU) the fan noise was something awful.

The default profile had something like 80% fan @ 60C... which is completely mental.

A quick test of the fan speeds and I found 38% to be the most acceptable to me, up to that point the GPU fan noise couldn't be heard over normal ambient system noise. 40% was just audible, 45% audible but not intrusive, and anything past that was just plain loud and annoying.

So I set my curve up to:

<45C = 20%
45-60C = 30%
60-80C = 38%
80-100C = 50%

Doing that the top card even when maxed out at 100% load (had a run through Crysis 2 for half an hour to warm it up) was sat at ~37% fan and 78C. The lower card runs a bit warmer as I'm using a mATX case and its really close to the central partition (I plan on putting a 120mm blowing slowly over both cards to feed them some fresh air), but even so that was sat on around 88C max and 42% fan speed.

With the new fan curve the cards run hotter (but well within limits) but are now nice and quiet even under the highest of loads. I'll attach the 120mm tonight and see how that effects the 2nd card temps, if I can bring it in line with the top card I'll be a happy bunny :D

Once I've got that set up I'll work on clocking the cards up as much as I can without having to up the volts (to keep them cool), I'm hoping I can get 6870 clocks (900/1050). :D
