So what's the deal with Microsoft not bundling an internet browser in the EU?

I know it's something to do with the European commission but how come Apple do the same thing and that's fine?

I think it's all a bit silly if you ask me! I'm guessing this has been ask several times before!

The reason IE isnt included in the EU version is because the Competition Commission ruled that including it was abuse of MS's dominant position in the market. Basically if the average Joe has IE he wont bother looking at "little guy" firefox and therefore mr firefox is unfairly squeezed out of the market.

Not sure if the ruling allows IE to just be bundled in the first MS update making it all a bit pointless anyway...

As i understand it, the E version is missing IE and the N version is missing IE and WMP. not sure why they needed to make the N, possibly same reason but in limited quantity to satisfy the commission.

It's stupid!

Who care's if firefox doesn't get a look in!? It's Microsoft's operating system and they should be able to do what they like in my opinion.

The option is there to download firefox or any number of other browser afterward so i don't see the problem. All this does is create confusion for the average computing consumer! If they don't know what firefox is now they aren't going to download it, they are going to download IE as that's what they usually use.

IE8 from what i have used has been great!

But how come Apple doesn't get the same treatment? I'm personally glad my Mac's have had Safari and iTunes (Much better running on a mac btw) came pre installed!

What are they going to do when FF becomes the majority browser? I have no doubt it eventually will...

There is about 4 other threads all with the EU/no IE browser topic. Let's not make another one :) stick to talking about OC selling this. If I'd known OcUK were getting this I would've ordered from here :(

Well considering they love shafting a corporation who funds most of their bent excursions through insane tax...............probably nothing.

We have a reached a day when you cant sell something you like. Something innoculous and that actually helps people :|

I wish microsoft would just pull out of europe along with intel and a few other key people. Give them a taste of a true monopoly from the people who will take over.

The average consumer won't install Windows themselves, they'll by a pre-built PC from an OEM with a browser already installed.

Apple don't have the 90% market share MS did with Windows, so I guess from the Commission's point of view what they do with OSX is irrelevant. Tying iPods users into using iTunes feels pretty anti-competitive though.

along with intel
Unlike Microsoft's bundling of IE with Windows, Intel's anti-competitive practices were pretty despicable. If true they deserve a good shafting.

So you're not planning on running Windows 7 on any kind of production machine then?
You're only going to run Win7 on test machines in a full test environment.
Because that is all your Technet licenses allow.

Don't care about what microsoft say - it only testing machines. But, likewise, I use it on all my production pc's and laptop's and got all fully license with activated on all vista ultimate 32/64 for over a year as it never expiries and it still let me updated all windows updates online exspecially service pack 2 and genuine checked on all my pc and it all accepted success. Why should I pay for each license on per pc ? No thanks microsoft. I stick to technet plus direct as I get renewal discount every year. Can have 100's softwares and operating system of my choice from technet plus rather than spend my £1000's on microsoft softwares/operating system on single pc per license. Technet plus direct subscription mean it up to my choice, not microsoft. I never purchase anything from microsoft ever again in worldwide shops or online, no matter if it was cheaper deal.

I had installed all vista ultimate 32/64 with all difference brand new product keys from technet plus direct and installed on all my family pc's and laptop's for a year now, as they all happy and it free !!! Never buy again. :)

erm if you're violating the terms of the license then you may as well just pirate it. Just because you can get updates and activate your machines doesn't make it right....

The way you are running them is in breach of the technet license. I'm not saying I particularly care what you chose to do but I'm just stating fact.

True, but would microsoft care ? I don't think so, as I know many of my friends and million peoples use pirate windows version because no-ones not going to pay microsoft ever again exspecially rip off vista version last time. I don't think microsoft can't do anything about it because they want me to carry on as a subscription customer, not to lose me out.

Technet subs are mainly intended for IT staff testing purposes. They may give you a full license, but if MS found you just using them for in service machines rather than test purposes the same rules apply as to cracked versions. Personally I wouldn't be talking about my piracy of £1000's of MS software on a public forum ;)

On topic, the pricing for Windows 7 Retail is a really good move by MS. Most irritating thing with Windows for modders is that you either have to buy OEM or get your pants pulled down by MS in the past for Retail. OEM means you have to call their center and convince them you aren't putting it on a second PC almost every time you do an upgrade. I got two copies of Home Premium Retail sorted one for £40 and one at £45. If i had missed that I would be happy at £70 for retail rather than saving a little for OEM.

I think Microsoft would care. Why would they not care about you ripping them off!!
