Pro Cycling Discussion 2016

Thomas gone down apparently now? Final lap taking everyone, people pushing too hard and losing out badly :( How far ahead is the leader from the chasing pack now, better chance of catching now with him on his own?

EDIT:- just said, 19 seconds so closer than I thought, surprised they aren't going after him yet.

I missed the crash as I had stepped away from the screen but it sounds horrendous. Hopefully there's some good news soon.

I did feel a bit sorry for Mara Abbot, having led for such a long time there was nothing she could do against Van Der Breggan.

She's in Intensive care and3 breaks in her back. I wish her a speedy recovery. Descent was ridiculous when nibali breaks his collarbone. Porte his shoulder blade and Henao his pelvis the previous day. Everyone involved should have stood up and made themselves heard as they obviously knew it was a dangerous descent just looking at it.

Intensive care and broken back? BBC reporting no serious injury:

Van Vleuten was taken to hospital where Dutch cycling officials and the International Cycling Union (UCI) - cycling's governing body - said she was conscious and talking.

It later released a statement saying the rider "continues to be under examination but apparently no serious medical problem".

I think she fractured a few vertebrae, hopefully nothing too serious. In addition to the collarbone, ribs and collapsed lung. Certainly not pleasant, but a lot better than I imagine most people were thinking as they saw the crash.

The descent was ridiculous though. A technical descent is one thing, and the course itself was quite interesting. But the massive 30cm gutters on the very edge of the road were a disaster. Really needed to be filled in or covered over. Shame, because people were even talking about the possibility of a Brasilian classic before all of this.
