Pro Cycling Thread 2023

Yeah, I've never really understood why this isn't tried more often on a sprint stage. Sprinters win because it's boiled down to who has the best 10 second power... (okay, and the best positioning and lead out perhaps) so change it to be who has the best 1 or 2 minute power. Unfortunately, they didn't get it quite right. I remember G doing it from 1km out a couple of years back though and he did get it right and won.

The parcours made it possible today - usually the pace is kept so high that attacking off the front is very hard if not impossible. Without that climb putting the sprinters on the limit then there is no chance that Honoré gets that gap.

I thought it was awesome that Pogacar and Thomas were willing to give it a go today though. Apparently tomorrow has a short climb near the finish but I doubt they’ll get the same freedom.

Making it good to watch that's for sure, good to see G going with Pog and making a go of it. Today's stage was fantastic at 60km as it all split up and then the finish!

Cav has been throwing up during the race and struggling. Hope he recovers later in the race so he can go for a sprint, else it will be a sorry end for his last Tour as one of his team mates is also ill and has pulled out already

Can someone explain to me the advantage of having all your team lead you out when your competition is sitting in with you as well. Vingegaard was there with all the UAE boys and Pogacar so what advantage does Pogacar get over Vingegaard?

They get to set the pace Pogi wants.

You would just think that relies quite heavily on the other guy not being quite as fit which in previous years hasn't been the case. I don't know if they were just testing Vingegaard yesterday. Its a bit of a shame he isn't quite "at the races" this year by the looks of it but I guess its too early to say. Pogi could run away with the tour if not.

This is probably the best thread for it. As someone who has no interest in the Pro side of cycling. Is the TdF show on Netflix worth watching?

Seems they've tried to make it into a more "general" interest show to attract a wider audience so i thought i might find it interesting around nutrition/doping etc, but if it's purely a highlights reel of racing then i think i'd just pass on it.

I am part way through it. Its interesting but its like the F1 version where they just make crap up and splice highlights from different stages/races together to drive their narrative no matter how accurate it is. I would suggest you will probably enjoy it more as a layman than if you followed the TdF religiously.

Pidcock clock 106kph on the descent of the Galibier yesterday. Madness. Think the fastest I have ever gone is about 75kph. No idea what it would be like decending on smooth open roads but 75kph felt quick.
