Pro Evolution 2011

The graphics are growing on me, they do have a more realistic feel to them.

The WENB patch is out tomorrow evening and that includes all EPL/La Liga/etc kits and team names and all league licences sorted out too, coupled with all the updates on the 12th from Konami it should sort all the rough edges out. Good stuff! :D

You do compare it to a different version of FIFA to what we're talking about though :p

There isn't an option to change everything completely manual, and good - that thing completely buggers FIFA up if you ask me. Having so many different options for manual, auto and semi-auto is just confusing, and what's the point of using any of them if you're just going to get caned online by someone on fully-auto? PES allows you to choose on the fly - if you need to do a manual pass, hold the trigger and do one. If you just want to knock the thing around, press the pass button. Plus, PES' passing isn't exactly "fully auto" anyway, it's more like FIFA's semi-auto.

I personally think all of those options in FIFA should be removed and it should be fully manual or similar to PES with a manual modifier. Allowing different assist levels in ranked matchmaking is absolutely insane.

Again - I did sate that and I also said that it just isn't enough of an improvement from PES 10. But obviously that depends if you liked PES 10 or not. And if you didn't like PES 10 but like PES 11 .. well something is wrong with you :p

So... you can't judge a game on a demo, yet you can say that PES 11 isn't enough of an improvement over 10?

Obvious troll is obvious. Go away.

What has a demo got to do with anything ....

Just because I think PES 11 isn't enough of an improvement over PES 10, it makes me a troll ?

Yeah sorry man, I don't want to argue about it but PES 10 was absolute garbage compared to this. It's a massive improvement, even the demo makes that pretty clear. You insist you aren't a FIFA fanboy, but you're not exactly saying anything to back that up. FIFA 11 is good (on the consoles, in the console forum, hey!), but I genuinely think PES has the edge this year gameplay-wise.

You're entitled to your opinion - it's a close call this year so a lot of people are going to side with FIFA, and they're probably as right as I am for different reasons. But you've frequently made claims about PES that are factually inaccurate, such as it not having manual passing controls, and then used the factual inaccuracy as a basis for your argument as to why you think it isn't very good. Also as far as I can tell, you're a PC gamer, and as we've found out in this very thread, PES PC doesn't allow you to select the slower gameplay speed settings for some reason, and combined with the fact that PC FIFA is so different to the console versions, is it possible that PC PES is also different, and therefore warrants its own thread in the PC section? Whilst we talk about the console games at hand, having actually played them.

edit: Also, as far as I can tell, your main criticism of PES and your "basis for judging the quality of the AI" is the Be a pro/Become a legend modes. Personally, I don't even play these modes on either game because I think they're dull. I play the full "classic" game so to speak, and I think it's better than FIFA. The EA chaps have been doing the Be a pro thing longer than Konami, so it's only right that the AI and stuff is better in that mode. But using that as a basis for judging the AI in the normal mode is completely stupid because they're two completely different styles of game, and in normal gameplay controlling an entire team, the PES AI is easily on a par with FIFA's. Both have their problems, and I wouldn't really like to call out one as being better than the other. They're both solid - certainly as solid as any football game ever has been, which stands to reason as AI generally improves over time.

And as for Legendary and fully manual controls being really hard, no doo-doo, Sherlock! Legendary AI is just cheaty ultra-quick ping-pong passing, and combined with fully manual make-one-slip-up-and-you're-boned controls, I'm not surprised you apparently find it more challenging than Top Player on PES. And by more challenging I of course mean annoying, next to impossible to play for longer than 20 minutes due to getting heart palpitations courtesy of the frantic pace, and ridiculously unrealistic. Anyone can make next-to-impossible to defeat AI. But ignoring all of that, the guy you quoted actually said PES "feels more rewarding" when you string passes together. That's not the same as "is more difficult".

Difficult != Rewarding

Aye, it is valid points about me not having played Fifa 11 on the console, that's why I even said, and albeit I was doing the pes manual passing incorrectly when comparing Fifa to PES, it doesn't change anything.

Apart from the pc PES version not having the slower game speed setting, it will be the same gameplay. But maybe I should also try it on the console to check :D

And I have to say that I prefer the pc's Fifa 11 on the slower game speed, but I don't think that would be the case with PES.

But let's just ingnore the other game - you say you find PES 11 a massive difference comapared to PES 10, I trully don't. And I am genuinely surprised by people on here who didn't like PES 10, but are liking PES 11.

And I think that pretty much says it all about our different opinion on PES.

My mate bought Fifa last week and I bought PES today, have played about 7-8 games on each and played the previous versions plenty.

Fifa feels more fluid when stringing moves as previously mentioned, but PES is just more fun damnit! The suspense mentioned above really does add to the whole experience especially if playing locally with a friend, sometimes your player does do the odd thing when the ball is at his feet but the new passing system certainly adds more freedom and the AI will run 7/10 times, but admittedly I don't fiddle with strategies much.

I have always preferred PES to Fifa, for me I think its due to not being a football fan so it does just come down to which is more fun for me and thats PES.

Also, its not much different from the demo, certain controls are 'tightened' a little bit but not a huge difference.

Ah nice, good of them to release us something even though its not quite finished yet.

That plus the transfer update will certainly help tidy the game up a lot for me!

Can we do a quick straw pole of which version of the game you have, if you are based in the UK? Look on the spine of the dvd case and also on the back page of the manual. Post what you BLES number is and where you bought the game from.

Mine is BLES-01020 bought in Asda.

Apparently there are two versions being sold in the UK which has implications for option files compatability. I gather the guys who make these files intend to support both but it would be nice to see what the version spread is on here.

Is there any noticeable difference(s) between both versions?

There is no difference in the game as far as I know, it only affects which options files can be used. There was a similar issue last year but I think the whole of the UK was on the same version. It seems now there are two in circulation.

Edit: It seems that BLES-01020 is the version the vast majority of the UK will have. The 01021 version should only be for Scandinavia but it looks like some copies of this version also got into the UK. It remains to be seen if the likes of WENB will maintain both option files when the official UK version looks like it should be 01020.

Is there any way to practice penalties? I cant seem to find anything in the training mode for it :(

Training > Free Kicks > Roll the ball into the penalty area and press X/A :)

Also, edit: Having played a few more games, I am liking it more and more, the gameplay just feels so much more involving than FIFA, and the player AI is leaps ahead. I have the Option File setup now too and it tidies the game up nicely, come Tuesday with all the extra Konami adjustments it will be even better! :D

More good news, all the visual edits you do (including the WENB option files etc) transfer online, so you have updated kits and boots playing online as well as off! :D Not sure if it was like that in previous PES games.

I'm still very much enjoying it, its much more rewarding than playing FIFA 11 at least, no question about it. Which is a shame really, I was hoping it would suck so I wouldn't be torn between the two, but alas, it's excellent :(

Can anyone tell me if the AI players off the ball actually makes runs? In the demo it was pretty infuriating to pass to the LB and then run up the wing watching your entire team just stand there hardly moving. Also, are the running and dribbling animations improved? They really were terrible in the demo and it's like ps3ud0 said above, the ball kind of jumps up and down when you're dribbling and the player moves as if there is too much friction, hopefully that has been smoothed out? Also, is the shooting power improved in any way? In the demo I found anything more than a very quick tap to go flying into the stands.
