You can get the couble barrelled foot pumps which pump air a lot faster . . . Should be able to get more pressure that way.

Not necessarily. They pump up tyres faster because they move more air. However unless the foot lever is longer, you more effort to get high pressures.
Even a hand held bike pump would probably get more pressure than a foot pump. It's all to do with cylinder diameter and stroke length.

The problem is, we have to pump it up manually, there are no electrical devices or chemical reactions aloud :( .

On the knowing how far it goes part, we are going to fire it across our school field. :D

Google for cycle track pump -as I originally suggested.

well so far I've only been firing it at 10psi into my hedge, and i did it just now and realized its dark, so no vids till tomorrow, and also I've lost the ball till tomorrow when it is light again :) Also i will probably take it out to the back of the woods, got some big fields so im sure the farmer won't mind

ooo and also, i pumped it to 50psi, and left it for 2 and a bit hours, came back and it was at 40psi, so not bad for hand turned bolts :)

Jonny: is that similar to the infamous potato cannon?

What's your ignition?
It's a bit more ghetto than the ones made from plumbing pipe. Ignition is a Zippo lighter held to the hole in the side down near the bottom ;)

Nippledude, I take it you've got a tyre valve on there somewhere so you can pump it up. Can you put an electic pump on there? Mine goes up to 250 psi which is a bit higher than you can do by hand. Was about £15 from Halfords I think.

Edit: oops read the bit about no electric stuff alowd :(

Cant you use some sort of electronic valve to trigger it?

then you could have a long cable.. flick a switch and bang!

...he comes back with an air tank which are used on airliners for storing emergency air, they are rated at 1000psi,

We were only running at about 6 bar, but could fire our ball 200 yards up a hill, at about 45 degree angle. But we were using a £400 fast acting open-close valve to fire the thing.

6 bar is about 90psi - so your running on a similar pressure,

you could go up to nearly 70bar (~1000psi)

I have 2 scuba diving tanks next to me rated to (and containing air) at 232 bar (~3300 psi). Party at Paddys house ! :D

We need to see videos of this

will get them shortly, as in tomorrow, hmm i figured that the tank is actually rated to 3000psi, i worked that out by reading it on the side of the can  lol

The man is a genius :p

Well solong as you get a decent valve and use a spanner to tighten everything you should get some large psi aswell as no back firing. I'd have thought the more you crank up the pressure on 'hand tight' nuts will put strain on it and it'll leak air out the nuts, whilst firing...but then I could be completely wrong...never made a golfball canon, or any air canons.

EDIT: waiting for the videos too.

Remember, when over 100psi, PTFE tape in the threads will help.

I've managed to get some of those 2litre lemonade bottles over 150psi with a homemade car valve lid... I could launch the bottle a fair few metres in the air, with water as a propellant. :) I should try firing the lid one time maybe, and see how far it goes.

videos :)

only of how it works, and a blank fire at 30psi, so you still have no idea of how far it goes, will get one of them later on today, still need to find the golf ball though
