Project managers

Of course its to stereotype all PMs, nero's consistent bashing of them and claiming that anyone who defends them must be a PM kinda points towards him thinking all PMs are ****s.

I've been given an 70 day estimate for what is an SQL SELECT COUNT(*) FROM X in a shell script. The regional team did it in 1/2 a day.

Obviously the example above shows a complete lack of understanding from those concerned (including their management).

Sometimes things like this come down to bad requirements though, we have problems like this when having to pass work off to the 'Outsourced IT Company'.

Fortunately I work for the business, within the business and actually speak face to face with my clients so generally don't have this issue :).

This thread is for those that have had bad experiences with project managers, not to stereotype all pm's in existance otherwise I wouldnt even be in here.

Hmmm...

Projects Managers, Yep, just about the most irratating form of 'human' life.

Why are they unable to get it through their thick skulls that a developer cannot predict the fricking future

nero120 said:
because no sane human would seek to defend them. They're worse than tax men.

The OP doesn't really communicate the gollum-like loathsome quality that all PMs posses. Snivelling little creatures.

Hehe and that's only from his first few posts in this thread. :p

Clearly if you read the thread properly you would know that is not the case, re-read, understand his position whether you agree with it or not and instead of result to petty bickering and factless insinuations just take note that he is ranting (this has been said many times now, I mean come on...) This thread isn't serious business (pic here), its to let off steam from any *bad* experiences you've had. If you want to say how lovely and soft pm's are, make a different thread about it, you can justify all you like that pm's aren't all bad, we already know the obvious. Its not requried information.

you cant defend the pm's he has had experience with as you have only had one example from him.

On a side note - the guy playing in the saxophone shop above me really cant play the "happy birthday" song...

i can comment on anything that the OP has decided to put in this thread or on this forum.
a rant is a rant, generally people rant then realise they are talking crap and get over it. the OP hasnt got over it, just gone on and on, which has lead people to believe that he is more than just ranting but has a grudge against PMs.

As for reading this thread, maybe you should do the same, a couple of posts above you shows just how many comments the OP made in a very short period of time.
most of the OPs comments have something untoward regarding a PM in it :p

its a anti pm thread. it would contain more than 1 negative post on it, whether its from the op or not. He even asks people in the op to post their bad experiences.

I'm giving up.

Actually you're slightly incorrect. I only claimed people were PMs who were attacking ME and making character judgements based on this RANT thread. I didn't attack people who 'defended' PMs.

It's a rant, I really cannot see how anyone here could not take it slightly tongue in cheek - did you leave your sense of humours in your spreadsheets?! ;)

So if anyone would like to know how this little story ended, I finished the task today and let the PM know, and I was met with the reply "Oh, the client have changed their minds so don't do anymore work on it".... I wasn't at all surprised!

The good news is I'm off that project and back of my MOSS rebuild project. Nero is happy once more! :)

If they haven't figured it out yet, no amount of reasoned explanation will help them! Perhaps we should just be thankful that they are not PMs...?

I don't understand how anybody could be happy within a country mile of SharePoint. Yuck!

because the people that recruited them haven't got a clue...

That's as bad a stereotype as the one that was posted earlier about people in the Public Sector being less competent.

The people that recruited me knew their onions!

Outside of any technical areas (and 1st line support people don't count as technical they fall into office admin staff!) there is a tendency for the Public Sector to collect a lot of dead wood but this is from my experience rather than falling into yet another sterotype.

But that has been the problem from the start of this thread, as soon as anyone asked for any extra information, reasoning or explanation for your comments/thoughts you start hiding behind the excuse that this is a 'rant' thread and you don't need to say anything.

Yes by all means bitch away, throw a hissy fit and call certain people/roles whatever you want but please dont don't act that you know more or are better than these people you are putting down unless you want to enter into a real discussion backed up by facts and real life experience, none of which you choose to share.

Movistar, the only saving grace is knowing that the PM was probably ranting as much as the OP, just back in the other direction:

"What on earth is wrong with these poncy jumped up developers, all i ask for is a reasonable time for completion, get given some sarky comment, ask for something a bit more detailed and get a funny look like im the one with the problem!.

****ing developers, will get him off my project ASAP"

no doubt the PM had the last laugh hehe

Poor old PMs.

All they are trying to do is define and deliver a one-off piece of work to fixed corporate standards within a fixed budget and to a defined timescale.

If it is a software project they have often to deal with a load of perfectionist prima donnas full of the sense of their own self importance and utterly convinced they are artists and not engineers - hence above such issues as planning money and timescales.

Herding cats and nailing jelly to the ceiling (simultaneously) is easy by comparison.
