Project Money Pit

Is it wrong that in my eyes the koop's best styling cue is the body-coloured band that runs from the door across the dash and to the opposite door?

A lot of reviews praised this part of the interior, quite retro but modern at the same time. The interior is lovely, you honestly wouldn't believe you were sitting inside a car made by the people that brought us the Panda :D

Done anythig more to the Supra recently or are you still infatuated with your new Swedish plaything? :D
Nothing, I'm on shaky ground with it because it's parked on my neighbours drive, his son has just bought a car and something's got to give. It doesn't fit in the garage, we have the Mondeo, 200SX and Volvo outside and my 205 needs to be put in the garage too..... so I might just say sod it and bin the thing because I don't have the time to do it - especially with this spiteful weather that seems to be in no rush to leave us.

T5 transplant? Interesting!

Talking of Sweden, one thing that I'm really trying to get out of my head is the idea of an engine transplant. The coupe's weakest link is the engine, though when it's running it's a great unit. Let's see, we want 5 cylinders, turbocharged, bombproof, very, very tuneable. Any ideas? ;)

Apparantly the T5's 'box will comfortably take 500+ lb/ft...

Is the 20v a lengthened 16v? if so, fit one and Go mad...its an Integrale lump after all...

...How about an Alfa V6? Can be picked up for peanuts...Fit two sets of Triumph 955i Throttle bodies and a turbo... ;)

Hell, just the TBs...On a 3 litre with a good exhaust and a bit of head work it would be a flier...

They're big on the Alfa lump in South Africa and there are a huge amount of trick bits for them...Stroker kits, bore kits, uberstrong internals...

They are distant cousins from what I have read, with not a huge amount in common.

That would be quite special, it fits in the GTV after all which is no bigger

Wow, you don't hang around do you!

I love Coupes, think they look amazing (especially the Portofino blue ones)

Keep us updated with your progress.

Great thread Dogbreath. Really like these type of threads where people get their hands dirty.

Just makes me wish I had some money and a nice pile of 'upgrades' waiting to be fitted :(

Looking forward to seeing how you get on :)

In spite of the fact that it is over 15 years old, the Glenwood Alfa is still a magnificent racing machine. The 3 litre V6 motor features a stock standard crankshaft, but pistons are by the UK's famous Cosworth company, while the con-rods come from Carillo in the USA. The power comes from twin Mitsubishi turbos which, at 1 bar, push out 320 hp at the rear wheels, or 480 hp at the flywheel. At 1,3 bar, the car becomes virtually uncontrollable, with a staggering 400 hp being achieved at the rear wheel!

Dawie De Villier is the name you want to search for...

I've just took the cylinder head off my 8000rpm screamer today (civic vti).

Was only running on 3 cylinders.

Looked like someone had took a bite out of one of the exhaust valves.

Not looking forward to putting it back together one little bit!

And I thought I had it tough!

:D Must be a new craze. My 1.1 Fiesta did that. Happened to do it on the way to Loughborough Uni (180miles away). Driving along motorways for the return journey was not funny.

Imagine something which at its very peak, when it was created, managed ~50hp (I think it was around that).

Then remove a cyclinder (others were giving 180-200 psi, this one was giving 32 )
Slow wasn't the word.

With three people in it, it took 45s to get to 60.
It then took ~20 seconds to go 60-70..
In the head (notice the chunk missing at the left of the valve).

Perfect reasoning! :D

As much as I love the sound of a 5-pot being cained, the Alfa V6 is such a peach. Light, responsive, tractable, sexual sound...It even looks great!

I've only ever driven a stock one before (164?) but I'd love to see a 3.0 (or 3.7 ;)) with TBs (crossover fannymould?) and a nice tuned-length exhaust...

My god that looks... amazing

Not liking the wheels...And after seeing BO's pics, the fact that they can't be lowered much is a bit offputting...

Dogbreath...if an engine swap is on the cards, why not stick it behind the seats?

Would really love to have deep enough pockets to own one of these :(

I don't think you need huge pockets unless you have use a dealer for everything. It's going to cost more than the average Fiesta for sure, but just like the Elise thread showed, you can run cars on a budget if you are prepeared to get stuck in and do some of the work yourself. If you can do without the turbo, the normaly aspirated 20v's are actualy quite reliable.

He says it as if its all so simple.
Not at all. Even 'bolt-in' engine swaps are never really simple. I am under no illusion otherwise.

My point was that if he were to go to the lengths of swapping an engine, why not take that little extra step and put the engine back there?

There are a few people on here who have genuine mechanical ability and in cases like this, I just like to provide creative prods to try and push someone to go that little bit further if it is within their capability.

Other than working out how to arrange the gear selection (cable if you can...), the difficulty level involved in such a conversion isn't a million miles away from putting a different engine in the front of the car.

The Fiat Koop along with the Alfa GTV should have been RWD from the factory. Taking an entire engine/box/suspension setup from a FWD car and putting it behind the seats is probably the easiest way of making a FWD car RWD.

Does the 164 have a detachable front subframe?
