Project 'sillyteg'

Drexel, you'll be amazed how quickly you can get the engine and box out.

If there are two things i can offer advice on :

1) the gear linkage shaft; a pin hold this in place. It needs to be punched out, and one of the air con compressor mounting bolts is the perfect size for it.

2) Splitting the bottom ball joints.
Sooo easy. Thats not too clear, but if you jack the bottome of the hub up, put a spanner in sideways between the ball joint and the hub, then let the jack down the force of the spring splits the ball joint. Saved me fannying around with ball joint splitters.

Silly question...why does everyone that gets new parts have a wood panel floor? Both Tim and Drexel do, and I'm sure others do as well. :p

Interesting to see how this goes...both the progress and when it's done. :D

Pffft, call yourself a petrolhead? Everybody knows that Rule 26b subsection 5a of the car modifying lawbook states:

When posting the obligitory aftermarket parts pictures on internet forums, said parts must be displayed against background consiting of a laminate/wood flooring, and such flooring must be beech in colour *

*Exceptions to this rule apply to those in the USA, where said parts must be displayed on a garishly tiled kitchen floor.

I do have a wooden floor...but I don't do a great deal of work on cars...not modifying anyway, so no new bits...so I must have glossed over that section of the rule book. :p

Canne believe you needed to ask :p

go back and read it again!

Now away with you!!! :p

The turbo I have bought is a genuine Garrett unit from a reputable seller, not turboXS/ss-autochrome/generic ebay crap.

TD series are made by Mitsubishi, T3 etc are made by Garrett (and clones).

Depending on spec, a T3/T04 hybrid has considerably more power potential than TD04 or a TD05. IIRC a TD05 is at it's limit at around 350bhp, in the right 'trim'a T04 can flow for 450bhp+....

That does depend on which compressor wheel is being used. The TD05-16G on an Impreza will reach around 350bhp, however, fit the 20G compressor from the TD06 and 400+ with decent response is available.

Right, sorry Jonny, I got impatient, I've ordered everything now :o

Everything is ordered now including a nice shiny Garrett T3/T04. A couple of bits have arrived, but eveything else is coming from the states so should be here next week hopefully. Turns out the catch can I ordered is coming from China, despite being advertised as being in the UK, so it'll be a week or so before that arrives

Here's what I have now:

Engine Mount Inserts:

Boost Gauge (didn't think I would be needing one of these again :D )

I know, not very exciting, the intersting parts should be here towards the end of next week ;)

I hope your prepared for the harshness of those energy suspension mounts, they rattle the dash like mad.

I fitted them to my teg a few weeks back and an hour later i was removing them........ :p

My car is loud, rattley, noisy, harsh and uncomfortable anyway so a bit more NVH isn't going to bother me ;)

Hey DreXeL, I was looking at some of those Autogauges myself for my A-pillar mounts - don't suppose you'd know if the trim rings come off do you?

More of an Autometer man myself though but haven't seen any up for grabs for a while.

Just I'd prefer to spray them black than OTT silver :)

Great project BTW - looking forward to keeping tabs on this :)

I'm not sure TBH, never tried it. I guess they will probably pop off somehow, but it would probably leave some nasty adhesive behind.

Bit of an update, I wipped the sump off and removed the windage tray on the new engine today, and from what I can see without pulling the engine apart everything looks spot-on

I've got my engine 95% ready to pull now, so hopefully it'll be out tomorrow morning. I know it seems like slow going, but bear in mind I only get a few hours each morning, before I go to work in the afternoon till 10pm, so working on it after work isn't an option either.

Another arrival from the US today, my oil-line kit:

I'm tracking everything else and most of it is in the country now, although some of them are awaiting customs charges :(

Engine is out :D

As neil-ste said, it's actually pretty easy and came out dead quick one everything was disconnected, which is nice compared to the absolute PITA that was the rex's engine.....

I'll make a start on stripping it down tomorrow. In the mean time, some more parts have arrived. And this time they are SHINY!!!!!!1111one1

Lovely Tial 38mm wastegate. I actually have an urge to lick this.

what exactly did you buy new then, just cylinder block + internals ?

so you've got to transfer head + ancillaries from the old engine to the new ?
