Project 'sillyteg'

OK, A few pics of it's current status.

Engine almost finished and ready to fire up:

Turbo is a tight squeeze with the rad in place (I know, the air filter isn't in an ideal place, but there is literally nowhere else for it to go, I'll be putting a cold air feed to it though)

Oil Filter relocated:

Crankcase breather catchcan fitted:

Modified downpipe bolted up (ignore the jack, it was just there to hold it in place whilst I bolted it up):

Intercooler pipework fitted:

Jobs still left to do (in no particular order):

- Fit exhaust system.
- Route wastegate dumptube.
- Get BOV flange welded onto charge pipe.
- Install Boost Guage.
- Refit front strutbrace.
- Modify and refit bumper.
- Refit headlights, grille and bonnet.
- Tidy up underbonnet wiring and pipes etc and clean engine up.
- Go for tuning session.

Not much really, I'm looking to get it mapped weds/thurs.

No way to relocate the expansion tank and fit the induction there? Thats a terrible place for that filter..

You're right, the air filter is in a bad position, but it was merely a case of that being the only place it will fit. Yes, if I could move the expansion tank it would fit nicely in that corner, the problem is there is nowhere for the expansion tank to go :(

I may look into getting a smaller expansion tank and sqeezing it in somewhere. Either way that probably won't be the filter's final position, but it will do to get me running for now.

The yanks don't even bother with a filter, they just run with a mesh over the turbo inlet........

Drag or street cars?

In answer to my earlier question about MOT failure, I imagine emissions might prove something of a stumbling block without 'connections'.

Looks fantastic, can't wait to see some videos !

If you're going to runthat filter there then surely fabricate some sort of heatsheild from bent aluminium then get the cold air feed pointing towards it.

whats under the airfilter? couldnt it be routed down somehow?

also it looks small for a turbo setup...?

It can't go downwards, below the filter is intercooler piping and the bell-housing.

It's plenty big, but it's the one from my old N/A setup so is quite dirty. It's only temporary.

Anyway.......

IT'S ALIVE!!!!!!!! ALIVE!!!!!!!!

:D :D :D

I filled the engine with oil and coolant, then pulled the ECU fuse to crank it over a few time to get the oil pressure up. It took a fair few cranks, then the oil light went out, thus showing that I had built up some oil pressure. So I put the ECU fuse back in, turned it over and.............nothing. Did it again..........nothing. In was just about to give up and start trouble shooting when I turned it over one last time and it burst into life :D

Then I heared a pretty nasty knocking sound. I **** myself, I thought that I had been sold a dodgy bottom end with big-end failure or something, but that didn't make sense as I had pulled the sump and had a good look at the crank and big-ends, and they all looked good. Then after a couple of minutes the knocking went away, and it now sounds sweet. I assume that it was knocking a bit because the oil still hadn't got up to pressure and all around the engine.

It sounds mental at the moment, due to a combination of quite a lumpy base-map and the fact that I don't have the exhaust fitted so it is just an open downpipe. It sounds like a drag car, and you can hear the turbo spinning :D

I'd love to be able to just run it without an exhaust ;)

I took a couple of vids on my phone, but the quality is **** I'm afraid so you can't really hear the sound properly. I was going to get some decent quality vids but the batteries were flat in my camera

Just after initial startup:

And after it had warmed up and settled a bit:

It sounds lumpier in those vids than it actually is. I'll try to get some better quality videos tomorrow.

There are a couple of little leaks to sort, but nothing major. The main thing is she's running :D
