Provisional World Cup Squad

walcott is a good decision if i'm being honest. defoe and bent aren't exactly world class and won't set the world cup alight, walcott could. Thought swp should have been in tho instead of jenas.

No Sean Wright Philips, No Darren Bent, and why Owen Hargreaves.

SWP has got the pace and skill, and Bent has banged in more goals in the Premiership than nearly any other English striker.

Pathetic

Yeah,Cole is fair enough, but Cambell : has Sven not seen him in the last 3 mths ?

Exactly. Sol needs games to get anywhere near full fitness and playing at any level near what is needed, and that isn't going to happen.

No, he is in the first 23, they havent named the stand bye players yet

I see, but being it's provisional he 'could' be dropped.

"It is a gamble, of course it is a gamble I can't deny that but it is a nice one," he said.

I'd agree with him, if (a very big if) Rooney and Owen where fit, but I don't think you can expect anything from a player who hasn't played 1st team football for his club.

Seems odd that SWP hasn't been picked, I know he hasn't started a great deal of games, but he can change games, and would have been a useful addition to the Squad

Only things im not too keen on is Hargreaves; would have preferred Nolan to go and surely Bent or Defoe should have gone in front of Walcott.
Picking Lennon ahead of SWP was a suprise but SWP has barely played and Lennon has played particuarly well over the last couple of months of the season.

He "could" be dropped but the only reason for dropping him would be if he gets injured; othewise he wouldnt have picked him in the first place. I expect Defoe will get called up if Rooney doesn't make it.

Thank god Shaun Wright-Phillips isn't in it and an improvement like Aaron Lennon is.

Glad to see Walcott in there too, it will be a great experience for him playing with players of that standard for a couple of weeks, but I don't think its a good idea to just name those 4 strikers.

Hargreaves should not be in there. Not a bad player, but he really isn't needed. I'd much sooner see another striker in the squad in his place, mainly Defoe.

I think so long as Owen is fit though, then that is a strong squad.

/EDIT - Looking at the whole squad now, I really like it other than the inclusion of Hargreaves instead of another proven striker..

I dont think the selection is that bad, but i am worried about the lack of proven strikers. I still question how effective crouch actually is, but having him, a possibly injured Owen and Walcott as the likey line-up for the first few matches is worrying.

Unless of course we defy the usual and play 4-5-1

I'm not reading too much into this squad.

I can't see any logic behind naming a 'provisional' squad other than to deliberately make some controversial selections in order to see how the media/public react before he has to name his 'real' squad.

Could easily have chucked out one of the useless midfielders - Jenas or Hargreaves and stuck another striker in the squad. Then Sven would have a bit more balance in the squad and would still let Walcott in.

Think its time David Dean (sp) was chucked out of the FA tbh,cos it stinks a bit when the untried prodigy he pledged a lot of money for is surprisingly included in a squad he should be nowhere near just yet.

They always name a provisional squad. The only reason why its called "provisional" so that they can make changes if someone gets injured.

I would be suprised if he had anything to do with it. Surely it would be in Arsenal's interest that he doesn't play; risk of injury, media coverage etc

Gayness, Campbell and Hargeaves

******* hell !!!
Might aswell have left three empty seats than take them.

What a strike force , a kid who hasn't played for 5 months, Owen who has managed about half an hour of football since new years eve, Rooney who will be at full fitness approximately 6 weeks after the final, and Crouch the amazing 6 foot 7 lad who can't head the ball.

Good exciting squad i reckon!!

Ok think Jenas is a bit lucky and certainly a huge surprise to see Theo in there - but like Sven said its a good gamble i reckon! He could come off the bench and with his pace cause nightmares for some old ageing defences!! :D
Lenon wont really play same as jenas & downing so not a huge deal

Shame Bent cant go
