Provisional World Cup Squad

Think its time David Dean (sp) was chucked out of the FA tbh,cos it stinks a bit when the untried prodigy he pledged a lot of money for is surprisingly included in a squad he should be nowhere near just yet.

Yep, every thing is David Dein's fault. Personally I blame the Iraq war on him...

I thought King was going to be fit in time for the World Cup? If he's fit, I think it's madness not to take him.

I'm happy with Jenas being in the squad. He's not going to set the world on fire,
but he's a tidy player and Spurs have missed him when he hasn't played.

With Rooney and Owen being doubtful, I would have definitely taken another striker in place of Hargreaves. Probably Bent since Defoe is way too one-dimensional for international football.

i think sven made a good point. Why bother taking king if he's not 100% gonna be fit? We have plenty of backup in defence and midfield so there's no point wasting a spot on someone who might not play and who isn't particularly better than any of the other defenders.

I guess he can't take a chance with too many injury/unfit players (Owen, Rooney, Cole, Campbell and even Terry has a knock)

chelsea has ruined it for swp...
Completely agree, this time last year there was all the talk of him taking Beckhams place in the starting 11, now he isn't even on stand by for the squad.

Most adventurous squad Erikssons ever named!! Apart from his love child Hargreves

If all that squad was 100% i'd be well happy with the mix of youth and experience but he's taking a massive gamble taking only 4 strikers with 1 about 90% certain to be crocked, one who hasnt played for 5 months (bar 30 mins) and whos game is about sharpness and Crouch whos never gonna bang the goals in.

Dont mind him taking Walcott he could be a useful secret weapon as the other sides wont know about him a la Owen in 98. If he's good enough he's old enough imo.

To be fair to Sven, Defoe, Bent, Beattie, Johnson etc aint ever gonna be top class international strikers but he should have taken 1 of them as backup at least.

Not liking the options up front at all :/

Defoe should definitely be in, and possibly even Bent too.

I'm not doubting Walcott will be a superb player, but I just cant see any justification in taking him, gamble or not. Nobody really knows if hes upto Premiership standard yet, let alone international.

Hes taking Defoe and Johnson as back ups

For when Rooney and Owen cant walk on the pitch presumably

i think defoe should be reserved...

darren bent has proved more of a goalscorer this season so he should be looked ahead of defoe.

theo must be good... arsene wenger knows exactly what a good player entails and arsenal wouldnt of paid that much for anybody.

i reckon he is going to pull out a few surprises when he plays for england. there is always someone that pops up from a world cup... maybe this can be theo's chance to show what he can do

Aye I think walcott could be the saviour of the world cup.

He has the speed and skill and I would imagine that Svens named him and is hoping that the experience of the rest of the team will rub off on him.

Plus not many of the other teams will have played against him. Just hope he can stand up when it counts.

Owen hargreaves though, does he ever do anything?

I think svens looked at our strike option without rooney and owen, and decided that we have a better chance of scoring with a 4-5-1, i agree with him personally.

It allows for much more flexibility, he could go for an attacking 5 such as...

downing cole lampard gerrard beckham

or throw in carrick / jenas to tidy it up a bit. Thats also allows for lennon to do some damage down the flank if downing or cole have a bad game.

Also remember that walcott can play on the right wing...

I personally believe that owen will be 100% fit, which means he can play up front with crouch on a 4-4-2, or go by himself with a 4-5-1.

I'm impressed with sven on this one, its a team with pace and power, taking risks rather than hoping defoe or bent can knock it up a notch, which poersonally i dont think they can. I do wish SWP was there but if he's not been playing, and by the sounds of it he's not even been playing well when he has got a game, then he doesn't deserve a spot.

But then again neither does campbell and he's still going....

Major risk upfront if owen/rooney don't make it or if either breaks down early in the Tournament, be interesting to see the Saints old boys together upfront! if everyone was definately going to be fit would be a nice squad but there not

owen will be alright...

why people are panicking i dont know.

rooney will be ready after the group games.

gives theo a good chance witht he group games.. because barring sweden, we should be pretty comfortable.

So let me see if i'm reading this correctly, for months in friendlies he's been tinkering around changing the whole side at half time.

Now he chooses to blood young players in with the old?

He already did that with SWP and Defoe. Defoe proved he can fill owens boots if injured and SWP does a better job than beckham now IMHO.

I honestly don't know why we didnt sack sven before the world cup.

sacking sven before the world cup... that would have worked a treat....

cant even appoint anyone while we have a manager, nevermind not having a manager.

even so rooney will be ready when we really need him.
