It wont matter because everyone will be using blu-ray :p Besides most other people will have a dvd player anyway.

by dvd film i ment blu-ray and basically any kind of video disk :)

but im sure no ones got a blu-ray dvd player yet. thats my point i made in my first post. the playback for that could be shocking, meaning the people who will buy the ps3 for blu ray playback will be more than likley dissapointed

Im sure it will look one hell of a lot better than dvds do anyway.

If you sent it back its not a launch console? first batch were the ones that scratched discs and had iffy playback.

Did depend on the DVD tho aswell, some were fine.

It was a launch as it was exchanged, not sent back.

I do. I have a DVD player but I use the 360 to play dvds as its just easier (seeing as my freeview box is the only thing plugged into my tv's scart connector and I don't have a switching box to hand).

When I had a PS2 (slimline) I watched a DVD on it and expected it to be poor after all the bad things I'd heard, but it was perfectly good to my eyes. Then again I wasn't watching on a 40" HDTV  ;)

I thought you were the cheapest person on the forums... you spent money on a slimline PS2 when you could have got a fullsize for cheaper.. and as for the 40" HDTV? :)

as above, anyone knows that ps2 through component with progressive is much morre suited toa 40" HDTV....

some of my mates only have a TV and a ps2 in their rooms, so without that they wouldnt be able to play DVD's... and they cba buying one when the ps2 does an adequate job...

I wanted a new one so slimline was the only choice :) I was amazed how tiny it was

The 40" HDTV comment was in reference to above posts slating the PS2's output because it didn't look so good on a huge LCD screen, which is hardly fair in my opinion :) 'Next-gen' consoles ought to output DVDs at HD resolutions (upscale)* but the PS2 is from a different era.

(* I realise the 360 doesn't actually do this)

I think the people who buy a console for DVD/HD-DVD/BluRay playback as a feature will be people who don't really care about quality. Sony obviously consider BluRay a major thing and are hoping for the PS3 to be a driving force. I hope(?) real players will be out before the PS3 otherwise BluRay will not impress people who care.

I've seen Xbox 360 DVD playback, and its abysmal. I've also seen PS2 DVD playback (having both consoles) and it was quite poor as well. A cheap £50 player offers significantly better quality, as does my PC. I think its fairly safe to say the PS3's BluRay playback will be poor as well.

However, people who use the PS3 as a primary player will not be that rich (in which case they may not have a HDTV, so it won't matter), or they don't have enough space - in which case a small TV is almost a certainty, or they just don't care about quality that much. Of course with Sony hyping BluRay, should the PS3 become the leading force for BluRay I suspect many people may end up disappointed.

I appear to have stated my point twice, I think I will be leaving now
