Had a ps3 for a few days now and am getting to grips with it,

The things i hear from sony fans and the things i am seeing are 2 completely different stories,

First of all i will point out that i did purchase it as a blu-ray player with the ability to play a few exclusives,

The first thing i noticed when i turned it on was how quiet it was, this was brilliant, after being used to my 360 sounding like a rocket i was impressed, i ran uncharted (basically tomb raider with a bloke in it) all was quiet but after about 5 mins the fans kicked in, by god they could drown out a 360 easily, it is far noisier than my 360 and to make it worse it makes this racket when upscaling dvd's, is this normal?

I was also told by a lot of ps3 fans that it was brilliant at streaming content from the pc, so i gave this a go, and from direct comparison with my 360 i can honestly say that the 360 is leap years ahead, the 360 upscales brilliantly whereas the ps3 alternative looks very blocky and pixelated in dark areas.

i bought a few games from the PSN store, pixeljunk monsters (surprisingly good but damn hard) and everyday shooter (surprisingly carp) the shop is probably on par with xbox live but it has nowhere near as much choice and i can see it becomming cluttered when more content becomes available,

So far it is looking like a huge noisey hot ps1, all i am doing with it is playing FF VII which isn't a bad thing at all :)

BUT... i did buy it to serve as a blu-ray player and when watching planet earth it is absolutely stunning, which makes my decision worthwhile :)

the only real problem i have with it at the moment is the noise level, and the rubbish sixaxis controller (will be fixed shortly)

When i am playing blu-ray it is barely audible, which is brilliant

I did want it for exclusive games though but just can't cope with the noise it makes, especially after hearing how much quiter than the 360 it is meant to be

i cant believe yours is actually loud, i cant hear it unless i literally put my head next to it. I struggle to hear it in a silent room at 2am with the tv on mute whilst sitting about 1-2 metres away from it. The ps3 is silent if the tv has even the slightest volume on

edit - where do you put your ps3? i read about some guy who put his in an enclosed space (like a cupboard or summit) and the fans did start kicking up some noise.

Mines whisper quiet tbh. And psn cluttered? how? its got sub menu's for everything. Ive used both quite abit the 360 and the PS3 and the noise the PS3 makes is ALWAYS a lot less then the 360. Take it back mate :p

I've been using my 40GB model for this evening and this evening alone - only just got around to installing my new purchase.
I've replaced the 40GB HD with a 320GB Scorpio - not that that should make any difference to the noise level.

On watching a DVD earlier the unit was near silent.
I don't as of yet have any Bluray disks - a couple will be arriving shortly, however I can't see those causing the unit and more noise.
For the rest of this evening the wife and I have been playing Ratchett & Clank and again I really would honestly say the machine has remained silent.

Ours site horizontal on the bottom shelf of a three-shelf glass table - plenty of ventilation all around it.

Mine is also silent when playing games for hours, if yours is still making a racket take it back just incase

I do get some fan noise from mine when it's playing a game or folding@home etc but it's no where near as loud as the fan noise I used to get from my 360. This is a UK 60GB model, my Japanese 20GB model was definately quieter though.

My 60gig PS3 is a lot quieter than my brand new replacement Benq drive with falcon chipset xbox360 when playing games. Sounds like the OP is just unlucky.......

I'd consider taking that back. I have a 40GB I got recently and I can never hear the fans, even after playing Uncharted for hours.

The only thing I can hear is the drive accessing sometimes, that's it.

hi

ive never had any loud fan noise while playing uncharted , but i sometimes get a bit of disc spinning noise in uncharted but only every now and then , but i thinks thats for loading something.

My 40gb is so silent even after a good session of Warhawk. I haven't tried upscaling a dvd yet but i will do tonight. :)

60Gb here, and the fans do become noticeable after 15mins of game playing or watching a blu-ray. I think noise levels are v.subjective however but there are lots of threads on ps3 fan noise levels on this and other forums.

Do people mean silent with or without TV sound on?

I can't hear mine at all with the sound on but without it it's definitely audible, nowhere near as loud as any of my Xbox 360's however.

Same, my 40Gb is very quiet and i can hear the fans going up a level after a few hours on it, but its still whisper quiet when it does and this is with TV sound off. Mine is under a coffee table on top of my Sky+ box (its off when the PS3 is on and vice versa).

Very surprising that Sony would let their console's original good points become negated.
By the way, apart from picture quality what else does the 360's PC streaming do better?
