PS3 or not?

I did not intend to start a flame war, I wanted to know if it is worth it or not. Thanks for the replies, I will go and pick one up when I am free as i do love choice I must admit (I am a spontaneous player and I tend to not stick at a game for ages, I like to play a bit of Game A, then some of Game X then perhaps a little bit of B!)

I have time now (just finished MSc and my proper job does not start for a month or two) and it pays amazingly, so I don't mind buying it. It's just will it be a nice black doorstop for me heh

I'd say go for it!

I was pretty much a PC only gamer until I got my PS3.
Even then, I got the PS3, as I fancied Motorstorm, and wanted a bluray player, and had the choice of getting a PS3, or the 8800GTX (which I originally saved the money for)

As far as I'm concerned I made the right decision. Only now am I looking to upgrade my card to 8800, and I've had 6 months or so use from the PS3, which has been well, well worth it.

I was also afraid at the time that it would just sit under the telly, unused, while I played mainly on the PC.

Not at all the case. In fact, I'd say I've been playing on the PS3 slightly more than the PC, though now I have the Orange Box, and COD4/Crysis etc on the way, I'm sure it'll shift back to more PC usage.

But yeah, I do use it a lot more than I thought I would.
It's keeping me skint, buying more and more games (I preferred the PS3 version of DiRT to the PC) Motorstorm was (and still is) great fun, and even when you don't game on it, bluray movies are just stunning, and worth the money alone!

So, that's from one PC diehard who was afraid the PS3 wouldn't get used, I'd say get one!

I wouldn't pay £18 for Blu-Ray's at the moment, so sign up to a rental service online and you can get them for free for the first 1-3 months depending on the offer you can get.

Or just buy your blurays elsewhere.
Many can be had £11-£13. Many are region free, so you can import them, making them cheaper too. I've bought a few from the Members Market/Ebay cheap, and some deals, like my recent purchase of the Spiderman Trilogy boxset on Bluray was "only" £32.89. £11 per film.

Why did you get one now, then? Wait, get the new pad, possibly a bigger hard drive and who knows what else they'll change - for CHEAPER, when MGS4 actually comes out.

The main reason.

I had one at launch and I used it for playing PS2 games upscaled, Motorstorm, downloadable stuff and watching videos on it :)

Possibly a bigger hard drive? You can update the drive very easily later on. I still have 30GB free and I have a lot of music on it and videos. The only time you really going to need a bigger hard drive is when the TV service comes out.

I also wanted it for Prologue, LittleBigPlanet Beta, PES, Uncharted, Ratchet, Everydayshooter and other things.

Yeah, if you have the funds, get the PS3, I have all 3 consoles as well, I don't play the PS3 anywhere near as much as the 360, but that doesn't mean I never use it... And things will get better..

Sounds like you just need a slight justification to warrant the purchase, the BR ability and a couple of the big titles is enough for that I think..

You blow hot and cold in regards to the PS3 - make up your mind !!

Oh - and I thought Heavenly Sword was a fantastic game.

I haven't read the rest of the thread yet but I need to respond.

He does not blow hot and cold. Nokkon, just like myself, have always said the PS3 is a fantastic piece of kit, it really is a great machine. It just doesn't have the games which is why in that other thread he was saying he couldn't recommend it.

You completely missed his point and quoted him out of context there.

Rather than appearing as pointless post, I'm just trying to explain to some XBOX360 fans who seem incapable of understanding why anybody would buy a PS3, let alone buy a PS3 as their only console. I honestly believe, that if I had an XBOX360 myself, I just wouldn't use it. It also doesn't help, that of all my mates, none of them are on their original console, and only one of them has only had one XBOX360 break down with the red lights, and only one, because he threw it in the bin, and got a PS3 instead. lol A bit extreme, but that's how annoyed he was with it.
Not at all, I've said that anyone wanting a large catalogue of games on the PS3 are best if they only own a PS3, in which case there are loads and loads of games, but other than DiRT, all of them perform better on the Xbox360.

Of course some people will enjoy the PS3 more, but many more do prefer the Xbox360. I bought all 3 consoles on launch anyway because I want the option to play whatever I want and I've always said, purely on console, the PS3 is the best of them (even though it's the only console I've had break this generation) because of Blu-Ray, WiFi, Card-Readers, Media playback, Linux etc..

I'm happy with all 3 of my consoles, but currently only 2 of them get use (the PS3 and Xbox360) and of those two I'd say I spend 20 hours on my Xbox360 to every 1 on my PS3, though that will change with Ratchet and Clank.

Well I'll try and put the thread back on course.

If you have the others, and can afford it, Get a PS3. I personally love the console. And a lot of the games out on it. Warhawk is the most fun I've had online on ANY console in a long time, Heavily Sword is great fun too. Not played Ninja Gaiden yet, As I finished it on Xbox, But I will be looking to play it sometime in the future, because it looks nice and refreshed.

Oh, And i watched BR 300 last night, And it's absolutely brilliant.

If you make sure you get the 60gb version, You also open up the entire PS2 back catalogue, Which is still having games released now. God of War 2 is still an amazing game, and I believe manhunt 2 may still be released soon?

I personally do not see the bad side to the PS3 that so many seem to find.

I've played it a lot, Whether it's been PS3 games, PS2 games or movies/Demos. It's not been on constantly, But it's hardly gathering dust.

Geez! I've opened up Pandora's Box!

If it means anything, I learned years ago that console loyalty goes out of the window and each platform ends up having must play exclusive games.

I bought the Wii for Zelda/Mario, Xbox 360 for the Media Center mainly and Halo 3, and looking like the PS3 for BluRay/MGS4 etc. From a consumer point of view it's not very economical having to splash £800 odd for all 3 consoles!

Thanks for that! What video formats does the PS3 support in its media centre?

not much.you'll need a pc and something like tversity to stream and convert formats like divx, xvid and so on to a format that the ps3 can work with. its meida capabilites in that respect are very poor. It does make a great bluray player but what are you buying the ps3 for, films or games?

Bit of both, MGS4 and having a Blu Ray player I guess as it stands, and the "smugness" of owning all current gen consoles.

"Somewhere" have a deal with the 60gb + 2 games + 2 BR titles for £350 (!) which is good

Tbh i think the OP should know ALL TOO WELL if the PS3 is for them or not.

After all the BS posted and typical bitchslapping that ALWAYS happens here please take time to understand that the PS3 biggest feature is still its multimedia, capabilities.

This includes wireless networking
Surfing the internet
PSP - PS3 connectivity & sharing
Blu Ray Movie Playback
Easy hard-drive Swapping

All main festures only available on the PS3 console.
This makes it more ideal to the livingroom enviroment too.

As a games platform we ALL SHOULD KNOW its still got a long way to go but the GAMES ARE COMING (insert applause here)
I suggest that it none of the strengths of the platform interest the OP then he SHOULD WAIT, particulary if hes looking more to games rather than multimedia as entertainment.

Its that simple...

it is a good deal, and if you plan to make use of the bluray player then in all seriousness, GET ONE. i bough mine for full whack, knowiung full well there werent any AAA games out in the near future. ive made extensive use of it as a bluray player and didnt regret it one bit:)

great games will be coming, but they arent quite here yet.

People can complain about converting films or it and so on. I use VisualHub on my Mac and it only costs me about a tenner. It converts movies really quickly and all I do is pop them on an SD card or memory stick and I can play it right away.

I already own a Xbox 360 Elite, Nintendo Wii and a decent gaming PC I keep up to date.

Is it worth my hassle getting a PS3? What "exclusive" games would it be worth? I'm tempted to just go down and buy one, but I fear it will end up never being switched on!
I'd agree with most on here that the PS3 has no killer title to buy it for on it's own, but there are a few decent exclusive titles that cumulatively could nudge you towards getting one:
Warhawk
Motorstorm
Heavenly Sword
Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection (Online patch imminent)
LocoRoco Cocoreccho
Super Stardust HD

Not a hugely expansive list granted, but enough to keep someone going for a while.
If you can easily afford it and a few of those games appeal to you, then there's no harm in picking up a PS3.
