PS3 or not?

Not at all, I've said that anyone wanting a large catalogue of games on the PS3 are best if they only own a PS3, in which case there are loads and loads of games, but other than DiRT, all of them perform better on the Xbox360.

Of course some people will enjoy the PS3 more, but many more do prefer the Xbox360. I bought all 3 consoles on launch anyway because I want the option to play whatever I want and I've always said, purely on console, the PS3 is the best of them (even though it's the only console I've had break this generation) because of Blu-Ray, WiFi, Card-Readers, Media playback, Linux etc..

I'm happy with all 3 of my consoles, but currently only 2 of them get use (the PS3 and Xbox360) and of those two I'd say I spend 20 hours on my Xbox360 to every 1 on my PS3, though that will change with Ratchet and Clank.

I wasn't trying to argue with anybody, just make my point about the PC.

If I didn't own a PC, the XBOX360 would probably look a lot more attractive to me as a games machine. I know there are a lot of people who own PCs and XBOX360s, but from my perspective, the games that I'd like to play on the XBOX, come out on the PC, so I'd rather play them on that. Much the same as XBOX and PS3 cross releases, XBOX owners often say they'd rather play the XBOX versions.

Again, from my perspective, the PS3 offers more, as it offers those exclusive titles that I couldn't play on my PC, or an XBOX, which is why waiting for, and purchasing a PS3 made more sense to me. There are more exclusive titles for that, than there are on the xbox (that don't come out for the PC too) There are also quite a few games that come out for the XBOX, that don't come out for the PC, but do for the PS3. Thus far, they may not have all been the best versions, but I do still get to play them. Newer titles, like the aforementioned Sega Rally and DiRT are very good on the PS3, whereas I was quite disappointed with Call of Duty 3. I've never played it on the XBOX, but I'd imagine it would have to be a hell of a lot better than that ;)

I was simply trying to explain why somebody would buy a PS3 as their only console, as I've read time and again in the forums "if you only want one console, get the XBOX" maybe that's true, if suffixed with "if you don't have a (gaming) PC"

Just my perspective on things.

Just as much as I'm looking forward to Ratchet and Clank and GT on the PS3, I'd have been gutted if I couldn't get Bioshock as well, but in my case, I don't need an XBOX to do that.

EDIT: after all, I was trying to reply to the OP ;) as I saw he had a PC, and was afraid he'd not use the PS3 much. Best advice I can give is to ignore any hardware specs, or people's opinions. If you fancy a bluray player, that's a +1... if you've never seen one, you'll be in for a pleasant surprise. Now go to an online shop, and browse through a list of PS3 games. If there are games that appeal to you, that you couldn't otherwise play on your current systems, then get one. If not, then don't bother. At the time, back in March/April, it was Motorstorm that I really wanted to play, and knew the only way I was going to get to do so, was if I bought a PS3. I also wanted to be sure that in the future, I'd be able to play Burnout Paradise and GTA IV on it, which I can. Then I made my decision, bit the bullet, and bought one. 6 months on, I'm still very glad it did, and i gets much more use than I ever thought it would.

http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/815/815721p3.html

it pointed out the good points gfx sound etc but pointed out the bad points quite well even the readers only gave it a 8.2 thats not low but its not good in my book

Not sure if you've tried this yet James.Miller. But my friend uses Nero 7 and Mediahome to play all his movies on his PS3. Here's a copy and paste from another site. It works really well, from what i've seen anyways :p

Works since 1.80fw.

PS3 AVI Transcoding On The Fly

Here are some quick instructions:

Turn your PS3 on and login, and leave it on your XMB

Run a file in Nero Showtime to unblock the firewall that pops up and ALLOW.
Run Nero MediaHome
On the left are a set of Icons.

Heres a quick setup:

SHARED DIRECTORIES > Click ADD SHARE and browse to a single shared directory for now, as it takes time to add the details, so dont go adding gazillions of media files for now.

OPTIONS: I left them at default for now, but they are self explanatory. Automatically start media home when pc is switched on is a good one to tick up, but leave it off for now till you get it going.

NETWORK: Click the box for your ethernet card on your PC. Leave port number and network name at default for now

DEVICES: Click UPnP/1.0 line and click ALLOW ACCESS box

TRANSCODING: Leave on auto detect as it will talk to the ps3 and see what it can and cant play and come up with a solutionafter a few seconds.

TV: Set up your tv card here

STATUS: Click this ICON and you will be able to see whats going on

then click START SERVER at the bottom, and you wait a few moments. Go back to PS3 and it should show the Nero Media Home Icon. Browse as normal for your video files.

At first if you have loads of files in your shared directories it can casue the ps3 playback to come back out to the XMB. Just give Media Home some time to update the directory listings, then it will be silky smooth.

Ive tested this n a decent PC for SD avi files only so far, and they work fine. You might have issues if you have an old pc, as the trancoding can take up resources.

some tips:
Only add one or two files max into a folder, as nero can take a while to index large amounts of files. You can also turn off the server and go to TOOLS - NERO SCOUT - INDEXING - FOLDERS and select the folders you want there. Then go back to the INDEXING tab and click INDEX NOW - this may take a while to do, if you have huge mounts of files, so as before just to get it working. When its done go to SHARED DIRECTORIES ICON in nero media home and select SHARE ALL CONTENT INDEXED BY NERO SCOUT

hey look, opinions are fine, but when they are obviously wrong - somebody will correct them. its up to that person how they react to being corrected. just look at his argument - HS being one of the best games around? seriously? we all know the 360 has some fantastic games, so why did he even bother to try and ruffle nokkon's feathers like when this (the state of the games) has been discussed so many times before. a little searching goes a long way. however, some people like to be bottle feed.

Oh I know he is wrong, but does that mean he should be a gimp, tool, kid?

Anyway I am behaving myself so will say no more other than these type of threads I have never understood, if you want a PS3 get one, if not then don't, no idea why random people on the net should make someone decide what to buy.

i tried it once before and had even less success than I did with tversity:p however things may well have improved since then. ill give it another bash though it isnt so important now i have a htpc sitting under the tv lol

I haven't read the rest of the thread yet but I need to respond.

He does not blow hot and cold. Nokkon, just like myself, have always said the PS3 is a fantastic piece of kit, it really is a great machine. It just doesn't have the games which is why in that other thread he was saying he couldn't recommend it.

You completely missed his point and quoted him out of context there.

The context is consistant between both threads and his point was not missed - it was completely and fully understood. In one he agrees with Kreeee that he can't recommend a PS3 right now and in this one hes basically says go for it - it's a great piece of kit. Two very different statements.

meh bioshock is better on the pc anyway lol

Now, where I do believe this, I'm one of those who prefers the mouse and keyboard for FPS, and believe the PC graphics are superior, not just for Bioshock, but for many other games, I didn't want to cause further controversy by stating that here ;) but it is true nonetheless, which is why I prefer these XBOX "exclusives" on the PC.

I mean this in a nice way, but since Nokkon got the power he has shifted opinion on the PS3 IMO, which in a way is good as he is a mod and should be un-biased, but you are right to have noticed it, and again I mean that with no offence, just an observation.

Not at all, the context was completely different.

In the original thread the potential buyer didn't own either the Xbox360 or PS3, so I recommended the Xbox360.
In this thread the owner did own an Xbox360, so I recommended getting the PS3 as well because it's a brilliant machine.

2 brilliant consoles, however the Xbox360 has the stronger games, so I would recommend that first every time at the moment. So no, the context WAS different.

Edit: Oh, and I've always said the PS3 is a great piece of kit.. this is the same argument I had with JBeck months ago, but even back then I was saying the PS3 is a great piece of kit, so to say I've only just started saying that (and even more so since I got 'power' is completely wrong).

Seems fair enough to me :)

Okay to keep it on track.....what two games am I picking? I can pick any 2

Only 2?

That would be a tuffy.

If you like racing games, then DiRT is a must, and Motorstorm is still great fun (and can probably be had cheaper by now)

Resistance: Fall of Man is far bette than I was expecting from it. Starts off a bit.. cack, but it seriously improves as you are going through it.

The Darkness was brilliant, but I thought people had stated the XBOX port was better? You've said you already have an XBOX, so I guess you'd be better off getting that version?

Ninja Gaiden is good fun, and looks quite pretty.

I think I'd recommend if you get a PS3 to connect it straight up to the net, download a whole load of demos from the UK store. Make a US account while they're downloading, and download even more demos from there, and you can play and choose yourself :)

Buy Heavenly Sword and import Ratchet next week. Or buy Heavenly Sword, try out the Ratchet demo and see what you think.

You can get good bundles though if you look around.

If your into fighters VF5 is amazing for 2 player :)

Yeah I can get 2 games (any), 2 BluRay disks (any) and 60gb console for £315 (with an employee discount)

Sounds like a good one.

Yeah, the Ratchet demo looks great, but, you could also get the Heavenly Sword demo and try that for yourself too. IMO it does look dead fancy, but... well I'd consider buying it 2nd hand, if the price was right ;)

As for VF5, I bought that a while ago, and never really got into it, much prefer the Tekken 5 bought from the PSN. Speaking of which, Tekken 6 must be coming out, one day? ;)

As I said above, I only disagree with this IF the potential buyer doesn't already own a decent gaming PC. If he has nothing the XBOX would give the better entertainment I'm sure. If he has a gaming PC already, I think the PS3 would offer more variety in games.

What with the price drop of late as well, it should also be taken into consideration if the potential buyer is a movie fan or not, as the bluray player really is impressive, and fantastic at that price, not to mention the impressive PS3 upscaler.
