PS3 or not?

I look at the "true" exclusives, and find that for the most part, the games I want to play on the XBOX360 come out on the PC, albeit in some cases, after a delay. Usually improved as well.

Games that I wanted to play on the PS3, like initially, Motorstorm, remain only on that format.

Cross format games don't matter, as I can play them anyway, such as Burnout Paradise and GTA IV. If they weren't coming out for PS3, I may have gone more towards the XBOX, but as it happens, the games that I want generally come out for the PC or PS3. The ones that are left purely on XBOX don't bother me so. Really, most of the "top" games that come out for the xbox, that aren't cross platform, come out on the PC too... with the exception of, at the moment I'm thinking of the PGR games... but, I'll just wait for GT anyway.

Off the top of my head:

Dead Rising, PGR3/4, Eternal Sonata, Blue Dragon, Chromehounds, Forza 2, DOA 4, Crackdown, Saints Row, Kameo, Perfect Dark Zero, Halo 3

and soon to be joined by:

Ace Combat, Lost Odyssey, Ninja Gaiden 2, Viva Pinata Party Animals, Banjo, Mass Effect, Too Human, Fable 2, Infinte Discovery, Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom.

Xbox 360 to PC timed exclusives: Gears of War, Condemned, Lost Planet, Viva Pinata.

You can always argue Mass Effect, Fable 2 and Halo 3 will appear on the PC but I couldn't honestly wait 2 years for them.

If anyone is interested, I got it earlier today. Got Resistance, Ninja Gaiden and Heavenly Sword.



Sitting next to the Elite on the KDL-46X3500 (new X-Series from Sony) Wii is in my room on a Samsung LCD. We have a stand on order coming soon (RHT-G800 from Sony)

Wow, I love that telly! ;)

I've got the 40w2000, so I'm not going to upgrade, but still, wow, great telly! (But, please, take the stickers off?) ;)

btw. doesn't your PS3 get warm in there?
We were having a discussion about PS3 fan noise the other day, and there's not a lot of ventilation around there. There's a big fan to the right of the PS3, which looks somewhat blocked there. Of course, I can't tell from your photo, and maybe there's nothing but free air at the back of your stand?

Just thought I'd mention it, in case you start noticing fan noise after a long sitting. I did in my TV stand, so took it out and stood it on its side. Much quieter now.

For some reason we got a thing for keeping them on! The new stand will have better space, it's only temp. I will probably move the Sky box down later to make a bit of room.

Telly is well nice, I haven't been taken aback by a TV for years (the last TV which gave me a wow factor was a Sony Art Couture CRT 32" we bought years and years ago!)
 
The browsing is cool, impressed by it, Without being drawn into any debate/argument I think the Wii's is better (probably because of the remote), but being able to browse at 1080p is quite cool. Think Sony could improve the browser.

Actually, when I bought my 40w2000, about 6 months ago, I left the stickers on for about a month ;) lol I have to say, I was quite taken aback with that too.

Still, being a newer one, I'd assume it can do 24hz? If so, be sure and set it up in the PS3 settings. Will do a nicer job with blurays, with less (or no?) judder on panning shots. Turn on FULLRGB too. (and while I'm at it, set the upscaler to Normal too) to get even better results on that fancy telly :)

Thanks for that! I did not even change any settings yet! I'll change them in a moment after I finish some work on the PC :P Yeah it supports 1080/24 and it's 120hz, it looks gorgeous when I put 1080p through Media Center on Xbox. I need to get some Bluray disks, might order some

Make sure you have 1:1 pixel mapping selected on the TV too then :)

When I first connected mine to the PS3 via HDMI, I loaded the Ninja Gaiden demo, as I wanted to see it in 1080p. Was a bit jaggy! Looked through my telly options, found 1:1 pixel mapping, turned it on. Fixed it :)

EDIT: I'm no expert when it comes to all these settings. If you're lucky, we'll have a visit from James.Miller or similar soon, and they can tell you what you need to know :)

Thanks mate, that is most helpful. I have not changed any settings at all on the TV and I think I really should! Time to dig out the manual!

Oh well, in that case, I recommend, indeed BEG, that for your options for the PS3 input (at least) you turn down/off the awful sharpening effect, and anything like that. In my 40w2000 menu, you have advanced options, and in there, things like advanced Contrast Enhancer, and Black Correctors, which I recommend are turned off. Personally, I like Colour Space set to wide, and live colour Medium, but that's more down to personal preference I feel.

But the "Enhancements" like the black corrector and advanced contrast enhancer, the MPEG noise reduction, and "Noise Reduction" I'll turn all off.

Be sure and turn on that 1:1 pixel mapping too! ;)

EDIT: and the artificial sharpness is one of the worst things of all, turn it down/off as far as it will go ;)

EDIT2: in all honesty, if I were you, I'd pop along to the Home Cinema and Hi-Fi forum, post that you have that telly, and request assistance with settings. The guys in there'll soon get your screen to it's optimal settings. Things like getting the brightness level right can make an amazing difference.

Okay, I must say on the TV I got, the PS3 edges the Xbox 360 for me in terms of graphics, Ninja Gaiden at 1080p looks unbelievable, need to try Heavenly Sword at some point. In terms of gameplay...can't decide! Just glad I got both. I'll remain on the wall still :)
