PS3 or Wii?

PS3 certainly could have the brighter future, i expect it to improve the quickest but it cant ever beat the 360 in a number of definitive areas already

I can't see it becoming a leader either, But it get's trodden on so often as a lesser console, it's silly. I believe the PS3 and 360 will have an even playnig field, And as said, The game's will always decide it in the long run.

And people who say the 360 has the "better" exclusives. Please don't tell me what games are better. ;) (Thats obviously not aimed at your Shicky:))

50% failure rates on the 360 worldwide... enough said.

Attention, we have a fanboy in the room.

personally out of the two id say the ps3, but if i had to choose out of all of them id choose the xbox360. Far better amounts of games on offer for my taste and i rather the controller, but that isn't really a make or break thing.

I thik the wii would be fun to play zelda on though.... cant think of any others though.

Would never own a wii personally as a solo console. Mainly bought it for the "Nintendo" titles but they seem to be on the slow side release wise. Currently have a xbox and wii, the xbox does get a hell of a lot more use but as i said i am a sucker for Nintendo franchises.

Thanks for all your input guys, i've taken a lot of it onboard, and as much as i want a wii (lol), as has been mentioned, it's primary function is multiplayer / party use, i normally have friends round for poker maybe once a fortnight or something. So i may discount the wii as i think i may get bored of single player use.

My G/f's son also has a 360 - which he plays on a lot - and has had it since near release a couple/ few years ago (can't remember when it was released now), and the multiplayer element (xbox live) is very tempting, however, i've seen a few 'three red light' stories which are putting me off the 360.

So in the light of that, that leaves the PS3 (for now - i may still consider the 360 yet). Some promising looking titles due out for the ps3 (GTA IV, GT5P, both of which i will buy, plus more) however the games are more expensive than on the other platforms but that's just a minor side (non) issue, plus the ps3 is blu ray ready too, xbox i'd have to buy a stand alone HD-dvd player wouldn't i? Though i can't help feeling that there are more better games for the 360, which is only because it's been out longer than the ps3.

I'm not a hardcore gamer, but i play games on my pc (usually buy most of the top titles - latest being the orange box though) I mainly play FPS games and i also like driving games (realistic or unrealsitic) last one i bought was TD:U - but i don't have a wheel - use control pad. Wether that info is relevent or not i've added it anyway.

Compared as a separate cpu and gpu (which imo is a flawed way of looking at the graphical power and functionality of the ps3) then yep 360 has the better gpu and ergo the better graphical prowess like Nokkon said. In practical, real terms it hasnt proven sufficiently to make much difference that i can see.

And we havent really seen the 2nd Tier Ps3 games yet. Though you could consider Uncharted: Drakes Fortune to be the first. Graphics quality on it are mightily impressive :D
Absolutely spot on.

If you buy games online there a lot cheaper than retail, but most of my games i get from the States for between £30-35 including delivery, as they normally get them upto a month before us. Cant trade them in but could always stick em on the bay or even in the MM on here. If you like driving games the Logitech G25 wheel seems a great bit of kit, look in the GT5P thread and Mr Latte done a fantastic job reviewing it, its also compatible with PC's, that is if you want to spend £150 approx for one. GTA4 on the 360 will have some exclusive DLC whith one out this year and the other in 2009 no details as yet or price but i would expect about £10-20 for each one ( about the same as the oblivion DLC).

There's been quite a few PS3's dying as of late too (search the forums).

The games are pretty much the same when ordered online so it's nothing to worry about. Games are also region free so you can import them too.
As for feeling the Xbox360 has more better games, you should feel like that, it's true, but the PS3 will come good soon I'm sure.

couple more quick q's

Does PS3 have an onlince community like xbox? How much if it does and what exactly is sixaxis - and does the dualshock 3 have it?

At present the PS3 community isnt as developed as the 360's, theres no gamertag or gamerscore and ingame messaging is only available in a few games (Timeshift and UT3). With no axis to the XMB (ps3 interface if you wish) in game if you have a message out side of the xmb you have to quit your game to read it. It does have video messaging, text messaging but only in the XMB. Not ideal i know but this year, something called Home arrives for the PS3. http://threespeech.com/blog/?p=322

Some things touted for home/already in place
Trophy Room, display gaming achievements as a 3D trophy which you can show to friends
Gamertags, much like the 360's but will have a different name
Able to meet with clan friends in a Clan house to arrange games and launch the game from there
Walk and talk and interact with the other people there invite into your home to show vids photos etc
Goto to a Cinema to watch Trailers for Games/films etc
Play games such as bowling, chess arcade games with people you meet in home
Plenty of other stuff i cant remember !
Just google PS3 home for more info, should be out late spring/ summer with an open beta in the first few months of this year last time i heard.
Most of this will also be able do be done out of home ie on the XMB so you dont have to be in home to send invites and ingame messages to friends.

The Sixaxis is the standard PS3 controller, much like the old PS2 controller but with motion control and no vibrate, the Dual shock 3 is an improved version of the sixaxis with vibrate, better analogue sticks and build quality.

It's good that you point that out, But just make sure to let him know it's nowhere near to the extent we've seen the 360's dying. :)

Since around the start of December I believe it's more and a lot less Xbox360's are failing. I don't think there's a lot in it if you were to buy one new.

It has an online community service called PSN which offers a download service (though the EU one is apalling which was being discussed in a thread last night, but you can sign up foreign ones). You can play online for free (something you can't on XBox Live) which is nice, though it lacks some of the features that makes Xbox Live so great (online messaging, account reputations, player muting, player information histories, using your own music ingame as soundtracks, achievements.
The PSN is a very good service for free though, so it is hard to complain and the only negative is seeing just how much more stuck Asia and North America get over us (something that isn't the case on Xbox Live as all stores are updated at the same time).
When you get down to equal elements however it's quite divided, where each system offers the same things, some of those are better on Xbox360 and some better on PS3.

The PS3 does not come with Dual Shock 3, instead you get a Six-Axis which, according to my Awards thread is widely being slated as the worst hardware/peripheral of the year... not good. It's an awful, awful, awful pad, probably my least favourite ever, it's so cheap and has what I'd call serious flaws (search the forums and you'll see my thoughts), however you can import a Dualshock 3 control pad from Asia for around £35-£40 each and those are apparently much better fixing one of the major flaws of the Six-Axis in regards to the analogue deadzone, so I'd really recommend you import 2 of those (if you're into multiplayer).

The PS3 offers a lot more than the Xbox360 so some will say it offers more bang for your buck, the Xbox360 offers less, but does what it does, in general, better with it's Xbox Live service, Games list, control pad (best ever) and features. The PS3 offers a brilliant media service with Blu-Ray movies, in-built wireless, a free online service (that's good) and potential for some very good games next year.
If you want a media device, then it HAS to be the Playstation 3, I feel it does all media elements better and Blu-Ray is excellent, I use mine for DVD's and Blu-Rays quite regularly and I can't really fault it.
If you want a gaming device it has to be the Xbox360 which has many exclusive AAA titles compared to the PS3's 1 AAA title (IMO of course).

Either way, whichever you will buy it will be a good console. But as of now and into next year, one is a better media device and one a better games device.

OP, just ask yourself one question. Do you normally like to play Nintendo games, i.e. Mario & Zelda etc? Because the first party games are the only decent ones to really come out on Nintendo systems and if they are not your cup of tea then you may find yourself a little limited gameplay wise!

I'd agree if you swapped the first 2 answers around, particularly because PC's are primarily not Games machines, but Consoles are. That and the fact PC gaming hasn't been as good as console gaming for around 2.5 years IMO.

Should it be "do you like Games that are not games but highly complicated pieces of software that need tweaking and patching to be playable and need a powerful computer or video games"

No because for the majority of games that is a false statement.

No games REQUIRE a fast computer to play them, yes to PLAY them as in not neccesarily with all the eye candy on. People always bring up that argument and again it's false.

Sure Crysis is a bit dodgy performance wise but oh well, that's one game and it is quite a leap in visuals. (second half of the game is crap mind, gameplay wise)
