PS3 should I/Shouldnt I?

I'm sorry to go off topic here, but why on earth would anyone consider even contemplating owning a HD-DVD player right now? Even if its as cheap as chips ?

So you have an existing small library.... You have a piece of kit that you need to have readily available and plugged in so you can watch your small library...

No doubt you have some AV kit to attach it too also..

Seems like a lot of hassle for a format that will produce no more..

Unless you are an electronics collector then why bother? whatever the price...

It's an upscaling DVD player too, so it's no trouble to have it set up. Why pay £20 for a Blu-Ray movie when I can get it for £6 on HD-DVD, exact same quality of picture and sound. At its price it's a bargain.

HD-DVD also has the strongest movie line-up with Bourne Trilogy which is a must and was one thing that annoyed me about Blu-Ray.

Why pay £20 for a Blu Ray movie, firstly it could be rented or easily sold on. Heck why buy a 1080p screen or even a 720p based one if your not interested in getting the best from it? Would you play a X360 or PS3 game set to SDTV resolution? Id think not and hell if someone wants to buy a PS3 and watch DVDs on that upscaled then fine, they DONT have to buy BD films just yet but i imagine they just might get a few (I am Legend AVP2 besides there is loads of good titles coming) I somehow think you will have a harder time convincing people to buy into HD DVD even if the films were £2.99.

You also completely miss judge how good and how popular GT5P is...
Its worth getting the system for alone, for driving fans surely but dont let over 1 million pre orders try to convince you otherwise...

Also when HOME arrives wait to see PS3 sales go crazy....

Wait - why are people still paying for a ****ing demo?

:/

Call it that sure but thats just your uninformed opinion.
I could compare it to many games where it contains more cars and content. Besides many full price games offer 5-12 hours before completion. This offers a lot more than that.

Maybe £18 is a lot of money to you though?

btw GT4 Prologue only sold over 400,000 in Europe and approx 1.3 million worldwide as i mentioned earlier GT5p has pre-orders exceeding 1 million already. If you dont like it fine but refering to it as some form of con or not worth its price i just cant agree with that view considering its content and price. Besides quality is always more important than quantity and its the best console racer ive played on all systems.

No, and I don't. I use HDTV's both upstairs and downstairs. I have Blu-Ray and HD-DVD.

I buy both, so what's the problem. If I can get HD-DVD's for £6 instead of £20 on Blu-Ray, then I'm going to, if something is HD-DVD only (such as Heroes/Bourne Trilogy/Matrix etc..) then I can get it, but I can get exclusive Blu-Rays too.

If that's to me, then I already have a PS3 and I already have GT5P. So I'm in a position to comment. It's NOT worth buying a PS3 for and it's NOT worth full retail, it's a glorified demo. A good one, but a demo none the less. It has a fraction of what GT5 will have for over half the price, which is the point I've made in the past.

Also when HOME arrives wait to see PS3 sales go crazy....
HOME, as I've said many times should have been out at launch of the console. It's bringing its online section up to the same level as Xbox360 has had for over 2 years.

You're commenting on PS3 and Blu-Ray issues as if I don't have them, I do. I took the option to get a HD-DVD player for cheaper movies that are equal to PS3. Why would I pay £20 for a Blu-Ray when I can pay 1/4 the price? So what if it's a dying format, it's the same film in the same standard for less, is that hard to understand?

Renting movies isn't something that's been done in this household, not by my parents, nor by myself. Several hundred DVD's, Over 30 TV shows on DVD and several Blu-Rays and HD-DVDs.

Call it that sure but thats just your uninformed opinion.

Call his opinion 'uninformed' all you want, mine isn't. I've owned it since it was out and have played it a lot. It's £25 on PSN, not £18, so it's £25 from Sony.
As for games featuring more cars, not many are coming to mind this generation. PGR3, PGR4, Forza2, Test Drive Unlimited are all serious driving games that all feature more cars. All of which can be bought for less than GT5P on launch (although they were full retail £40 when launched), but they all featured what I'd say was £40 worth of content too. I wouldn't say GT5P features £25 of content in comparison.
It IS an extended demo.

Home will probably be far far from Lives level, when it eventually gets released that is, its also a free service remember.

And theres far from a lack of decent exclusives now-a-days imo, yea it use to be bad, but there are a few AAA exclusives as mentioned above (not just Uncharted), though lets not forget how you perceive games is entirely opinion based.

Yeah, it will be. What I meant was, HOME is Sony's way of bringing the PS3 onto the same playing field as Microsoft in relation to online support as everyone knows the PS3 is behind and on a software POV, is its major criticism.

I do disagree about exclusives though. I have several with Motorstorm, Resistance, Formula 1, Ratchet and Clank, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and Warhawk. Of those, Uncharted is easily the best and is AAA standard, the others aren't though.

Resistance is a totally average SP experience in every way. Good online.
Formula 1 is enjoyable, but it was already a year out of date when it was released.
Heavenly Sword is very repetative, shallow and short.
Ratchet and Clank was disappointing, I had it imported and it was just too samey and quite boring.
Motorstorm is very repetative, but is fun in short blasts. Still stunning though.
Warhawk just isn't my cup of tea, in fact, I think it's utter rubbish and I've tried to like it.
Gran Turismo 5 has some stunning cars, but it's actually quite slow and has frame rate drops quite often (though not that hindering in fairness and apparently sorted for the EU release). It's going to be a great game in 2009, but GT5p is still an extended demo, though if you have a PS3 you should have it.

Uncharted is the only exclusive of those I've played and thought 'this is brilliant' and if I didn't own a PS3 would be the only one I'd want on the Xbox360. All the others are bettered on Xbox360 or by multi-format titles.

Let us not forget, the OP already has an Xbox360, so aside from Blu-Ray he does have to be paying for exclusives. We've seen a lot of people buying PS3s only to complain about exclusives recently to show it's not just me.

A fantastic console no doubt and if I only owned a PS3 I would be more than happy as there are some great games available for it however, other than Uncharted I would say they're multi-format.

Resistance is a very enjoyable game and a lot better than most generic xbox360 shooter/fps and also Good online with no slowdown and old school feel

Formula 1 is enjoyable, but it was already a year out of date when it was released, but there isn't anything like it on any other current console so worth a purchase

Heavenly Sword is very good, quiet indepth with the combo and blocking and told like an interactive story, its abit short but again worthy of a pickup as can be got for cheap now
.
Ratchet and Clank is excellent, looks lush like a cartoon game should do

Motorstorm is very good, again a fun game and nothing like it on the 360, one of my fav racing/dirt buggy/bikes you name it game.

Warhawk - again a excellent multiplayer based game, much like battlefield and supported well even now

Gran Turismo 5 - cannot comment but after playing forza 2 of which this can only be compared to and playing the demo that was available this is easily the best real car based game to get

Uncharted - again a fine example of how a game should be made and how a story should be told.

Not forgetting you can still get the majority of titles as multi-format for anything your missing as there really isn't a lot i'm looking forward to on the 360 this year except for a few exclusives like Gears of War 2, Fable 2 and Halo Wars. Then there is the games that seem to fair better on the PS3 such as Burnout Paradise and there is also the open format of the PS3 for games like Unreal Tournament for map importing.

Alsao i find the PSN games to be better value for money for the price you pay and not restricted by limitation on size

Then there is of course blu-ray movie playback - what more can you say

fixed it for you Nokkon

Well I have to say games wise I'm loving the PS3, I've been playing RFoM since I got my PS3 a few weeks back, I honestly think it's the best first person shooter I've played since Halo on the original xbox, the graphics aren't brilliant but the set pieces in the game are astounding, some of the later levels I spend half my time with my head in the air staring in wonder at the brilliantly crafted Chimeran architecture.

I love the fact that it's based in England, it's great hearing all the familiar city's and towns and actually fighting Chimera in locations that I've visited in real life which is quite a surreal experience, RFoM is also one of those rare titles that gets better each level you play through, and it does it consistently right until the end, I really feel this game is under appreciated, If your new to the PS3 then give RFoM a chance, the demo just doesn't do this game justice.

I'm getting seriously tempted to get a PS3 to compliment my Wii and 360, but I just can't stand the PS3 controllers. I don't like the fact that they are stupidly light, but my main problem wity them is they make my hands ache after about 5 mins play :(

Are there any decent 360ish aftermarket controllers for it?

This one apparantly,

http://uk.gear.ign.com/articles/852/852422p1.html

I was temped to get one myself but I've actually gotten used to my PS3 controller now, I've got the trigger mods on mine and for some strange reason I'm finding it easier in first person shooters than I was with the 360 controller, I just seem to have more precision with the analogue controls on the six-axis, and this is coming from someone that was in love with the xbox controller since the early jap xbox 1 controller.

Fair enough, just out of interest what are these AAA games your refering too?

Not trying to start an arguement but but just asking for AAA titles is always going to be subjective and tbh imo AAA games are games which are creative and are offering gamers something new, as well as being additive which tbh there have been very very few so far in this generation of consoles.

AAA games in my eyes are must have titles, and the list below quoted by another poster I would argue that only uncharted possibly falls into that list.

  • Warhawk,
  • Uncharted
  • RFoM
  • Rachet and Clank
  • F1 CE
  • Tekken
  • Hot Shots
  • MotorStorm
  • Time Crisis

Im not trying to start an argument, yes I own a 360 and I love it to bits, other then the reliability issues that have dogged it, and the noise issues, it really is the best console iv had since the Snes & Dreamcast.

Some of the games that I would class as AAA titles for the 360

  • GOW
  • FN3
  • COD4
  • PGR4
  • Mass Effect
  • Bioshock
  • GRAW 1 & 2

All the above are games I have enjoyed emensely, and in my eyes are must own, I was hoping the PS3 would have such impressive games by now, or at least some great games on the way. I really liked the look of 'Little Big Planet' but I havent heard any more on it, MGS4 initally interested me until the showed actual gameplay footage. Other the that I am not aware of any PS3 only titles on the horrizon that would sway me into buying one. I know its a great Bluray player, I also know its a pretty good media centre (but then so is the 360 bar the noise)

Like I said, im not trying to start a war here, im just not that clued up on the PS3 scene and was hoping I would get people saying, such and such is coming out next month, its a must have, a PS3 exclusive etc.

but surely it's subjective, for example out of that I list I believe that there are 5 must have titles, it's all down to the individual end of the day, also COD4 is available for the 360 also ;).

If you want a PS3 then GT5P is an excuse to buy it but not the reason.

I personally love the Gran Turismo series I can't count the amount of hours I've spent on 2,3 and especially 4, but I'm not going to buy Prologue.

I'm going to wait until the full game comes out for a number of reasons.

Firstly, the game mechanics will be similar if not identical in the full game and that's what makes the game interesting. To spend hours playing a cut down version and learning the mechanics will leave me less inspired to play the full version which I know I will really enjoy. (Unless they balls it up, which is very unlikely).

Secondly, £20 for a demo is a lot and a tiny bit cheeky but good business sense so I'm not moaning as it's a logical move.

As for AAA exclusives, I'd go for Resistance, Uncharted and maybe Rachet and Clank. TBH the only exclusive that I play on my Dad's XBOX is Forza 2 (Which is brilliant and I'm actually scared that GT5 may not be as good:eek:). I've got Bioshock on the PC and I'm waiting for Mass Effect to come out for it too.

As for Live being better than PS3's internet service I'm genuinely not sure (read: aware) of the major differences. I've only really just got into internet console gaming and I'm finding that COD4 on the PS3 is brilliant online and I really dont know what could be made better (maybe the friend invite system as it's a bit pointless as the servers always fill up before your friend can accept).

I have been saying the same thing for a while.

Playing it on superhuman really bumps the enemy AI up, and I thought the story was the perfect length :)

Never played the demo because I got it on launch, but I would recommend this to anyone whose looking to buy a decent shooter (who doesn't own Drake's ;))

Don't forget Singstar and the soon to be released Buzz, i know they are sorta the same as their ps2 counterparts if you already own them but both are vastlyt better than anything the xbox360 has offered or is likely to, excellent party games

had a 360 since near day of release was on my 3rd which died about a month ago

picked up a ps3 on thursday and its so nice to use really really impressed with it!!

got ps3 r&c and moterstorm extra controller for 299 which was a bargin for what i was looking at

Its a big debate, personally, I own an Xbox360 Elite, I had the choice to buy a PS3 or an Xbox360, and I chose the Xbox, I don't care about blu-ray, or how many sales the PS3 makes, what I care about, is the online games/live etc which the Xbox is streets ahead.

Out of those exclusive games on the PS3, i'd play none of them, I don't even like Gran Turismo, so thats out of the question lol!

The majority of the games are available on both consoles ( I only really play pro evo, Burnout:Paradise, Ace Combat 6) with little or no difference, and so in my opinion, it's not worth owning both consoles.

Im certainly not a fanboy of either, but I don't see any appeal of buying a PS3 from a 360.

It's your money though, and it's a totally subjective opinion, if you like the exclusive PS3 games, then go for it!

Thing is, people often boast about PS3 vs 360, to be honest, by time the PS3 is completely established, we all know there will probably be an XBOX 4 or something!
