PS3 should I/Shouldnt I?

my opinion is that its a worthwile investment

if you want one for the games - i say wait until the dualshock3 is standard
then you dont have all the hassle invlved in importing it

its going to pick up a lot this year imho

Well I went out this weekend and picked up a PS3 after much humming and hawing. Managed to swap games and pick up the 2 game +extra controller for 299 deal from the spicy food outlet. I too already own a 360 and a Wii but I was drawn to the PS3 for the blu ray and the prospect of GT5P (I also think its helluva cheeky to charge for what amounts to a demo but hey ho it does look amazing)

Having picked up Ratchet and Uncharted I can say they are both highly impressive titles and more than hold their own when compared with the best the 360 has to offer. I'd still agree that the PS3 lacks any truly killer exclusives but I can live with that for now since I still have the whole novelty factor going on and am enjoying messing about with remote play and using my pc as a media server etc. As far as plus' and minus' go here's my first impressions:

+ build quality/noise (the console itself feels and looks like a proper bit of kit)
+ built in wifi
+ sweet upscaling of dvds
+ blu rays look immense
+ PSN - I just like the fact its there and working with no compulsory fees

- those controllers...what were Sony thinking? they really do feel cheap and far far too lightweight
- patchy media playback
- no hdmi cable in the box...why why why do they do this they only 'cost' about 5 quid grrr

In summary then...I only really got one because I had the cash and I could but I am not in the least bit disappointed. If you consider that two top games have an rrp of £100 and throw in the extra controller at say £30 for arguments sake then you can have a PS3 (blu ray player with wifi) for the equivalent of £170. To me that seemed a good deal and made the time right to buy. Plus of course now I have all the 3 top consoles under my telly...which is nice :)

No, and I don't. I use HDTV's both upstairs and downstairs. I have Blu-Ray and HD-DVD.

I buy both, so what's the problem. If I can get HD-DVD's for £6 instead of £20 on Blu-Ray, then I'm going to, if something is HD-DVD only (such as Heroes/Bourne Trilogy/Matrix etc..) then I can get it, but I can get exclusive Blu-Rays too.

If that's to me, then I already have a PS3 and I already have GT5P. So I'm in a position to comment. It's NOT worth buying a PS3 for and it's NOT worth full retail, it's a glorified demo. A good one, but a demo none the less. It has a fraction of what GT5 will have for over half the price, which is the point I've made in the past.

HOME, as I've said many times should have been out at launch of the console. It's bringing its online section up to the same level as Xbox360 has had for over 2 years.

You're commenting on PS3 and Blu-Ray issues as if I don't have them, I do. I took the option to get a HD-DVD player for cheaper movies that are equal to PS3. Why would I pay £20 for a Blu-Ray when I can pay 1/4 the price? So what if it's a dying format, it's the same film in the same standard for less, is that hard to understand?

Renting movies isn't something that's been done in this household, not by my parents, nor by myself. Several hundred DVD's, Over 30 TV shows on DVD and several Blu-Rays and HD-DVDs.

Call his opinion 'uninformed' all you want, mine isn't. I've owned it since it was out and have played it a lot. It's £25 on PSN, not £18, so it's £25 from Sony.
As for games featuring more cars, not many are coming to mind this generation. PGR3, PGR4, Forza2, Test Drive Unlimited are all serious driving games that all feature more cars. All of which can be bought for less than GT5P on launch (although they were full retail £40 when launched), but they all featured what I'd say was £40 worth of content too. I wouldn't say GT5P features £25 of content in comparison.
It IS an extended demo.

You are entitled to your opinion im entitled to disagree with parts of it.
Im not looking at this as if you dont own them, i know what you own from previous posts. This isnt me ranting at you but why are you trying to push HD DVD onto others specifically in a thread were the OP is questioning getting a PS3? Then you price cut down blow out stock prices of HD-DVDs against Sonys RRP, yeah thats a great example. As for GT5P all i can say is look at the Pre orders and many racing fans in online forums are agreeing that its a great racing title. None of the games you mention can work with a G25, none of them offer 18 player races and none of them handle like GT5. So pay £18, pay £25 whatever the point of Prologue is you get to play it approx 1 year before its proper release. You dont have to buy it hell you dont even have to like it but its one major factor for many to PS3 success and a reason for owning one, as is some of the games already mentioned and many upcoming games like Little Big Planet, Ferrari Challenge, Metal Gear, Wipeout, Motorstorm 2, RFOM2, Killzone 2. Besides that some devs have now moved production to PS3 as the primary console so i guess that also means some future games the PS3 will not have a dodgy port which has happened in the past on some titles.

Just because you area movie collector and may want to get films on HD-DVD cheap and have bought a player for peanuts you think your getting great value. Perhaps YOU are but many arnt that interested in Hi Def films yet. One thing is certain and i would say to anyone look at your DVD collection how many of the films that are 1-2 years old do you still watch? If the answer is not many then i suggest getting a HD DVD player and discs even on the cheap isnt a wise decision. I also own both formats but even though i enjoy the HD quality on a setup worth approx 8k im a selective purchaser, i dont buy films because they are cheap i buy them because i will enjoy or the family will enjoy them. As such in a year ive only bought about 10 films.

The WHOLE point with the PS3 is its future proof if the OP or others cant see that great games and things are now comming together for the PS3 and anyone that argues against this would be stupid imo. With the prices of the consoles now the way they are they are all worth getting but PS3 is overall the best value machine considering its hardware, multimedia abilities and connectivity options and for £299 with a couple of games can anyone really complain. X360 still imo has the best range of games and will always have the largest selection but come the end of 2008 i think the PS3 will be in a much better position than it was and has ever been.

Its a great time for gamers......

Huh? Since when did KFC start selling consoles? ;)

And on the note of GT5P being a demo, since when did demo's have 6 tracks, 60 cars, full options, single player, multiplayer, splitscreen, tuning options and different race types?

Answer = They don't. It's not the full game but it sure as hell isn't just a demo, anyone claiming that is just being ridiculous.

The tunning options alone make it a seriously long term game, then you have online, the chance to drive that F1 car. People want it because its GT and its got the prettiest looking cars. Its a joke those that refer to it as a demo in the sense of a demo like something from PSN or Live, absolutely different, besides Warhawk has been massively popular and thats as good of an example as any.

Nokkon is well off on this one but thats his opinion yet i could say he gets suckered into buying DVDs, HD DVD boxsets of TV programmes hes already seen yet then groans about GT5P and its value, eh? Bottom line if you like it then buy it. I still think a large amount of people have been considering a PS3 for sometime but will buy a PS3 now because of this release.

fixed it for you Nokkon
Yeah, because what you posted is accurate..
What 'generic' Xbox360 games are you comparing the most generic FPS of the last 4 years to?
I said Motorstorm was good in short bursts, which it is. It's not like it has tonnes of longevity though.
Warhawk isn't like Battlefield, it's not as good.
I never said Ratchet and Clank LOOKED bad. I said it played repetatively.

The thing is, I like to talk about the play of the games, how long they'll last and how people will enjoy them. Not how they look or what games they're like, which are full of half-truths.

In fairness, I watch my TV boxsets when I'm working, so I often watch them many many times. There are some TV shows I've seen over 10 times, that's 23 episodes (per season, most I have multiple seasons) so it's actually a bargain. I don't have any HD-DVD TV shows.

Agree with all of those points.

However, I'd add in a few more of my own:

+ PS3 worked with my USB headset out of the box. The 360 doesn't.
+ PS3 has a web browser

- PS3 X-media bar is too clunky compared to the 360 tabs
- Not sure if it's just me, but the PS3 voice chat facility is woefully lacking compared to the 360. A friend and I couldn't get the in-game Motorstorm chat to work, so we tried to use the PS3 chat from the X-media bar and it automatically disconnects you from the chat when you load a game.

I also have to make the point that the PS3 pads really are the most horrid little plastic things I've ever had to play a game with. The quality of them feels like they should have dropped out of a cracker at Xmas :P I find using the triggers and shoulder buttons incredibly uncomfortable for any length of time; the official 360 pads are leagues ahead.

I was past halfway through anyway, lost my save when my console broke and I forgot to back it up :p.
Argh! Seriously, you should go back and play it. Some of the later levels are superb, the graphics really seem to pick it up a notch as does the level design. Really reminded me of Halo 1 in places and I was sorry to finish it. You can always get a save game from someone or off the net and carry on where you left off :)

I see a lot of complaints on this thread regarding the pads. I don't have any experience with other controllers, so I have no basis for comparison. But my first reaction was yes, they are light, but:

+ The buttons and sticks have a nice solid feel to them
+ They are very accurate. There isn't any noticable latency through the wireless, even at longer distances - I've been able to use them with no problems at 20-25 feet.
+ I like that the batteries are replaceable, and Sony even provides instructions on how to do so.
+ I also like that they can be charged on any USB port, so while the PS3 is powered down you can charge 'em from your PC or something.

I give them a thumbs-up.

Im actually really tempted myself to pickup a ps3. The only thing really stopping me is the controller, I personally cannot get on with it due to the position of the analogue sticks. For some reason after a few hours I get serious cramps in my hands.

I'm the same, it does get better the more you use it though. But it's still a horrible controller :p ;)

Im pondering getting a PS3, just for GT5 tbh, so i may aswell ask here.....

Graphically speaking, how much better is GT5P than say Forza or PGR4?
